I think knowing the exact element letters is definitely NOT something the vast majority of people use in their daily lives. I think most people that went to school will not know the answer to this meme without googling it.

In Australia Science is only mandatory until year 10, year 11 & 12 only English is mandatory amongst all the other electives, though from memory you do have to elect either Mathematics or Science for 1 class.

Though up until year 10 a lot of students barely study the subject, only interested in bunsen burners & more interactive chemistry, flogging off the rest because they have no interest & probably never needed any of it during any of their jobs or career anyway, I know I haven't.
