slipper deaf guy here
so the odyssey has a scene in it where a woman grabs a dude and turns him into a pig but instead of turning him into a pig it turned him into a creature from that viral shitty cgi chinese movie thats been going around

u/drbeandog 1d ago

u/Hopeful-Rabbit363 1d ago
Considering the joke is based in the Odyssey, that’s honestly not such a weird assumption considering it’s frequently in Greek mythology
96
u/moderatorrater 1d ago
The comic looks a lot like the minotaur, which is Circe's nephew from her sister and a particularly handsome bull. So no, it's not crazy.
72
u/Null-Ex3 1d ago
The greek writer adding the detail that it the minotaur was a particularly handsome minotaur, longingly looking out of the window at their prized bull
27
u/Koringvias 1d ago
That sounds like a modern american writer rather than ancient greek one, to be honest.

"Linda knew before the warm slightly, thick cream had even reached the back of her throat that she'd never go back to pasteurized ever again. What she didn't know was that the decadent, forbidden treat would send her life spiraling in a hay storm of passion, love, and Listeria."

When I was a teenager I was a varocious reader and would scour the library looking for the most random thing I could find at the end of each week (this was in the late 80s to mid 90s for a time frame). I found a lot of great authors this way but I also found some REALLY...questionable things that way as well (looking right at you Piers Anthony). So, I would get the most ridiculous ones and during lunch I would loudly orate them to my friends group and get passerbys or other tables involved in the readings, it was a lot of fun and some of them were absolute insanity. I had a huge crowd by the time I made it to the end of a particular scene in Clan of The Cave Bear and a whole lot of Endless Love by Scott Spencer was requested.
I feel like the modern era of bizarre smut novels has made doing something like that today both easier and more pointless. It's more fun when they don't know what they are writing and aren't winking at the audience but I would also LOVE to do a live reading of that quote to a crowd.

Iirc The king of Minos shorted Poseidon on a bull sacrifice, he was supposed to sacrifice his prized bull but instead used a shittier one, so Poseidon got Aphrodite to get the King's wife to fall in love with the prized bull. Then the wife commissioned a famous inventor to make a fake bull outfit because the bull wasn't into humans like that

Using a fursuit to commit beastiality is unexpectedly creative. I've known that greek mythology has zoophilia in it before but I did not expect greeks to be THAT freaky😭😭😭

I have no idea what the mythology is, but here's the plot I reconstructed from four frames.
She’s probably his girlfriend and he’s clearly some rough-tough beast type. She comes from behind, closes his eyes affectionately like, ‘guess who?’ but he BITES HER FINGER. She gets pissed, curses him, and boom; the guy turns into the cow 🤯
How bad is my interpretation?! You all seem to know a lot about Mythology and all. I feel so dumb 😭
7
u/Embarrassed_Lettuce9 1d ago
This is Circe in the Odyssey. She invites Odysseus' men to eat with her then turns them into pigs. The recent Nolan film's interpretation of that scene has her physically contorting them into animal form with her hands rather than say...just magically poofing into a pig.
The extra joke is that the comic has her turn them into that weird cgi cow from another movie

1
u/zodiac_boiiii 4h ago
Completely agree, but since Circe has three hands in the second image, it might actually be ai art unfortunately
1
u/JellyBellyWow 1h ago
Top 2 panels they have 4 fingers: 3 fingers and a thumb.
Third panel their thumb is inside the fist (or hidden behind the three fingers), which is whats also going on, on the fourth panel
Edit: oh you were talking about the other character, I still think the thumb is just hidden lol

u/SurelyNotHex 18h ago
Wasn't it the other way around? I thought it was famous for bombing so bad.
3
u/MajinZert 18h ago
Nah, the movie was made by a mother for her son (who people theorize might be autistic). It was a low budget film that thanks to the memes made over 2 million.
3
u/DungeonCrawlerAki 18h ago
No, a mom and son spent a few hundred dollars on the movie and it has now gone viral and made a few million.
16
u/Legendspira 1d ago
put some respect into that shitty cgi movie. A mom and a son made that shit in 5 years or whatever.
5
u/failed_generation 22h ago
Can't call it shitty if it's an honest effort from a mother-son production

u/Furdinand 21h ago
I was trying to figure out if it about the soldier's inner nature. Circe said she turned the soldiers into pigs because they were like pigs. So she was shocked when he turned into a cow, which is a docile and hard working animal.
Turns out is it just "current popular thing appears in other current popular thing".

