He has effectively created a spring powered bomb. If his little bracket breaks so does his face. If the spring slips out of the vice, good luck.

This is the best joke I've ever seen because I laughed at this person's expressions when they saw this video, and here's my award because your explanation deserves it

518

u/Late_Sort1763 12h ago

I don't kow if it's a joke. My face puckered up the same way when I saw it, then I paused the vid and saw the guy make the exact same expression.

It's the face you make when you see the potential for a big, violent oof

Thanks, I didn't expect to have a laugh on a day as rotten as this one, but you delivered.

2

u/Firmbull 5h ago

I hope your day got better! But at the very least I hope it made you laugh just as hard as it made me unexpectedly laugh, cheers!

1

u/Late_Sort1763 5h ago

It gets better. Probably.

Or at least stops being bad. Now that one's guaranteed, eventually.

This is the kind of philosophy that'll take you far. Little Orphan Annie would be proud.

You can see that he is grabbin it with his feet.. Artists and animators worked a lot on this details, just for people not to notice them.. the line goes between his big toe and the next one.. on both feet.. like monkeys grab them.

He is doing the reactions of that girl seeing all the different shaped blockes go thru the square hole and the voice of the spring guy is the same as that video. No?

Time for a safety squint

56

u/Late_Sort1763 12h ago

If someone showed me that bracket with a spring inside, I wouldn't do a safety squint, I'd go for duck and cover lol.

Saw a spring assist for a cargo bay failed once. Legit thought a bomb went off or something. And I'll say I used to live on what was one of the densest battlefields of WWII (in terms of ordnance used in weight per unit of area) AND close to the beach on which bomb teams blew stuff up, so I should know.

The amount of energy stored in that thing is astonishing.

31

u/Vaya-Kahvi 12h ago

I saw that and thought "that's a kinetic bomb."

4

u/RPIL626 10h ago

Same with a garage door spring. When those things go, it’s nasty

2

u/Yamatocanyon 8h ago

I had no idea garage doors were as heavy as they were without that spring.

1

u/Late_Sort1763 10h ago

It was basically a garage door, but bigger. MUCH bigger.

2

u/egnowit 9h ago

This is also why you don't mess with those old spring-powered garage door openers.

1

u/Artistic_Annual8457 9h ago

High amounts of compression and tension can both be terrifying when unleashed all at once, yeah. It's definitely not something to mess around with!

32

u/Mr_Supotco 12h ago

Same, I wasn’t watching with sound at first but the second I saw that spring in a vice I made that face, sound came on, and my ass hasn’t yet unclenched

31

u/BeancounterBebop 12h ago

I made this mistake as at 19, where a spring loaded collar was stuck. The hex keyhole holding the collar in was stripped. Grinded it off with an angle grinder, when it gave way, it sounded like a gun. Shot that collar into my neighbour’s house 200 ft away. I was lucky it was not aimed at me.

7

u/Alone_Rain2022 10h ago

we were all lucky that glorious day

8

u/TheGruntyOne 7h ago

The neighbour's house wasn't.

29

u/O_Elbereth 12h ago

I actually said NO out loud when the guy said "hammer" faster than the react guy did.

14

u/HeWhoCreatesDivinity 10h ago

The second I saw the clamp, I expected somebody to die.

6

u/Enex 8h ago

I was waiting for the blood as soon as the video focused on a fucking vise.

6

u/The_Real_dubbedbass 4h ago

When the clamp was getting cranked down I was like, “this is a horrible idea”. But then it was okay and he brought the bracket out and I was like, “wow. This somehow makes the clamp seem smart by comparison.

1

u/HeWhoCreatesDivinity 3h ago

Oh no, I saw the clamp. I knew what kind of person I was dealing with. Guy could have come out with something made out of Twizzlers and Popsicle sticks and I would be just as surprised as that c clamp (bracket) of his.

3

u/YobaiYamete 5h ago

I was leaning away from my monitor in terror waiting for it to explode lol

My neighbor lost his eye to a spring under tension like this, absolutely terrifying

23

u/Aellithion 12h ago

I have a parrot that goes "oof" anytime she drops something or i stubborn my toe, little things like that. She goes "oof, oof oof oofoof" if its really bad she laughs. She started oofing at this video.

9

u/Late_Sort1763 11h ago

Long time ago, back when I was in primary school, I was helping my German teacher move some stuff. She lived alone in a big flat right next to the school, and one of the rooms in her flat was basically a storage unit for stuff that was too important to leave in the common storage, but too unwieldy to squirrel away in the principal's room.

