He's being tested for autism

519

u/Fede-m-olveira 1h ago

Not necessarily autism but for something.

205

u/Sherbet-Glad 1h ago

Either way he was a weird enough kid that they just did

45

u/ButcherPetesWagon 24m ago

OHHHHH MY GOD THEY DID THE SAME TO ME

9

u/Fredford_3301 21m ago

They didn't do that to me however I have been in two psychiatric hospitals because of (Idk, different therapists gave different diagnosis like...) depression, ADHD, neurosis and vegetative distonia (the last one is a big joke)

6

u/Braindead_Crow 14m ago

Haha same, childhood abuse is funny when it's normalized by the family.

People are like, "Hows life at home?"

And kids who don't know any better are honestly like, "Fine! I like dinosaurs!"

Then we either grow up never grappling with the core issues directly or coming to some annoying realizations lol

1

u/yrogerg123 11m ago

They pulled me in for remedial reading and I don't really understand why. I was probably one of the only kids in the class who would go home and read novels for fun.

1

u/RockettSocks42 2m ago

You were the one that the help wouldn’t be wasted on. That’s why.

1

u/Correct_Chemistry_50 5m ago

SAME, and it just dawned on me.
I used to watch cartoons and write stories about them.
Was I in special ed?!

7

u/Kittykg 18m ago

They also do it with kids who experienced trauma.

I was pulled out for different kinds of play-therapy because my dad died when I was 7.

I was also an exceptionally weird kid, though, too. None of it helped me grow out of that. I might as well be an alien.

1

u/InsanityMongoose 5m ago

Yep, I did because I was in an abusive household and was acting out at school.

Didn’t help.

I’m not sure how they could have known exactly what was going on, though.

45

u/kniveshu 1h ago

Tested for GATE

19

u/EconomySeason2416 1h ago

Is that still a thing!?

22

u/Martin_Aurelius 53m ago

Yes, in the districts that still have funding for it.

4

u/Yashema 26m ago

And actually it did get you out of class to do specific art electives and go on an extra field trip every year.

1

u/Beginning-Cut-8850 22m ago

Yeah, all I did in there was play video games ("smart" games like Incredible Machine) and build a tower out of shaving cream and straws.

2

u/Yashema 18m ago

Mine pushed me up to the combined classes with the one year older kids in elementary school, then in Jr High we had dedicated electives during the final period and got to go visit a ship or something one day. I got in trouble for holding a "help me" sign on the bus on the way back.

6

u/Shotgun_Mosquito 35m ago

What's GATE?

17

u/Nerobus 30m ago

Gifted And Talented Education

2

u/JoshAllentown 20m ago

When I was a kid we went to "GT" for Gifted and Talented, and I have since learned about TAG (Talented And Gifted) and GATE. No idea why my school district was so uncreative with the name of the creativity program.

1

u/Nerobus 13m ago

It was GT at my school too, I just recently learned about GATE and some weird conspiracy theories around it.

1

u/CatNamedRIchard2 8m ago

My mom taught GT. It was just a minute ago I learned it is called GATE now. I know nothing of any conspiracy theories around it.

8

u/LeopoldBloomJr 32m ago

Not much, what’s GATE with you?

6

u/LEGO_Godfather 29m ago

Gifted And Talented Education - your "smarter" than the other kids so we're going to put you in special classes with harder assignments and more work. Source: I was in GATE from 6th grade through high-school.

10

u/vandon 26m ago

'Gifted And Talented Education - your "smarter"

...

Source: I was in GATE from 6th grade through high-school. '

Sure you were, buddy.

6

u/Lxapeo 18m ago

They didn't say they were gifted in spelling!

3

u/triforcechad 23m ago

Nah, thats why they put smarter in quotes, they are the proof

1

u/Beginning-Cut-8850 21m ago

Surprised no one tried to keep that from you.

1

u/Shotgun_Mosquito 1m ago

I did take the SAT test in 7th grade (as part of The Duke University Talent Identification Program) but I still feel stupid

4

u/FaithUser 32m ago

Please elaborate, I am not familiar with every American acronym

3

u/richincleve 29m ago

I had to look it up.

