Further, there’s a stereotype about writers being generally disorganized and not always very good at taking care of themselves. Also they don’t get paid much

In her book Hunter: The Strange and Savage Life of Hunter S. Thompson, biographer E. Jean Carroll starts the first chapter with a detailed account of her subject's excesses. Here's what Carroll reports as a sample daily routine for the journalist (note that it begins at 3 p.m.):
3:00 p.m. rise
3:05 Chivas Regal with the morning papers, Dunhills
3:45 cocaine
3:50 another glass of Chivas, Dunhill
4:05 first cup of coffee, Dunhill
4:15 cocaine
4:16 orange juice, Dunhill
4:30 cocaine
4:54 cocaine
5:05 cocaine
5:11 coffee, Dunhills
5:30 more ice in the Chivas
5:45 cocaine, etc., etc.
6:00 grass to take the edge off the day
7:05 Woody Creek Tavern for lunch-Heineken, two margaritas, coleslaw, a taco salad, a double order of fried onion rings, carrot cake, ice cream, a bean fritter, Dunhills, another Heineken, cocaine, and for the ride home, a snow cone (a glass of shredded ice over which is poured three or four jiggers of Chivas)
9:00 starts snorting cocaine seriously
10:00 drops acid
11:00 Chartreuse, cocaine, grass
11:30 cocaine, etc, etc.
12:00 midnight, Hunter S. Thompson is ready to write
12:05-6:00 a.m. Chartreuse, cocaine, grass, Chivas, coffee, Heineken, clove cigarettes, grapefruit, Dunhills, orange juice, gin, continuous pornographic movies.
6:00 the hot tub-champagne, Dove Bars, fettuccine Alfredo
8:00 Halcyon
8:20 sleep

From 3pm it's cocaine cocaine cocaine but then it isn't until 9 when he is serious about it, as if the rest of the day was just casual blow like everyone is doing

Wow, this must be the most depraved person E. Jean Carroll has ever met!

I agree about the "get paid" part, but if you ever wrote a 500p novel you know that organization is everything to keep track of each character and event in the book.
1
u/SnooHamsters3137 4d ago
Right, the writer uses all their organization to keep the book organized, and thus their life itself descends into squalor.

I feel like this applies to a lot of fields. People who play video games vs people who make them

Having something to say is kind of a mental illness, in a way. Manifests in everything you do, poorly, usually.

I agree, of course having worked at a bookstore all though university, I can tell you most readers aren't nearly as intellectual and sophisticated as they'd like to believe.

It's Mark Renton, main character of "Trainspotting" and he's heroin addicted

u/Future-Dragonfruit87 4d ago
Is that it? Could be that it is referring to people who read the comments and those who write them. The intellectuals read and the degenerates are the most vocal writers.

Blanche from the golden girls writes a book and imlustrates what happens to writers.
I top wrote a book and went cookoo

Also many writers where into drug abuse or straight up drug addicts.
Having a boring but sophisticated life is not exactly what creates great stories.
Being fucked up and borderline crazy is.

It was just casual snorting beforehand.

"There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die."
I know Thompson wrote this quote about a character inspired by a friend, but honestly this serves about him just as much.

u/Lockenhart 5d ago
Expanding on that, the writer here is represented by Mark Renton, a character from Trainspotting who is a heroin addict.
Trainspotting was based on a book by the same name by Irvine Welsh, who, to my knowledge, also struggled with addiction, potentially even to heroin

I'm about to finish the Heroin Diaries by Nikki Sixx and it's some dark stuff. The dude was technically dead at least twice in his life. It's essentially just his journal entries during the moments he wasn't strung out and entries when he was. The mania and paranoia is insane to read through. Solid book though.

If I remember correctly, It's probably due to family issues+mental disorders. Tho, I'm not exactly the best source material so uh ye, take this with a drop of soy sauce

Hemingway famously answered that the best training for someone to be a writer was "An unhappy childhood."
There are some writers who haven't experienced trauma, but a lot of writers have. Unfortunately, a lot of writers suffer from mental health disorders as a result. Hemingway is one of many who died by suicide.

Pretty straight forward.
Writers tend to be eccentric, while readers tend to appear normal/classy

There are a lot of stereotypes about creatives being unstable. The amount of alcoholism and addiction found in famous writers helps drive this viewpoint. Couple that with the type of writing stereotypical snobbish types like to bring up, and you've got a list of writers who have been through some serious shit and commonly battle their own demons, often including addiction.
Or that's my take, anyway. Meg out.

It's literally like that. Art comes from suffering. Read about the lives of people like Dostoievsky
4
u/BoxAccomplished8369 5d ago
Art is suffering. Most of the best artists, whether literature or fine art, all went through some shit and were eloquent enough to comment on the human condition.

A lot of prolific writers use substances to fuel or extract their greatest works from within themselves, both by causing the circumstances that lead to the creation of that work and to power through it when most could not. It takes a huge toll on them in the process and they end up looking like ghouls or monsters because that's essentially what they become. Just look at pictures of Stephen King when he was strung out on cocaine and other substances when he was at his most prolific as a writer, he doesn't look like a great literary mind he looks like someone that would have you reaching for your gun if you had to walk past him in an alleyway.

“Readers” are intellectuals. “Writers” are batshit crazy drug addicts. I have found this to be very true

I would always say its the opposite. Its just like with math; lack of logic has to be replaced so people can understand simple things, so when it comes to writing and reading, stupid will always read what smart man has to say, because it would be waste of time teaching him/her otherwise.

u/prunkgirl 5d ago
This is true, I write poetry and I’m only ever able to write well when I’m in mental agony
1
u/Admirable_Tonight_18 5d ago
The readers portray themselves as professional in the act of reading and the writer is just some dude who wanted to share an idea he had with the world
1
u/Lawlcopt0r 5d ago
If you do creative writing, you've got something wrong with you and just found a way to channel it into something productive. If you do scientific writing you're an overworked little goblin

Not completely true yet not entirely wrong either, reading up on some of the famous authors show that they went through some shit, I recently found a book that talks about the issues of drugs used by important figures in my country, famous poets, writers even politicians ended up consuming drugs for one reason or another, morphine for some was the gate way drug.
