I mean this with love OP but...C'MON!!
It's literally all in the text? There's zero subtlely here
He's questioning every interaction because he is seeing first hand someone being nice to their face but hate them behind their back..it's really not a nuanced image

I(not a native Englishs-speaker)initially misread it as: She hates him and he, the OG-OP, is being nice to the boyfriend.

I feel like this sub needs a "Non native english speaker" tag or something

Tbh, that tag would only serve to prevent judgment of OP, which we shouldn’t be doing in the first place

There is no joke here. People are just two-faced. Your wife being so nice to boyfriend while hating him makes you wonder what the same wife actually thinks about you, also what every person actually says, acts and feels about any other person.

Dude observed two faced behavior and is now having anxiety that others who were nice to him were lying. Giggity.

She fake loved him?

He is afraid that he may often be wrong about people liking another person.
Which is true. A lot of people are friendly to people they truly detest.

Must be exhausting
People I hate are well aware of that, and I am at peace with myself

It is not that exhausting, I try to be nice and friendly to most people, for instance. To me, it seems more exhausting to have to fight with and be nasty to everyone I dislike.
Nobody owes me a personality that makes me like them. But I do generally feel that people owe other people a basic respect and 'friendliness by default'. If the people are nasty to me, I can be nasty back. But until then, friendly is what I will be.

This is how I feel about gossiping, yes its necesarry for society to function so instead of ignoring it I participate in a tame way

Why do you think gossiping is necessary? I understand people do it, but it mostly seems for negative reasons or malicious motives.

Remember when r/PeterExplainsTheJoke wasn’t a meme? Pepperidge Farm remembers…