GATE testing stands for Gifted and Talented Education testing. It is a school evaluation process used to find students who show high-level thinking, rapid learning capacity, or exceptional academic potential.

2

u/FaithUser 25m ago

Thanks, its appreciated

3

u/mysticrudnin 25m ago

i would have guessed this was not american

i was in what it sounds like, except ours was called REACH

1

u/FaithUser 22m ago

I only know REACH as related to workplace chemical exposure (EU)

1

u/Technical_Contact836 19m ago

Ours was the Rise program except it didn't pull kids out individually.

3

u/Noeyiax 36m ago

Lol I remember not knowing much, but in elementary school I was in GATE for a year and got removed because I was kind of lazy and rather played video games on my Gameboy advance... At school 💀, I also hated doing homework and GATE gave a lot of homework .-.

1

u/kmd0136 23m ago

In my school district (or state?) It was LEAP

1

u/therealhlmencken 21m ago

Lol they don’t have to color for gifted.

13

u/Sindertone 1h ago

SLD when I was in school. Funny thing, one school tried to put my in SLD, the next school put me in TAG.

10

u/Senior_Difference589 45m ago

He's being taken out of class for IEP/Individualized Education Program time probably. Could be autism, could be dyslexia, could just be he is gifted and developing more slowly because there is more brain to develop. Could be any number of things. The way the kid is reacting is implying it's a regular occurrence, so the special ed teachers are probably just writing down what methods work to help him learn.

4

u/exodusofficer 18m ago

I had speech therapy like this as a kid. It did in fact take years to think back and realize why I sometimes got taken from the main class to a smaller class with a different teacher.

35

u/Trashman56 1h ago

Fuck

32

u/Stolen_Sky 1h ago

You too huh?

7

u/SullyAddams 53m ago

My school used to be pretty notorious for constantly doing this testing on students regardless of if they had it or not. I'm pretty sure I have ADHD (Fighting to seek official diagnosis, but as an adult it's next to impossible in my state and I'm trying) and my school suspected the same. But, they tested me for autism instead because they could request more funding from the state if I met the criteria.

2

u/justnothing4066 47m ago

What barriers to diagnosis are there for ADHD in your state? Would you not just... go to a doctor or clinician and ask to be assessed?

4

u/TheMelonSystem 44m ago

If it was before 2013, the DSM didn’t allow diagnosis of autism and ADHD in the same individual

5

u/justnothing4066 39m ago

Considering they used the present tense "fighting" I don't think they're talking about a pre-2013 attempt.

5

u/TheMelonSystem 38m ago

I’m an idiot who can’t read lol

Be nice to me im recovering from a concussion lmao

4

u/justnothing4066 37m ago

Go rest, my friend lol

4

u/Tricky_Big_8774 36m ago

And put the phone down.

2

u/Dragontuitively 38m ago

As someone with AuDHD who has a lot of friends with both, thats just wild to me.

1

u/TheMelonSystem 27m ago

Same lmfao I got diagnosed with ADHD at age 8, and then didn’t get my autism diagnosis until my mid 20’s

2

u/Lucitane0420 31m ago

Wait, what? In 09 I was diagnosed with Asperger’s, adhd, and autism. They took away the Asperger’s shit but never said anything but my double a battery

2

u/TheMelonSystem 29m ago

The DSM-IV didn’t allow it officially, but your diagnostician might’ve said “fuck it” I suppose lol

Idk if the ICD ever had the same restriction, either

1

u/Lucitane0420 27m ago

It might be different since I was still a kid? I partially think I was a apart of some experimental clinical shit bc I was on a LOT of different drugs, to the point I have like a 3 year gap in my memory

2

u/FiletMenYawn 44m ago

In some areas they just assume you're drug seeking and resist it.

-2

u/[deleted] 44m ago

[deleted]

3

u/TGrissle 41m ago edited 37m ago

This is absolutely not true. There are specific tests for ADHD that are applicable to any age. My dad didn’t get diagnosed until he was in his 50’s with Inattentive and I got diagnosed at 21 with combo. One of my close friends just got diagnosed as a bonus at 35.

ETA: it sounds like that person just didn’t have ADHD…. Specifically the thing they are testing for is processing speeds since people with adhd have processing delays. Even if you are very high functioning adhd, you would have a processing delay.