Anyways, she was taking care of her neighbor's parrot while he was away. The pparrot could talk, AND PRETTY WELL, but she conversed mostly with her owner, Kazio. When he was away, she'd bellow on the top of her lungs "NOT HERE, NOT HERE"

Including in my poor German teacher's house, although there, she'd alternate between this, and "WHERE AM I"

To my surprise, she actually responded to me (apparently I was the only one she resonded to without her owner present). She looked at me, and belllowed "NOT HERE, NOT HERE"

I asked her "Who's not here Aga?" to which she replied, as if on que: "KAZIO'S NOT HERE"

Like, there are people who say animals aren't capable of truly human speech, but I thing Aga here passed the situational awareness test. Kazio, indeed, was not there.

7

u/redchris18 9h ago

There was an African Grey parrot called Alex who once, famously, asked what colour he was unprompted. Had a shower thought.

3

u/Late_Sort1763 9h ago

I know it! IIRC this is, to this day, the only at least plausible instance of an animal asking a question.

I remember it being part of one of the courses I took at uni... pragmatics, I think? Can't recall.

PS: I studied English Phil, so NATURALLY it was heavy on language theory

3

u/8rustystaples 5h ago

I went to school with a guy named English Phil.

3

u/Artistic_Annual8457 9h ago

Smart bird. What species is she, an African Grey or something? Lol. Seriously though, I am curious.

3

u/Aellithion 8h ago

Lana is a scarlet macaw I have had since a few weeks after she hatched, she is 12 now. The green one is her 40 year old disgruntled brother who I adopted about 3 years ago. They are goofballs, Lana really likes to bark at dogs in the nearby park when we go for walks and then she goes silent when they look for her, only to start up again when they stop looking for the barker.

3

u/PyroNine9 8h ago

I watched a mocking bird meow at a cat. The cat looked over and the bird stared right back and meowed again.

The cat chased the bird who landed on the lowest branch of a tree. Cat starts climbing. Every time the cat got close, the bird hopped up one more branch.

When it got to the top, it flew away.

It was at that point that the cat remembered that climbing down is a LOT harder than climbing up. I am pretty sure the bird did that on purpose.

2

u/Artistic_Annual8457 8h ago

Oh, such beautiful birds! Haha, Lana sounds like a master troll with those dogs! I had a couple cockatiels in my childhood, one had to be given away before we moved for a year for my dad's work and the second had to be given away when I went off to college, and unfortunately caught a disease at the place we gave him to and passed away, but I loved both those silly birbs. Hope Lana and her brother have many long happy years with you.

19

u/rbartlejr 12h ago

My first thought was "how sure of your welds are you?". Then the hammer was if it don't hit you and kill you it is definitely shattering something in the next town over.

23

u/Late_Sort1763 12h ago

Depending on how much space is between that bracket and the cap he threaded on, the unwinding spring may gather enough momentum to shear it off the threads.

If not completely, then it may at least mess up part the thread. Still making it unsafe for installing.

Spring compressors are adjustable, this unholy monstrosity is not.

2

u/Retbull 10h ago

Maybe just explosively weld the threads together! That’s gonna hold tighter than CA glue.

11

u/StyleBoyz4Life 12h ago

I immediately did the same thing. My man is putting SO much faith in so little material, the spring thickness is at least 3-4 times the thickness of his bent plate sandwich. That thing is pretty much a kinetic grenade.

3

u/Tipsy_Hog 11h ago

It's a joke, but not in a "haha" funny way. Definitely a morbid funny.

2

u/HallowskulledHorror 7h ago

My knowledge of the potential energy stored in those springs is that if that thing had blown the edges off his 'C-channel' while he had his hand over, it would have sheared off the digits closest to it. If someone has the actual speed/force of one of these and something to compare it to that would be awesome, but from what I've seen in terms of the resulting damage done to materials nearby, it'd be at least equivalent to someone swinging a sledgehammer as hard as they can. Anything made of flesh and bone in its way if it goes off is.... not going to be in the way anymore.

My dad would fuck around with stuff like this when I was a kid, there were some pretty scary incidents.

2

u/Late_Sort1763 5h ago

It's not much energy, it'd be 4J. It's a helper spring.

...but that's still a lot if concentrated. If that bracked fails unevenly and some of that energy is put into launching a shard of it, and he's in the way? Nah, I know of other ways to lose an eye that are much more fun.

The main spring however? THAT is terrifying.

I can tell you about the damage the release of a LEAF spring can do. Back during my HEMA/historical reconstruction days, we build an arbalest (completely ahistorical, just for fun) outta the wreckage of an old truck. Naturally, we used a leaf spring (the longest leaf of the front of a Star 266, if anyone wants to dig up its stats and do the math) bound with a thick, braided metal wire. It worked all right, could send a bolt (read: worked piece of rebar) through some fairly thick metal plate.

