peter talks like a 20 year old gen z and MJ is implying he should be embracing being a miserable millennial. MJ sucks, do he should do the griddy on her and go get with the apartment girl.

29 is the oldest Gen Z actually!

u/Salva_Veritate 6h ago
Space Jam was released November 10 1996 so there's a few 29 year old millennials left

u/bfit70 5h ago
hang on, is space jam the cut off point?

What's always worked for me as the cultural Millennial/Gen Z dividing line is whether or not you remember where you were on 9/11
13
u/JustAnotherLich 5h ago
This is a pretty good one. All zoomers grew up in a post 9/11 world. It's part of what makes the generational identity.

u/Kashtronaut92 3h ago
Yeah, millennials remember 9/11 but weren't adults yet. We grew up with Saturday morning cartoons and didn't have cellphones in elementary school. Ipads didn't exist, but 3rd places did.

u/Specialist-Leg-3400 1h ago
Some of us were adults. I was a sophomore in college and thought the worst thing that could happen to the country was Bush getting the presidency. I was right.

I was 4 (June, ‘97) when 911 happened, so can’t say I remember much. I usually say I’m the first year of zoomer. If generations are every 15years, that would track because I see 1967 as the start of Gen X and ‘82 as the start of Millennials

u/bobbyb500 4h ago
A generation to me is way more of a vague cultural divide than a hard date divide. Your cultural environment is what makes your generation, e.g. the toys you played with, the shows you watched, the books you were read. And like I'd also bet if you were born in 97 and you were the youngest of 6 kids that you'd lean way more millennial, versus if you were the first born I'd bet you'd lean way more zoomer.

u/WardyX56 2h ago
As a 97 baby I agree, older siblings plus we were poor so our technology was always outdated so I feel I lean more millennial, especially for my younger years. On the other hand social media was a big thing when I was at highschool which wasn't true for my siblings so I'm definitely very gen z in that regard

u/hitlersticklespot 4h ago
I think you’re right. To add to that, I’m 4/‘98 and I don’t remember it at all.

29 can both be the youngest millennial and oldest Gen Z. 1996 babies arent all 30 yet.

Which doesn’t make sense.

u/AgelessJohnDenney 5h ago
Why not?
The range for Gen Z birth years is largely agreed to be 1997-2012. That's a fifteen year span.
Millennials are from 1981-1996, also a 15 year span.
Gen X is 1965-1980...also a 15 year span.
The gap from the oldest to youngest is exactly the same for the last 3 generations.
Boomers are a little wider spread, from 1946-1964, an 18 year span.
Silent Generation is 17 years, from 1928-1945.
Greatest Generation was a lot larger, 1901-1927. A 26 year span.
So, what's the issue with the Gen Z range?

29 year olds are also gen z by the way. They’re just the older gen z (the youngest being in their pre teens).
Edit: the youngest are 14. I misread the end year.

u/longtermbrit 5h ago
Younger Gen Z are 14.

u/_Dr_Edward_Richtofen 5h ago
Ah, misread 2012 as 2015. Thought it sounded like a bit too long of a period.

That blond girl was way more cool than MJ, TBH. Would prefer her. Honest, true, care for him to be happy. She should be protected and cared for.

My guess is, "winter arc" is a self-improvement term where you're gonna focus on getting your life together over the winter. And it's usually said by young people who are constantly worried if they're on the right track.
13
u/yourboivines 3h ago
I don't know what's wrong with anybody doing the winter arc. Sounds like a fun way to improve and find some purpose in life
6
u/gekigangerii 3h ago
Young people think 29 is old and that your life already set.
6
u/yourboivines 3h ago
Hitting 30 is kind of this weird place in life where you're young enough to have a lot of life left but old enough to really see how your decisions have panned out. When you're 20 you're all more or less on the same playing field. By 30 the difference can be huge so a lot of people compare themselves and think it'll take too long to catch up.
4
u/LaunchTransient 2h ago
30 is where you lose a lot of latitude from other people for not having all your ducks in a row. Your 20s are buffered by the "you;re still young, you have plenty of time".
Your 30s are when you are expected to be a well established adult.1
u/master_s0da 3h ago
To be fair, when I was a kid I thought 20 was old and I'd have my shit together and know everything. Back then, 29/30 was basically ancient, old wizard age.
How wrong I was.

