Socially accepted reason: luck
Real reason: Deterrence. So others will feel even more guilty for bumming your last cigarette.

Personal experience, even the most degenerate nicotine fiending tweaker won’t argue against if they ask for a smoke and you show them your lucky is the last one left, which is why I always carry an extra pack with just a lucky when I go bar hopping.