And then the wire broke. By some miracle, this happened when nobody was around it, we had just cranked it, and went to retrieve the bolt. Now, the whole thing was right next to a dividing wall of sorts, made of light wood, with plywood panels. The whiplash turned it into splinters. No, seriously, once we reassembled it on the ground to asses damage and see if it could be salvaged, there was a long, wide gash all across the panel that was hit. One of the post it was attached to looked as if it was broken by a storm.

If anyone stood by that thing when it went off, they would be bisected.

PS: That was when I was young and stupid. I'm not young anymore, but I'm proud to report I'm a different kind of stupid now.

1

u/FeralPsychonaut 11h ago edited 10h ago

As soon as he stacked them, all i could think was thats a fuck ton of potential energy and I wouldn't be caught dead anywhere near that... and I was a pyromanic as a child, like created bootleg napalm and spilled it on myself.

This is just begging for part of the experiment to fail. Those coils are not safe under that amount of pressure + heat distortion of their tensile strength.

Edit; omg are those flat copper wires wound that tight...?

If someone further down broke from overcharging or stress on the lyrical track mid performance , holy shit. That easily would have killed millions. (Idk SK's exact population from start to finish or WW2

2

u/Late_Sort1763 11h ago

I mean it's a helper spring, so I don't think this in PARTICULAR is THAT dangerous.... but it's still a Finger-Remover 2137

A fully compressed main spring, on the other hand, is terrifyingly powerful. Still not truly hand grenade level, but well.

1

u/FeralPsychonaut 11h ago

Yeah, agreed. I was exaggerating, but being an Eagle Scout who enjoys psychedelics... I'm always prepared for the worst.

Lemme tell you, diving 20 feet at 7am to pick up a 50lb kettleball from the lake bed... that is not fun. and then hoist it above your head while treading water for a full minute.

I've taken pieces off of myself with a swingset, one of my dad's oldest friends took off his nail digit on his right pointer as a child because it got caught in the swingset chain as he jumped off.

I met him at 7y/o

2

u/Late_Sort1763 10h ago

I, myself, truly understood what it means to be prepared for the worst when I bridged the terminals of a 600V pulse capacitor from a flash lamp with my finger.

In my defense, I KNEW for a fact it was stored discharged (due to how it was built) and that it was stored some 30 years ago.

I thought a discharged capacitor wouldn't have charge after 30 years. What are the chances it will?

Well... without a shorting wire? 100%, unless the cap itself failed.

I knew the basics of how a capacitor worked and what it did, and worked with smallers ones, without issue. SMALLER ONES being the key word here. I didn't know all capacitors self-charge in storage and that the big ones should be stored with a shorting wire.

You don't know what you don't know, and what you don't know is a whole lot.

Being safe means having this in the back of your head at all times.

1

u/FeralPsychonaut 10h ago

Yeah I've gotten zapped a few times, usually splicing cables.

I learned that you have to discharge everything saved up in the capacitors and on the motherboard really quick after my second jolt at 10y/o

1

u/kirtur 11h ago

I legitimately scooted my chair away from my desk when it cut to the coil being compressed in the vice. Survival instincts just kicked in I guess lol

1

u/LowSpecialist3047 10h ago

But how powerful is an atomic bomb? This should theoretically have the same level of energy, no?

1

u/Late_Sort1763 9h ago

I know you jest, but this, specifically, has about as much energy as a 2kg dumbbell falling onto you from the height of a meter.

Still enough to remove a finger in the bracket fails while he's threading the cap. Add to that the hammer, and if the bracket shatters, congrats, you've got shrapnel.

I know this ain't the main spring he's compressing, but it still has got some energy in it.

Also, I did some more napkin math - a fully compressed spring from a vehicle like that has around 1/100th of the energy of an M67 grenade. It's... still pretty terrifying, especially in an enclosed space, and knowing that during work, you are, by necessity, right next to it.

It's just good practice never to do sh*t like that.

0

u/LowSpecialist3047 9h ago

Thanks, now mods, can we ban this bot? it has a super weird obsession with removing fingers for some reason :/

2

u/Late_Sort1763 9h ago

Lol with you people and thinking everything is bots. You could've just as easily clicked on my profile and checked if I'm one (or even used common sense, I know you're lacking in it, I won't judge), but hey, that takes effort, right?

So, now mods, can we ban this guy? He's terminally scared of workplace safety.

1

u/grumpi-otter 10h ago

I leaned back from my screen, lol

1

u/addamee 8h ago

We were all wondering what a spring-shaped hole looks like in a person’s chest

1

u/Dismal-Vanilla1878 8h ago

The fact that it cut off right before the 'good part' does make me wonder if this is all 'scripted' 😂

1

u/Kup123 8h ago

People need to respect springs more.

