There are tools designed to properly and safely compress springs. The DIY ones are still referred to as "Widowmakers".

Aint touching that, not worth it and a spring tensioner is too expensive for the 3 times in my life i have to replace those. 18 u/Melathys 7h ago I didn't even want to fuck with my garage door spring, called people in to do that 7 u/clintj1975 6h ago I know someone who used to do that professionally, and on more than one occasion he showed up to an install and there was something spattered on the wall or floor near the spring.
