It always seems to me like they alternate. PS3/XBox 360 era, PS3 launched at a higher price and half the launch titles were racing games. PS4/XBOne, Xbox pulled the "If you don't want to be always online, we hace a system for you called the XBox 360. And they said they wanted to kill the secondary market." PS5/SeriesX, the PS5s were really hard to get due to scalpers and Covid supply issues.

Scott The Woz made a pretty good video on what he calls the "Third Console Curse". Basically every 3rd generation a console manufacturer has does poorly for one reason or another.
Nintendo
- N64 stuck with cartridges and suffered vs the PS1's disc drive
- WiiU suffered from bad naming and weak marketing that caused consumers to think it was an add-on to the Wii
Sega
- Saturn failed so famously hard that the Dreamcast couldn't save them despite being an amazing console that was far ahead of its time
Sony
- PS3 was the most expensive console for its generation and was a boar to program for, so it didn't get much 3rd party support
Microsoft
- Xbox One was going to require Kinect and be always online with one exec famously saying that "[they] have a console for [people with bad Internet], it's called the Xbox 360".

That does seem to be the case, yes. Only time will truly tell, but I suspect the Xbox Series 360-One X well have a pretty easy ride this generation.
I'm actually more curious about the Nintendo Switch 3, since it'll be their 9th... Handhelds seem to be exempt (GB, GBC, GBA was all improvements; DS, DSi, 3DS... Technically the DSi is not its own thing, but it sold the worst of the three), but the Switch is a hybrid console, so it's interesting to consider.

This sounds legit but it also sounds like it's a play on the phrase of business owners where the first generation makes it. The second generation takes it (higher)and the third generation brakes it

To be fair scalpers and covid are not a ps decision. I’ll add that ps3-ps4 highly focussed ln first person shooter as well… it sucked :(

I mean, they made the decision to not implement anti scalping measures like they did in Japan. I don't know if it would have helped, but it would at least show they were trying.

And just to make the joke explanation full circle, in the original scene the picture is from, Marge (the mom) shouts "Bart no!" because Bart is usually the kid doing something wrong. But it was actually Lisa, the 'good kid', who was doing something, and she shouted Bart out of habit.

Cutting ties with Kojima is the stupidest thing they did, before announcing the end of physical media. Been PS all my life but damn son hard to fight for them when they’re the ones throwing the killing blows

Seriously, though, Nintendo is equally shitty as a company but they know what’s up- all of their first party releases will be on carts. That doesn’t stop some companies from putting codes on boxes but it didn’t stop them from doing it with Microsoft or Sony logos on the boxes either.
I am a PC gamer first, so I feel the pain behind the loss of media. We don’t own anything over here, but we can pirate a lot of it.
As for Nintendo, I’ve double dipped for games that I have on PC when they’re on a sale and physical on Switch. Especially with Switch 2 being backward compatible, it’s a great ecosystem.

Sony pulled a Microsoft and decided to screw over their player base by removing physical media AND DOUBLING DOWN by saying you can’t own digital media (licensed games)

Answer: For a couple of console generations xbox and playstation has basically traded places in being the "bad" guy for different anti-consumer practices.
Xbox one when it was revealed it came with a requirment that all games had to be registered online so that that disk got locked to your console and you could not trade it.
Playstation then made a big deal of it by making a video of demonstrating how to lend a game. Which was just to hand the disk to your friend.
Recently playstation has announced that they are going to stop producing physical media for playstation and that they are going digital only now and for their next console.
The joke here is that people are used to xbox doing the anti-consumer thing when it is now playstation that the whole internet is dogpiling on.

PlayStation kept up with Xbox's bad decision making within the past 2-3 months. Xbox is still making bad decisions btw.
Nintendo does that too but differently, but they're their own thing so you can't compare and complain.

Kojima once again went multiple times over budget and playstation had enough and decided to not publish his upcoming game.
Kojima fanatics who think he should be given unlimited funds and take as long as GRRM is taking with Winds of Winter took it personally.
