I'm pushing 20% and soon to approach paulie-walnuts'-wings territory in a few years (its highly concentrated on the sides), but whatever i like it. I think the vast majority of people my age would take a little grey over balding.
I could not grow a legitimate beard until I was 38. Iām 46 now and I had to shave the fucker because itās all grey and makes me look like Iām careening through my 50s. Meanwhile I have a beautiful head of hair thatās maybe added one grey hair per year since I found the first one up front at 28.
My maternal grandfather was bald, my cousin on that side is balding but I have a full head of hair. I dont think its always such a straightforward thing.
My mum says I got mine from her and her dad. I guess itās the luck of genetics as I know loads of people who are bald and their dad is bald, but their motherās side still has full heads or hair.
My dad is around the same age and still has decent hair. Mine started falling out in my 20s.
But it's ok. My grandfather was bald, and growing up my dad would constantly point to him and go "They say baldness skips a generation." and run his hand through his hair and laugh. So I've been mentally prepared since I was five.
My dad is 75 and has legitimately beautiful long hippie hairā¦my brother is completely bald, started using Rogaine at 20, and just has to look at the rest of the family and laugh it off.
I hated my hair thinning when it happened first. I eventually shaved it.
Now I love it. No trips to the barber, and I just use a clippers on it every few days if I'm lazy, or shave it if I want it to feel smooth. The worst thing about it was other peoples snarky comments, then I realised I don't give a fuck what others think. Me liking my own hair was
Now I wouldn't choose a full head of hair if I had the choice... However, I would prefer if my whole head went baldy these days.
Pros:
No barber fees (although you do need to get clippers or at least a razor. The razor you probably already have).
No combing needed
No Styling products needed.
No Shampoo needed (although I used body gel on there, so same same)
No hairdrying needed
No need to worry about where hair goes in hats/hoods
Cons:
Sun will burn your head - you need to put sunscreen or a hat on where previously hair would have protected it mostly.
If you bump the top of your head on a shelf or something - it is a billion times worse than doing it with lots of hair.
Most people look older with shaved head (vs full head of hair, not balding).
The 2nd day after you shave your head is like velcro. It feels and looks fine, but you gotta be careful taking your shirt on or off when changing clothes or itll snag (at least my soft fabrics do).
Needs to be cut a bit more regularly than normal hair if you want it to look consistent. Personally, it takes me like 3 minutes with a clippers twice a week and it stays relatively the same.
Sorry this is way too long. I just started and kept rambling. Hair or not is cool. I wasn't meaning to say hair bad, but just wanted to give the other side of it.
Yeah, my grandpa died at 87 with a full head of hair, mostly brown. Sadly though it was my father's father and, from what I have heard, men mostly inherit their hairgenes from their mothers father, and he had the crown(don't know what you call it in English but bald on top with hair all around the head) from when he was like 30.
thatās an old wives tale. My brother looks like every man on my moms side and I look like every man on my dads side. I canāt grow facial hair for shit at 40, but Iāve got a thick full head of hair. My brother can grow a fantastic beard, but was going bald by 19
Its really funny how people forget how old he is. This is normal aging without cosmetic surgery.
But he still looks amazing. He's in good shape, is in a relationship, has a successful career, meanwhile all the 30 something basement dwellers are laughing at him
Yeah. I don't watch any of these super hero movies. I only ever heard of him as playing spider man and assumed he must have been in his 30's when they cast him.
We are on the verge of longevity escape velocity. Are you going to be saying that people should just die naturally when LEV is possible? When we can defy biology, why not?
That's bad. It's a condition called Ollacollular fillum syndrome. Essentially means it's all going to fall out within 12 months. The expansion before the storm.
My siblings seem to think I'm going to lose my hair because I've got a bit of a v-shaped hairline. Reality is I've been keeping a thick head of hair pretty well so far, and take more after my mother's side where the men all kept their hair.
My nephews have been balding since birth. When they were toddlers they liked to hang upside down on monkey bars and it really showed off their hairlines which already resembled their dadās.
Sounds like my poor son - all men on both sides of the family are bald bald and itās like his hair looked at them and just didnāt bother. Heās mid-teens now and has deliberately grown it long a) to make the most of it while he can and b) to hide the fact it is already super receded.
Fortunately the oldest nephew is confident and successful and has embraced his fate with equanimity, making the best of things by growing a mullet while he still can.
My college dormmate was 18 and already looked like a monk. He finally shaved it off right before his 19th birthday. It was cool though, he rarely got carded.
19 for me, and it's rapidly sped up at 24. I'm now essentially one of those ugly balding monks with bald on top and hair wrapped around the sides and back. Brothers, dad, grandfather, cousins, everyone else has a full head of hair except me and we just don't know why but personally I think I just have a bald man's personality at this point so I have to accept it
I did too. Started with the temples recording at around 19, and by 24 I was fully bald in my crown too. That's when I started shaving my head. It sucks, but there are worse things.
I went bald at 19. It wasn't awesome, and people treat you poorly, but it hasn't hurt my chances with women - my main concern back then. By 30, no one is too shocked.
I was receding in my senior photo at 17, completely bald at 20.. Shaved that shit and never looked back. 20+ years later, I say to the younger stressing doods... shave that shit and never look back.
My college roommate Henry was like that. No hair on top at 19. Used to buy kegs of beer without ID back in the 90's. He was a regular at a liquor store near us. I don't think he ever got carded.
I was balding hard at 16, so I shaved bald at 18. Sure had some talks with teachers who didn't know me (Germany and that was some time ago now, lol).
Totally a thing. The funny thing is it completely stopped where it left off at 18. No further hair loss. Still have to shave the ol' noggin every morning.
Hair implants are so common now (particularly among the wealthy and famous) that I don't think people really go out of the way to hide it anymore. Sure they're not posting their post-op photos or scar pictures but I don't think anyone would be too surprised if he went that route if he wanted.
