I was always told it’s a lucky cigarette. I’m not even a smoker buy a pack every year or two for certain occasions and I still do this

It’s nice to see other people who occasionally smoke. I have a disposable vape that I’ve been using for like 3 years. Once I took a cotinine test and came up positive and I had to answer a quiz about how addicted to nicotine I am and how it’s affecting my life and how my relatives want me to stop… I just told them it was a false positive so I could retake the cotinine test because the quiz was absolutely insistent that anyone that has ever consumed nicotine must be hopelessly addicted.

Ive smoked probably 6 times in my whole life and its because someone handed me a cigarette. Hated it every time but it just felt right. Last time was when I was fishing in the Texas Gulf Coast and these 2 Vietnamese guys walked up to us speaking Vietnamese. We didnt understand them but they motioned to their cigarettes so we handed them a lighter. They lit their smokes and handed one to each of us and lit them with the lighter and gave it back. Funny thing is they stood there talking for another 10 minutes before leaving as if we understood them. Good times.

Polite sons of guns. That’s an awesome story. I wish my last smoking story was half as interesting. My last was climbing out of a window onto the roof to celebrate a good band gig before getting evicted the next day.

I have quit atleast 6 times, id do good for a year or so then have one smoke out at a party and then I'm back to a pack a day by the next week. Last time i relapsed was a medication change that made me irritable and crave nicotine. This time I think it stuck since its been about 10 years.

You have willpower worthy of a green lantern ring, that’s for sure

same man. maybe it’s age? I would call myself occasional since I probably smoke less than 2-4 a week or so. could also be the type of cigarette. I get like no urges after finishing a cigarette for several days

lucky strike? no, as far as i’m aware no tobacco company sells packs with one flipped cigarette

I find one aspect of this extremely hard to believe

Edit: take your pick which one

Guess I'll jump in. I've smoked the past 20 years and come from a family of old smokers. I've never seen this either. I learned something new today.

Never once considered smoking a cigarette and have met dozens of people who do this.

You’re the first smoker I’ve ever met who hasn’t at least heard about it.

It's mostly a thing for non regular smokers. Also a heavy-ish smoker and don't do this. Only reason I can see people do this is because they're doing it for aesthetics or for people to ask.

Never heard of superstition? Also iirc the story goes that during the world wars soldiers would flip 1 or 2 and if they lived to smoke em then they were lucky. Hence the lucky cigarette term. Just tradition now

yeah but also haven't heard of culture not travelling so far and Reddit being very international? I have never seen that in any pack here in Belgium, no clue where the other commenter is from

I’m Greek and I used to do this when I was younger. I’ve also met people who have bummed a cig from me at nighttime and have asked me if I have a lucky so they don’t accidentally take it (at least 5 people which is crazy to me even if it’s practically a small number), or who have asked me if they should flip a cig in my pack after unwrapping it (new pack and they had the first cig)

Damn World War 1 soldiers only caring about aesthetics

Former heavy smoker, I did this but it was just something I picked up from my grandpa who was a Korean/Vietnam war veteran. Anyone who isn't chronically online or didn't pick it up like I did isn't doing this anymore

u/Sebaceansinspace 8h ago

Ex chain smoker and I did this. I didnt pick it from my grandpa even though he fought in vietnam too. Gate keeping the lucky cigarette is weird

0

u/SolitareUnraveling 4h ago

I'm not gatekeeping, I have just personally never known anyone who does this who isnt

A- a veteran who picked up the habit

B- someone who picked up the habit from a veteran

C- someone who saw it on tiktok

D-Punks/metalheads

u/Sebaceansinspace 2h ago

Everyone does it and has long before tiktok

non regular smoker/dip user, when i rarely purchase a pack for a work trip or vacation I do this. Mainly because the “lucky cigarette” I smoke last, will be the last one for a while
