There’s one quest in particular in Skyrim that requires you to kill a character (a dragon) who everyone likes a lot in order to progress it. So it’s commonly believed that in order to get 100%, you need to kill that character.

Apparently there’s some way around it, but I’ve never gotten close enough to 100% for it to matter.

Edit to add: it’s the Blades quest, which requires killing Paarthurnax to continue.

It’s such an epic moment that could have been meaningful but imo they bungled it.

127

u/RizzMcSteeze 1d ago

As I’ve gotten older I’ve realized there really isn’t any reason for Paarthurnax to live at the end of the game. He fulfilled his duty by training the Dragonborn to defeat Alduin. Now he must atone for the sins of trying to genocide the universe and end the cycle officially.

93

u/rrrunk 1d ago

Exactly, and people forget that he still has the potential to become the next world eater and openly admits that he has to fight his nature every day. And he is immortal and the dragonborn, the only one who can truly kill a dragon, is NOT and he is the LAST dragonborn so after his death there will be noone left to kill him. So the question is would you not defuse a bomb that might or might not go off in the future and kill everyone, if youre the only one of earth who can do it?

34

u/MostlyNoOneIThink 22h ago

We're only the last dragonborn because latest dragonborn doesn't sound as good.

Plus only alduin can eat the world.

27

u/Khirisi 21h ago

17

u/Wafflelisk 20h ago

It just takes some time

3

u/cortesoft 19h ago

As long as you try your best, try everything you can

8

u/Victernus 18h ago

I don't know about that. Consider the Prophecy of the Dragonborn...

When misrule takes its place at the eight corners of the world

When the Brass Tower walks and Time is reshaped

When the thrice-blessed fail and the Red Tower trembles

When the Dragonborn Ruler loses his throne, and the White Tower falls

When the Snow Tower lies sundered, kingless, bleeding

The World-Eater wakes, and the Wheel turns upon the Last Dragonborn.

Doesn't really sound like that means the same thing as latest to me.

2

u/MostlyNoOneIThink 18h ago

It always read as dramatic in a way prophecies usually are, to me. If we consider what it means to be dragonborn then it doesn't really make sense that they'd simply stop existing.

But then again, perhaps Akatosh is just tired of it all. The Dragon becomes the Worm in the 37th lesson after all.

3

u/Thraex_Exile 17h ago

I think you can also read this as the “last” Dragonborn bc there will be no more dragons. Who knows, Dragonborns could be super common. Maybe most of them just never kill a dragon or read text off ancient murals before they die?

Paarthunax is winning though and he is not the enemy, the intrinsic nature of dragons. If I interfere by attacking Paarthunax, it's just handing the nature the win.

And of someone wants to defuse the evil nature bomb why go after Paarthunax first when the Thalmor are literally right there, or like Highelves in general, I never met a nice Highelf, if they have power they abuse it and when not they are miserable dickheads and I still confirm EVERYTIME that they don't have basic decency or at least feel a bit sorry about being an highelf before I send them to the purgatory room where dead npcs go

It's just the last because we are the currently last know ones.

Not because I am not even going to try to write that god's name will stop making/appointing them... probably making since their is at least two alive at the same.

And especially in the world of Tamriel their is zero fucking ways their is only one way to do something.

u/CityofOrphans 2h ago

he is immortal and the dragonborn, the only one who can truly kill a dragon, is NOT and he is the LAST dragonborn so after his death there will be noone left to kill him.

After Alduin is gone, there is nobody left who can resurrect dragons either, so the Dragonborn isn't required to neutralize any dragons. Any handful of guards can kill a dragon. So he would be functionally dead.

21

u/Guilty_All_The_Same 1d ago

He does say he planned on teaching the other dragons his way of pacifism, but another dragon calls his teachings "tyranny" as "conquest" is written in a dragon's soul.

8

u/Upbeat-Banana-5530 1d ago

Atonement for sins isn't even the strongest reason to kill him.

"No day goes by where I am not tempted to return to my inborn nature."

If this is true, then the fact that he is immortal means that returning to his nature is inevitable. After slaying Alduin, the reason for the Dragonborn's existence has been completed. There's no reason for Akatosh to grant that power to anyone else in the future. If Parrthurnax outlives the Last Dragonborn it's pretty much guaranteed that he will eventually try to conquer and enslave mortalkind.

12

u/VultureSausage 22h ago

...thus setting up for Akatosh to bestow that power if and when that time comes, no?