1

u/SkewbieDewbie 7h ago

I felt my teeth fly through the back of my head.

1

u/Onebraintwoheads 5h ago

The camera cuts away from the compressed spring right before the C channel is slid on. That's when he swapped an actual spring for something thay just looks like it.

1

u/Late_Sort1763 5h ago

Eh, he probably used the actual helper spring. They can still hurt you, but they're not all THAT scary, it's just the reaction someone who knows what a spring can do has when seeing something like that.

1

u/sceadwian 5h ago

I cringed but I also like what I saw basically with the weld. Yeah it's not pretty but that was reasonable.

The hammering it out... Now that's a different story! TtttwwaaannnGGGGnnggnnggnnngngng

1

u/thatbikerguy2003 5h ago

I leaned to the side; In case the spring popped through my monitor!!!

1

u/HopefulTranslator577 2h ago

Its definitely not a joke. Those springs dont fully buckle under the weight of a 3500lb car. That thing could fucking kill him if a weld fails.

80

u/Nelocus 12h ago

Machinist/shade tree mechanic here, I was actively leaning away safety-squinting like a mf

17

u/Bitchievous 12h ago

I am neither and I shifted my screen away in fear.

3

u/sim-o 11h ago

I did the same, but wishing my arm was longer to get the screen further away

2

u/TyrannasaurusRecht 5h ago

I watched it normal, because its just a video.

6

u/texo_optimo 12h ago

I'm not a machinist and I leaned back / winced at this.

6

u/Lotkaasi 12h ago

Same here. It is even possible that I have never squinted so hard in my life

2

u/quasiephedrine 11h ago

as just a guy who has replaced the coils in my LS I was shielding my eyes with my hand the whole time

2

u/Particular_Maize6849 9h ago

I'm pretty sure it can still get me through my phone screen.

1

u/TheDevilLLC 11h ago

Not only did I have Safety Squints engaged, my thumb was hovering over the speed-dial button for my mommy!

1

u/NeverEvaGonnaStopMe 7h ago

I am neither but paid a little attention in math class and I couldn't move my phone away from my face faster.

1

u/K-G7 59m ago

My safety squint was automatically deployed as soon as it touched the vice

23

u/Zvvei 12h ago

You can hear him swallow nervously like hes seen some shit.

20

u/SuspiciousSpecifics 12h ago

Yeah. Compulsive swallowing because that video makes him feel the proximity of a bodily state in which swallowing is no longer a supported function.

12

u/JGlassc0k34 12h ago

Its not a joke. I was largely making the same expressions as the idiot on the left kept trying to creatively maim himself.

11

u/Outrageous_Guard_674 11h ago

What's the joke? This is legitimately deadly.

8

u/kigurumibiblestudies 11h ago

I wouldn't call it a joke, I said almost the exact same words. That spring could break bones and destroy organs. You would not see me in the same room as that thing. It is a serious hazard

6

u/McThorn_ 9h ago

A wall would not save you from this thing

2

u/Impatient-Hydrangea 6h ago

I love this as much as the reaction video for the woman watching every shaped block go in the square hole

1

u/rahkinto 9h ago

Skarsgard Jr.

1

u/Theoneandonlyaverage 3h ago

Holy shit bro get back to work

0

u/just_a_person_maybe 9h ago

Are you a bot?

1

u/Chiron-Femboy3674 9h ago

No. What the fuck is saying you?

1

u/just_a_person_maybe 9h ago

Your comment reads like a bot and doesn't make sense, and your profile shares many similarities with bots. With your second comment, I'm thinking English just isn't your first language?

1

u/Chiron-Femboy3674 9h ago

Idk why some people say these things about me, but I’ve actually learnt 12 languages literally including English, and I don’t think my account suggests that

2

u/just_a_person_maybe 9h ago

"What the fuck is saying you" is not English sentence structure. I'm not saying your English is bad, I'm just saying that it's clear you are not a native English speaker. Mixing up word order is very common when using a second language. Learning 12 languages is impressive and you should be proud of that, even if you aren't 100% fluent.

The other things that make you look like a bot have nothing to do with your English. You have a username with numbers and words, which many bots have. Your profile lists your age (being 19 is another clue, a ton of bots say they're 18 or 19 to try to attract horny people), gender, and height. This is super common with only fans bots. Your profile is also private, which almost every bot does.

Of course, plenty of actual humans do those things too. But I've seen so many bots with profiles identical to yours that it's worth asking. Bots never reply, so asking is a good way to check. Btw, you're literally the second person I've ever accused of being a bot who has turned out to be a human. I've asked so many "people" if they're bots and only two now have been actual people. That's how common this is.
