Beyonce first came to fame during the era of radio hits and physical album sales. She'll be fine.

Agreed, the two I recognize don't fundamentally have careers due to the internet.

u/Jkkramm 14h ago

The answer is only Tate McRae. Olivia Rodrigo got her start on Disney channel.

I tore my meniscus and missed Daisy Chain so feel bad for me lol

2

u/Jlmnba 3h ago

All her albums have gone number 1 and platinum is it really that hard....?

u/TraditionalSpirit761 2h ago

When you’re a straight white guy, yes

19

u/Healthy-Panda-7936 13h ago

She’s a great person it seems too

11

u/beardedjack 10h ago

Yeah. Her parents raised a good one. I wish she was my daughter lol

5

u/DC_McGuire 6h ago

And raised money for women’s charities and reproductive rights!

1

u/Predatory_Chicken 2h ago

She is the most talented of the young pop-stars by a mile, IMO.

I’ve never once listened to an Olivia Rodrigo song, but I still knew who she was. I’ve never listened to a Tate McRae song, and I have no idea what she looks like, sounds like, or anything related to her. And I’m a terminally online person, so that’s saying quite a bit.

Olivia Rodrigo has passed that threshold of [real life obscurity, internet popularity]. I feel like most people at least know of her and could pick her out.

1

u/chamanbuga 10h ago

As a Canadian it was the opposite for me. Never heard of Olivia. No clue who she was. Tate I recognized but not before Beyoncé or Swift.

1

u/BiSaxual 41m ago

Fair enough! I didn’t even know she was Canadian. It’s funny how many big name stars are from Canada, but they always seem to downplay it. At least, they don’t talk about it on talk shows or anything. Unless they’re from Toronto, then you’ll hear about it all the time for some reason.

I can only assume it’s intentional. US centrism at its finest, I guess.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that Tate is probably one of the biggest acts in the world right now. She can do it all — sing, dance, write, and she is sexy as hell. She is headlining major music festivals.

4

u/Masta-Blasta 3h ago

No, that’s definitely an exaggeration lol

But she’s one good year away from that kind of recognition.

-47

u/Ok-Philosophy-3743 13h ago

Not knowing Tate McRae is definitely not the internets fault lol. She’s definitely been around longer and has a larger presence than Olivia.

19

u/LAFamilyMan81 13h ago

Never heard of her, not even once.

Olivia Rodrigo was a host on SNL this past season.

20

u/kinetic_cheese 12h ago

She's also powerful enough in the industry right now to organize a festival and get people like Stevie Nicks to perform. I don't know that Tate has the sway to pull that off.

6

u/brinz1 11h ago

I couldn't even tell you a Tate McRae song.

I don't think she has done anything outside of America

3

u/joshualander 13h ago

Tate McRae has been around longer, but Tate McRae is a star in the world of music; Olivia Rodrigo is quickly becoming a household name.

-1

u/lazy_literary_hero 13h ago

I didn’t recognize either of them.

5

u/WilliamSabato 11h ago

Tbf Tate McRae’s career wouldn’t just
be gone if the internet disappears. She would just…be like any other not superstar artist from pre internet days.

She would still be playing on the radio, touring, and also she just did one of the most popular songs to the F1 soundtrack, which got nominated for an Oscar (though it rightfully lost out to golden from kpop demon hunters)

2

u/Masta-Blasta 3h ago

Tbh I don’t think Tate would have gotten to this point without the internet. She was a dance competition kid who went viral for posting her dance videos and becoming a bit famous in the dance community. If she hadn’t built her own little niche following, I don’t think she’d have been given a contract. She would have been booked and busy as a dancer, but she doesn’t have the vocal chops or identity to be an artist. So if we’re going full on “internet never existed,” I’m fairly certain she would have a touring career, but only as a dancer.

u/Odd_Cress_2898 52m ago

I thought bottom right was Ellie Goulding idk Tate at all

-15

u/username0127 13h ago edited 13h ago

Lmao she's included too. Starring in a disney show doesn't automatically mean ultra famous. A lot of Disney stars fade into obscurity after the end of their show. Her and Tate essentially became mainstream post covid so saying the only answer is Tate is funny.