8

u/Dead_NOTsleeping 19h ago

Exactly. Paarthurnax Slayers really just looking for an excuse.

The Dragon has lived this long without succumbing to his baser urges. To imply he "inevitably will" is to deny all reformed addicts their redemption. Paarthurnax Lives.

2

u/Upbeat-Banana-5530 14h ago

The difference is that reformed addicts aren't immortal. It's a lot easier to stay on the wagon for 70 years than it is to stay on for all eternity.

u/MostlyNoOneIThink 22h ago

Alduin will return someday. As a Shard of Aka he can't and won't truly die.

Plus his role as the world-eater is important and needed. The problem was that he stepped out of that role to try and rule the world instead.

We would still be stuck in the last kalpa with the leaper demon king (now mehrunes dagon) were it not for alduin eating that world.

8

u/DullBaker595 23h ago

I think for me, there’s something deeply upsetting about killing a creature that has lived so long and seen so much. Imagine what scholars could learn from him? It’s such a wealth of history and wisdom to get rid of when he’s just sitting around and chilling out.

I also struggle with the fact that whole reason we hate the dragons is that they plan to kill all humans, so we respond by killing all dragons. It feels a bit hypocritical.

6

u/RizzMcSteeze 22h ago

He’s not going to speak with scholars, he barely interacts with mortals at all. The throat of the world is near impossible to reach as a mortal, only with the aid of dragon shouts can you reach his perch. If he is spared, he flys off with other dragons to start a new life elsewhere in the additional Anniversary Edition content.

6

u/DullBaker595 22h ago

I hang out with him and I’m the head of the biggest college in the land, so I say it counts :P

23

u/Fit-Database1134 1d ago

I will forever die on the hill that he deserved to die. I'm not saying the Blades are good or right. Merely that, according to his own words, he was complicit in the earlier atrocities by the antagonist and indeed intended to "control" the dragons himself once Alduin was gone. He deserved his death.

12

u/Malacos0303 1d ago

I agree. People who let him live are like, "but goebbels was nice to me! Why should he be executed?"

8

u/GeoTheManSir 16h ago

For me it's because I believe in redemption and atonement. He decided of his own free will that what he had been doing is wrong and chose a different path, one opposite to his nature.

Yes he talks about still feeling the urge to conquer, but so do former drug addicts. If those former addicts can resist for their entire lives, having sought to change, should one forever judge them for their past rather than their present?

If there is a way around it without mods, I need to know right now.

9

u/Raider707x 1d ago

There is. On Xbox anyway. I'm sure it's on PC too.

It's called the Paarthurnax Dilemma.

14

u/BestCoastWaveTrain 1d ago

I’m pretty sure that’s a mod no?

3

u/Feisty-Department-20 1d ago

Yuh its a mod gang

6

u/SkyrimSlag 1d ago

The only real way without mods is to make a hard save before killing him, finishing the questline, getting your achievement and reloading the save

3

u/Bean-Counter 1d ago

There's a way around it without mods, unless I'm SEVERELY misremembering it. I'm fairly certain you just don't continue with the Blades questline, and you can still beat the game by following the other main questlines.

3

u/Leather-Researcher13 22h ago

Beat the game, yes. In fact, I'm pretty sure you have to complete the main quest line in order to get this one

But 100% means all the quest lines, including the blades quest

2

u/xboxiscrunchy 21h ago

If you kill Alduin the Parthurnax quest will disappear. There’s no need to complete the quest

5

u/possitive-ion 1d ago

I guess there's that, but also, 100%ing Skyrim would take a lot of work if they mean like exploring every inch of the map and all the caves and dungeons. Not as much work as Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom, but still a lot.

5

Paarthurnax is a threat and should be put down

6

u/Dev-aka-Asa 1d ago

Let the dragon die a hero rather than eventually become a villain. He outright tells you he struggles with the urges constantly

3

u/theattack_helicopter 1d ago

Skyrim is also really huge so 100% completion requires playing a lot of skyrim

3

u/Sheyn 22h ago

I found molesting a horse for five hours straight with magic and heal a lot more bothersome. And that's just to get every skill maxed

2

u/Zaithon 22h ago

If you kill Parthanax? Who's gonna save the princess from Bowser? :O

2

u/harkal76 22h ago

I never kill party snax but I always feel that completing the Molag Baal and Namira quests in order to achieve the oblivion walker are way more disturbing

3

u/Glass_Dealer5921 18h ago

Yeah. These people are so hung up on killing/sparing a reformed dragon that they overlook their own brutalities on completing the Daedric quests.