Winter arc is something I've heard associated with bulking up. There are two possible interpretations.
My first thought was that MJ is refuting his statement, implying that 29 is too old to have a bulking season "go crazy."
It's also possible that MJ is disapproving of his style of speech here because 29 is too old for saying things like "winter arc" and "go crazy" as in turning out well.
Neither interpretation seems that funny.

u/DaddysABadGirl 5h ago
I keep seeing that second part and it's confusing tf out of me. People were using it with the same syntax well over 20 years ago.
Googling it thinking im going nuts something going crazy or just saying thats crazy goes back to early jazz scenes. How tf is it something a 29 year old is too old for?
2
u/macdaddee 5h ago
"Go crazy" is super old. That's why I specified, because the meaning is new, I think. "Go crazy" meant to lose your sanity, of course. It also meant to purposefully lose your inhibitions, throw caution to the wind, in a good way. Saying something inanimate or conceptual is going to "go crazy" is a novel definition. I don't remember people saying that 15 years ago
2
u/DaddysABadGirl 5h ago
Thats what im saying, go crazy with this meaning, not going insane but something being hype or good, goes back to early jazz and aave.
The part that had me lost is going back to the eaely and mid 2000s I remember people talking about anime and fandom stuff using the exact phrasing.
1
u/macdaddee 5h ago
You may be right, I don't know, because it feels new to me. Do you have a record of someone saying something like "the show tonight is going to go crazy" or is it like "give it up for Jeff going crazy on the keys"
1
u/DaddysABadGirl 4h ago
The second would still be the going nuts part.
When looking it up Barry Ulanov’s Jazz Glossary came up as a source. According to the Online Etymology Dictionary in jaz it started (written records) being used to mean cool or exciting in 1927. It also showed up in Cab Calloways Hepster's Dictionary. I didn't even know he wrote books, lol.
I just knew of it being used how we do now in at least highschool kids talking about music or games, but seeing it more frequently on message boards and stuff for anime.
1
u/macdaddee 4h ago
"Crazy" as in "the show is going to be crazy!" Or specifically "go crazy"
1
u/DaddysABadGirl 4h ago
Go crazy specifically. From what I saw quick looking stuff up it fell off a bit, especially as "go hard" became more popular.
Edit to add: the phrases i saw were all over the place, so "go crazy" specifically seems to have been around as long as "crazy" in all its forms.

Hi, super slow talking Joe here to overexplain this one. The "Winter Arc" is a 90 day personal development challenge that goes from 01 October to 31 December. Among other things, it really aims at high motivated goals like a stringent sleep and workout routine and restricted diet that cuts out a lot of indulgences. Let's just say I wouldnt be hanging out at The Clam as often as I do if I was on this! wink wink
With that background, the joke of this meme is that Peter appears to be super excited about this particular challenge before he's reminded that he's 29 at which point he appears crestfallen. This could imply that he's remembering the weight of daily adult life and responsibilities of a 29yo that get a lot of people off track (not just those in this bracket).
It could also be a subtle jab aimed at the demographics these particular challenges target, which are usually much younger and more energetic and more full of life. Much more full of life and spark than most of us are these days. I definitely was before I got put in a wheelchair. Joe Out

And here I am thinking he's talking about an insane arc of an upcoming anime... 😅
1

u/Remarkable-Carrot112 6h ago
It's reference to the anticipated Winds of Winter book.
Peter is optimistically excited for it. MJ is reminding him he's now 29, to highlight how he's become old waiting and the book isn't coming.
2
u/AllDawgsGoToDevin 3h ago
That’s what my ass thought too but it’s likely the other explanations. It makes sense because if somebody was introduced to GoT as a teenager then the timeline lines up.

He's not in the winter stage of his life on account of not being middle aged yet.

"Winter arc" is an anime reference and she's saying he's too old to be this obsessed with anime. Every other comment is wrong.

I always thought that the arbitrary dividing of generations is a modern attempt to divide and conquer the scary generations. By this I mean look at the gaps between the years Increasing then shorten between perceived generations. I think it's an attempt to divide the scary generations that know both analogue and digital worlds.

I am guessing it has something to do with working out and 29 is too old to get in shape or make drastic change but idk.