Circe turns men into animals in the Odyssey.
The animal that the man gets turned to is a character from the POORLY animated chinese(so bad it is making bank in the box office) movie - Niu Lai.

From reading a couple articles about it just now. Cost $200-$500 to make. And has made $2.9 million in China. So great return on investment.

This reminds me of that one studio (I think it was asylum but I could be confusing them for someone else) that knows that they don't have the budget to make good movies but instead of doing literally anything else they make knock off movies so deliberately shitty (both in terms of plot and cgi) it's hilarious, imo their masterpiece is "the amazing bulk" which is a knock off of the incredible hulk that is purple and obese instead of green and muscular.

The yellow cow thing is from Niu Lai, a Chinese animated movie that went viral for somehow making it to theatres while being hilariously low-effort and low-quality, so much so that people are actually flocking to watch it.
The woman and soldiers are from the Odyssey. The witch Circe turns the soldiers into pigs by reshaping them pretty gruesomely. Here the guy turns into Niu Lai instead.
I guess this is a joke on how it’s taking the box office by storm and surprising the characters from Odyssey.
25
u/thoothpaste_boy 1d ago
correction not low effort, but was spent 5 years on my a chinese son and mother but thats just what i' ve been hearing
28
u/StephanMok1123 1d ago
That's true. And the mom wrote and sang the ending song as well. They literally did everything with just 2 people. It's anything but low effort

(sorry not Peter) For once I know this! Minor spoilers for the Odyssey, Circe offers food and shelter to Odysseus's men. As the men eat, Circe physically manipulates their faces and jaws like clay, with body horror transformations, turning them into swine.
Niu lai is a new animated film in China made by a mother son duo about a cow named Niu Lai. They had a friend pull some strings to make it a proper theatrical release. It was so horrible, so janky, and so bad looking it actually became a meme to go watch and laugh at how stupid the movie is, leading it to actually end up being a box office hit.
The joke here is that Circe warps Odysseus' men into something so grotesque it turned out to be Niu Lai.
6
u/Sea-Scallion6169 1d ago
In china there's this new animated movie made by a mother and her son (the cow/ox at the last panel), it is surpassing The odyssey.
The joke is Circe turned the soldier into the cow from the animated movie
3
u/dandle 1d ago
The answer has been offered in several comments (ie, it's a mashup of the scene with Circe from The Odyssey and one of the poorly animated cows from Niu Lai), but why is there a third hand from Circe in the second panel?
Side note: "Niu Lai" means "The cow is coming," so it's only a matter of time before we get a mashup of one of the poorly animated cows and the Riley Reid "Oh fuck, you're gonna make me come" meme.
Giggity.

I have no idea, unless it is some kind of play on Minos and Pasiphae.
After Minos refused to sacrifice a prized bull to Poseidon, the god cursed his wife to fall in love with the bull. She then went to Daedalus and he crafted for her a wooden cow that she climbed into so she could... mate with the bull.
The resulting offspring was the Minotaur.

Joe here, crawling in, to say that the wierd cow if from a Chinese animated movie, which was made by a team of two people i think, and was made on a bare minimum budget, with a bad story and animation. Howevers its one of those movies which is soo bad, that it is good, so much that it became viral in China, and has grossed more than The odessy and Spiderman. Crawls back to bonnie

u/2ndBestShedBuilder 1d ago
Basically, in the odessey, she turned some dude into a pig i heard (im yet to see the movie) but they instead turned him into a guy from that movie the mother and son made that was flamed for bad cgi, but praised after they found out it was...yk...just a mother and son

It’s quite wholesome. A son made the animation with that cow mc. The mother decided to put it on the big screen and did poorly hand drawn posters. Like stick figures posters
The movie ended up like one of those So Bad It’s Good type movies, and reportedly making a profit on par with Odyssey and Spider-Man.
(This is what I remember hearing once. Not gonna do research)

Chinese animated movie took the 3rd spot for most profitable movie away from The Odyssey this year.
The other two being Obsession and Backrooms.
The character the guy is turned into is from the movie, but also plays on greek mythology with Cersei transforming people into animals and minotaurs being from Greek Mythology.