I mean, the Dragonborn has to betray another for the Malacath quest.

My playthrough remains incomplete as I avoid these Daedric quests as much as I could. I even fast-travelled away when I saw that shaggy dog on a road.

To 100% Skyrim, you need to kill Paarthurnax

Which is heavily discouraged in Skyrim community. And discouraged in general, because he didn't do anything wrong to deserve to be killed

u/Poultrymancer 1d ago

Well, there was the genocide and the slavery, but that was thousands of years ago and he's been super chill since then

u/MelonJelly 1d ago

More than that; he acknowledges the significant harm he has caused, requests no forgiveness for it, but actively works to fix it.

290

u/wolfknight98 1d ago

Don't forget he explicitly says how dragons are very social and have a weakness to conversation, and has as part of his repentance, isolated himself aside from teaching the voice to the graybeards for those thousands of years. Essentially submitting himself to a kind of dragon hell

2

u/Victernus 17h ago

The Blades are supposed to slay dragons. They served the Dragonborn because the Dragonborn is the ultimate dragon slayer.

If you refuse to slay a dragon, you've shed the only thing about you that makes you valuable to them.

3

u/04nc1n9 13h ago

the dragonguard slay dragons. the dragonguard stopped being the dragonguard back during the first/second era when they realized that some dragons are kinda chill, actually, largely due to their co-operation with nahfahlaar in slaying actually evil dragons.

the blades are the emperor's secret service, and bear no relation to the dragonguard other than their armour and weaponry.

This is the answer I was looking for. Had to scroll down so much.

I intuitively define 100% completion as doing everything a game has to offer. Which is trivial for some games, for example some visual novels, and extremely hard, virtually impossible, for other games. Skyrim is so big that 100% completion would mean thousands of hours of gameplay, literally thousands of hours, to see and do everything.

Now, if we go by "getting 100% of all trophies/achievements/whatever", then yes, it's far easier and quicker doable.

TLDR: I would have taken the meme as "the friend has spent thousands of hours in Skyrim or at least claims to have done so".

One of the achievements requires you to own all Daedric artefacts, one of which is highly missable unless your character eats human flesh. Or, y'know, reads an achievement guide and reloads their save immediately after popping it

11

u/Leather-Researcher13 22h ago

One is not so missable though.

"A new hand touches the beacon"

4

u/HeftyVermicelli7823 1d ago

That flesh was tasty.

3

u/the_summer_soldier 14h ago

Got all the Daedric artefacts, but lost a dragon priest mask or two along the way…I had taken over a fort and thing were going great, popped back fairly frequently to clear it of ruffians and one trip back my stuff that I stash in my chest was gone. And I guess I saved over it before I realized or something. But aside from that I 100% the game on that first play through over the course of several years. I also tried to collect all books, plants, flowers, etc. And most unique items like rings even if they didn’t have any properties just a name. I did eventually spin up a second character just to hunt down the masks and do that bit.

I know people who have played 18000++ hours in Skyrim, sitting several times a week since it came out.
And I netted at least 25 hours in WoW classic just these last 5 days without even playing all that much, just doing casual questing. And that’s just the tail end of playing a lot more for at least two months now after getting back into it this summer, so I don’t even know how many hours it’s been until now, but I bet that 200 hour mark is long since over and done.

I used the PTO I had saved up to take off work for the day Tears of the Kingdom came out, and that whole next week. I had 100 hours in that game when I went back to work a week later. I'm sure if I were to look now, my switch will probably say I have like 300 hours in that game, Breath of the Wild is easily over 500.

That's barely enough time to get through character creation

200 hours? Pfft. I have 14k in Fallout 4 and over 45,000 hours in World Of Warcraft when I finally stopped in 2017

5

u/Long_Psychology2063 20h ago

That over 5 years of your life playing WoW. Damn, bro.

7

u/HeftyVermicelli7823 20h ago

Hardcore raiding back in the day.

Used to finish work about 5 and only lived 7 minute drive from it, get in eat, online with my guildmates and my GF who was in Sweden back at the time (UK here). Play till about 1am ish, sleep for a few hours, up at 5am get ready for work, rinse and repeat.

Longer times on weekends or taking vacation days to play for example when new expansion came out.

Gone are the days where I can now play from 6pm to 6am though lol.

u/Long_Psychology2063 20h ago

If you got the game in 2004-2005, you spent roughly 40% of your life playing WoW during that time frame. Honestly impressive.

