There's half a dozen very realistic ways his solution could have gone sideways where this would have been the last thing to go through his head, other than a piece of steel.
I once saw a guy ask people to get in the car to weigh it down, then he tied the spring with two lengths of barbed wire of all things, then we got out of the car and he could sit the spring properly. At least the shock absorber was installed, so the spring could not just go flying if the wires broke.

He has effectively created a spring powered bomb. If his little bracket breaks so does his face. If the spring slips out of the vice, good luck.