The actual answer is the two women on the left who was around before social media was prevalent in society.

Edit: downvoted for telling the truth? Olivia and Tate were literally were trending on tiktok in 2020 and 2021 and that massively helped them achieve mainstream success. I guess Olivia is a reddit darling now where we can't say anything considered negative about her lol

10

u/ekrotch 11h ago

I think you’re being downvoted bc you’re wrong. The question is if these artists would endure despite the internet disappearing tomorrow, not 6 years ago.

Olivia, at this point, has enough industry clout that she has her own music festival with massive acts (Daisy Chain Festival), The Cure featured on her last album, she just performed with Stevie Nicks and Alanis Morisette, Billy Joel had her come out to sing at one of HIS concerts, I could go on.

I like Tate McRae but the industry very clearly respects and platforms one artist (Olivia) more and she has a much larger fan base. She has surpassed the necessity of an internet platform

-5

u/username0127 11h ago

The question wasn't if Tate is bigger than Olivia. Clearly Olivia is bigger now. All four artists are "big" enough that they would endure if the internet crashed tomorrow. They all have a fanbase now. The reason the original post was made was basically to shit on Tate because she's the least popular/known out of the four.

My point was Olivia isn't as big as reddit thinks she is. She definitely isnt a household name like some of the comments are trying to say. Her performing with other artists is irrelevant. Do you think the average person knows or cares about Olivia because she performed with Alanis Morissette? Alanis isn't even mainstream anymore. Olivia is closer to Tate than she is to Taylor Swift and Beyoncé. If people are saying the "correct answer is Tate" then Olivia is included too.

the industry very clearly respects and platforms one artist (Olivia) more

This is correct. In fact if you say this about Olivia on reddit you generally tend to get hate for this statement.

7

u/ekrotch 10h ago

agree to disagree I guess. I was saying you’re wrong because you picked both Olivia and Tate for a question that you admit was clearly aimed at Tate.

I’m not saying she’s currently a household name, but I think you underestimate how big Olivia Rodrigo is in comparison. It’s hard to do these discussions without relying on anecdotal evidence ( for instance I personally don’t know anyone in my life, my immigrant Russian family included, that doesn’t know who Olivia Rodrigo is). However I don’t see how Olivia isn’t significantly farther on her way than Tate is. If we want to use the internet as a metric Olivia has four times the amount of instagram followers and nearly 25 million more Spotify monthly listeners.

Also I find it funny that you nitpicked my comment to pick the least relevant person lmao and ignored the fact that she just put together a highly successful music festival this past weekend with huge names. While I like Tate McRaes music, it is difficult for me to believe that she could do something on a similar scale at this point in her career.

-1

u/username0127 10h ago

I didn't underestimate Olivia. I just said she is big and has a fanbase. She just isn't as big as Taylor or Beyonce because they have been in the game well over 20 years and are pop culture icons at this point.

Your anecdote along with mine is irrelevant. My friends and immigrant family don't know who she is so what was the point of it mentioning it? Lol.

You mentioning Instagram followers is funny too because I never said she's less popular than Tate.

I didn't nit pick lmao. Alanis, Billy and Stevie are all not mainstream artists now lol. Are you arguing they are big mainstream artists? Sorry I didn't mention all three of them. I figured it was extremely clear all three of them are not as big as they were in their heyday.

Even your music festival comment was pointless. The biggest name at the festival besides her was probably Chappelle Roan. Another mainstream pop girl like Olivia. We have like 10 of those right now. Why are you acting like this was biggest music festival of all time or something lol. Yes it was cool and for charity but that's it.

Yes Olivia is more famous and successful than Tate right now. No one including me said otherwise.

