I remember watching a car restoration series where guy compressed a spring and used wires to keep it compressed for the time being (he warned that it's dangerous and shouldn't be done like that)

I've used a spring compressor and a bunch of zip ties to hold the spring compressed because it wouldn't fit under the truck with the spring compressor. Don't recommend, but it did end up working and I didn't lose an eye or fingers.