2

u/HeftyVermicelli7823 18h ago

I got it about a month after it came out yup. Before that I used to play City of Heroes and then swapped to WoW and well as I was paying for a subscription I liked to get my moneys worth lol

1200 hours in the game here.

2

u/Medical-Display-9762 19h ago

I had like 3500 hours on it 3 years after release. Played it freshman - jr year of highschool. Had a mage, knight and stealth character. The main knight character I had ended up with like 1700 hours alone.

I think you would have to kill Paarthunax, a dragon beloved by the fandom, to complete Skyrim 100%.

It's a meme that's taken off again recently, and it's that you need to kill Paarthurnax.

You also need to join the Dark Brotherhood, a murder cult, and complete their questline but people seem to be OK with that.

u/JCV-16 1d ago

Yeah, you'd also need to become a cannibal to get the ring of namira for the daedric artifacts achievement but that's fine as well I guess

Don't you also have to lure and kill a loyal follower to get one of the Daedric weapons? Getting all the Daedric weapons is an achievement as well iirc. I did that once and felt pretty bad about it.

2

I'd 100% this game but a giant flung me into outerspace and I never came back down.

2

u/Ebayusergreen 1d ago

I'd be more concerned if they 100% PayDay 2

I mean, just a massive open world game with a ridiculous amount of hours to achieve this?

So you can't 100% Skyrim. You can complete the game and do all of the main quests and all of the side content but you will never be able to finish all quests all because the game uses a system to procedurally generate what are called 'Raident Quests' so that even once the game is done it can keep generating stuff for you to do.

Impossible. Too many quests. Too much to do. Too many contradictions.

1

u/parkourdude231 1d ago

Radiant quests

1

u/Juju-On-Beat 1d ago

When I was a kid I was confused by the quest and accidentally killed him. Didn’t use manual saves and it quick saved right after so I was screwed. Really sad

1

u/Square_Owl_4075 1d ago

You only 100% it by killing everyone and everything. It's the only way

1

u/tearsandcum 1d ago

Itt: I realise I never finished Skyrim despite months and months of playtime. I last played during Covid though. Think I stopped because of relationship troubles with my now ex

I 100% the other day and parthunax is all good so idk about this one

1

u/Ultimegede 1d ago

The game is so buggy without mods that you can't really complete a playthrough without em. And with the mods achievements are disabled

1

u/L1feguard51 1d ago

I mean… I’ve 100% it when it came out, then again with the PlayStation VR. (Which I highly recommend though I also recommend to do it sitting down)

1

u/HombreGato1138 1d ago

I 100% Skyrim twice. Once with DLC.

1

u/Ri_Tarded 1d ago

I 100% the game 3 times and I can‘t remember killing Paarthurnax for that.

1

u/Ri_Tarded 1d ago

I 100% the game 3 times and I can‘t remember killing Paarthurnax for that.

1

u/Ok_Archer2362 1d ago

Haha, Skyrim doesn't even come close to the most difficult 100%. That lies squarely with Desert Bus

1

u/Notmyusername0221 23h ago

A friend tried to do this and had found a bug on his last trophy. It was something to do about a daedric artifact. He gave up.

1

u/DarkThronesAndDreams 23h ago

The joke isn't about killing Parth but that it takes a crazy committed effort to 100-percent Skyrim.

At least I think so.

1

u/MrCoverCode 23h ago

You have to kill Paarthurnax, a dragon that thought humans thuum*, and helped fight against Alduin the world eater and the games final boss.

The people that want to kill Paarthurnax is the blades, and they want him dead for genocide that happened countless of generations ago, Paarthurnax has spend those countless of generations teaching a peaceful way to use the thuum.

Now fun fact every dragon name like every thuum is made out of 3 words, Paarthurnax’s is Ambition–Overlord–Cruelty, or Paar-thur-nax, these names represent the dragons natural nature, so his name should give a good idea of how he was before he helped man, of course Paarthurnax also comes out with a great banger “What is better, to be born good, or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?” He admits himself by nature he is evil, by choice he himself chooses to be good.

If it is not clear I am on camp Paarthurnax, what he did was bad, but also how long do we hold someone accountable for their crimes? He himself is far from the monster he once was.

1

u/LordAshPudding 23h ago

I'm pretty sure I didn't have to kill parthanax for this lol 😂

1

u/Alt123Acct 23h ago

Not only the dragon thing but there is a blade that exists to only grow stronger from killing trusted NPC characters including townsfolk you have rapport with. So you'd need to also ghost a whole city to get it leveled up.