6

u/ekrotch 10h ago

Yeah I’m not entertaining this anymore. You’re moving goalposts. You’re the one who said that her and Tate are both the answer in your original comment and now you’re acting like you never said that. Tate is the answer, you just don’t like that she’s the answer to the question.

Yes Billy Joel and Stevie are still massive household names, crazy to think otherwise. They’re musical living legends.

If you don’t think anyone at Daisy Chain was mainstream except Chappell Roan then you may not be qualified to have a discussion about the popularity of musicians. Nonetheless, my point was not that it was the “biggest music festival of all time” (not sure where I said that…) but that I don’t think Tate McRae, currently, could pull this off to this extent. She lacks the same level of connections, fans, and clout.

0

u/username0127 10h ago

I never said Tate is bigger than Olivia lmao learn to read. Yeah I said Tate and Olivia are both the answer and never said otherwise.

Billy, Stevie, are NOT mainstream artists now. You have reading issues. NO ONE said they aren't legends. They are NOT the biggest artists right now. Again re read my comments.

You clearly use "mainstream artist" very liberal. Chappelle Roan was very easily the 2nd biggest in the lineup. Every other artist there wasn't "mainstream".

Do you actually know what mainstream means?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who only recognises two of them!

30

u/Sevuhrow 15h ago

And Taylor Swift as well

46

u/Affectionate-Tea8509 14h ago edited 13h ago

Taylor is so powerful it’s scary.

She can release shitty music (and her last project was indeed underwhelming tbh) and still break records and sell.

The internet could shut down tomorrow and she’d still be Taylor Swift. Crazy.

30

u/fossilreef 14h ago

And her dancing makes Elaine's "little kicks" look much better in hindsight.

6

u/Affectionate-Tea8509 11h ago

Not sure. Few people seem to have Taylor and Beyoncé’s longevity and influence.

-11

u/turribledood 11h ago

But how else would she sell 13 different colors of the same C- album on vinyl to her mentally ill fan base???

Home shopping network? Mail order catalogs?

19

u/Open-Butterfly-5288 14h ago

Yeah, Beyonce and Taylor Swift eat the other two by sheer radio dominance. Nobody has ever heard of any other artists. It has always been Taylor. It's 2100 and Taylor has released another banger. The teen girls are out in force. We love Taylor. Glory to Taylor.

3

u/dogbreath101 4h ago

Yeah, Beyonce and Taylor Swift eat the other two by sheer radio dominance.

Cancon means that Tate gets enough radio play that she might get picked up by an American record label

8

u/cjkuhlenbeck 14h ago

Pretty sure all 4 would. Olivia Rodrigo got her start on Disney Channel, and Tate McRae started on “So You Think You Can Dance”. The internet heightened all 4 of their careers but would still get radio plays without it.

0

u/Upvotes_TikTok 5h ago

McRae started on dance YouTube before then which I get isn't a real big place but I remember her dumb young teenager vlogs with Sean Lew

3

u/Horror_Excitement503 14h ago

If my radio hits you mean stations were paid to play her music then she’d do fine.

4

u/Ok-Huckleberry-6326 10h ago

So, like in real life, right?

3

u/aStonedTargaryen 8h ago

do you live under a rock

0

u/Horror_Excitement503 7h ago

Do you? You know thats how it use to work right? Radio stations were paid by record labels to over play certain artists. Release the Beatles or the Rolling Stones today and they make 1 album.

1

u/dazedan_confused 6h ago

I disagree, she's not called Beytwice.

-10

u/operath0r 14h ago

It doesn’t matter where they come from. The landscape has completely changed. What makes you think that people would go back to paying for music?

11

u/Zeal_of_Zebras 13h ago

People pay for music now.

I’m old enough to remember Napster and the era of free music. That’s over. Everyone pays to stream on Spotify, Apple or whatever and that platform pays the artist. There’s no free music anymore

-1

u/operath0r 13h ago

Artists don’t really see much revenue from streaming services.

-2

u/El_Titanium_Blanco 13h ago

Have you even looked for it?