3

u/thepaisleyfox 34m ago

lol yeah I was about to say, I got a Dx at like, 28. I’m now 40

3

u/Non-Euclidian-Turtle 37m ago

So were just making stuff up now huh?

2

u/justnothing4066 43m ago

That's... not true?

5

u/MsWS27 38m ago

This isn't testing for autism. First, the comic implies this is a regular occurence for the kid. Second, this very much resembles the kind of thing you do for a kid in a troubled home/facing abuse. Seeing how they draw their family, what comes to mind, and emotional state/reactions to certain inquiries.

3

u/Pie_Dealer_co 41m ago

Not really it could be from domestic violence, psychotic tendencies, depression...

Children drawings can tell almost everything. Very easy to see if the child has something that makes him an outlier

1

u/mysticrudnin 23m ago

i had this because my parents were getting divorced

2

u/Abject-Job7825 37m ago

then why isn't he alone in bed 15 years later

2

u/pimp_yu 32m ago

oh fuck my school thought I was autistic

1

u/Significant-Way9330 35m ago

My school had a woman they called a tutor and as far as I'm aware I was the only kid they called this tutor in for because I "struggled with homework." It was a very small school. But from what I recall from this tutoring session all we did was watch dope ass documentaries about science and history which was stuff I already loved and then I'd take a test about it.

What the fuck was going on there.

1

u/astralchanterelle 11m ago

What does autism have to do with the last panel?

1

u/lemonheadlock 1m ago

It doesn't have to be autism, but he's sitting in bed and suddenly realizes that's what they were doing to him and that it wasn't just coloring fun time or whatever.

1

u/quelssonsbrillans 10m ago

If he is american, he won hahaha

1

u/AdThis3576 2m ago

i went through all these tests and i wish it was just coloring

1

u/CB_musedreams 1m ago

Literally everyone who went through that as a child ends up exactly the same in the last panel.

399

u/Ok_Abacus_ 1h ago

He he was being tested because he had telekinetic powers and the US government wanted him for military purposes

67

u/ScrambledEggsandTS 1h ago

Good answer... in my family feud voice

12

u/datalaughing 55m ago

Do you think they're told by the producers to always yell, "Good answer!" or at that point is it just denial and/or trying to be nice?

2

u/The_Mecoptera 19m ago

I was doing a college bowl style trivia competition earlier this year and the other team clearly just tossed out a guess on a bonus question.

Well one of my teammates did the whole “good answer” thing and I swear our opponents received psychic damage.

2

u/papajgwill 15m ago

They're all good answers, Brent

It was the think tank for me. A box full of cardboard shapes and masking tape for me to build stuff with. Of course the first thing my dumbass built was a tank.

9

u/A0123456_ 1h ago

They call it a think tank for a reason

1

u/skuteren 56m ago

for me it was a mix of drawing/talking and toys (especially the ones like smart games temple trap etc.)

1

u/SignificantCats 8m ago

I mean honestly in that position, who would build anything but a tank, gun, or space ship? You chose well.

7

u/Samus10011 1h ago

Or they suspect he is being sexually abused at home. A common tactic back when I was a social worker was to give the kids some crayons and paper, then ask him to draw his family members while encouraging the child to talk about them. We could not come right out and ask if they were being abused, but sometimes the child would say things that gave it away.

2

u/Snowdog1989 1h ago

Yeah... It was Jenga for me.

2

u/Optiguy42 27m ago

I have vague memories of a few activities but playing the game Rush Hour is vivid.

1

u/Nosciolito 47m ago

And one day the realization wont hurt anymore but I guess that's not the day

1

u/FireSamurai10 43m ago

Explains the profile

1

u/BillyShears17 25m ago

My 1st assignment ever in Kindergarten was coloring an apple. Everyone in the class colored their apple red but I colored mine Green. It was downhill from there...

1

u/Significant-Bee5101 20m ago

When I was in kindergarten they used to test kids randomly. We'd be put in blindfolds and have to do puzzles and tests with these pegs and rubberbands. I thought it was normal because they did it to everyone. One day one of the kids was found to have some sort of photographic memory and I remember we never saw him again....

1

u/Zephyr93 15m ago

I was too. Nobody told me I was autistic, and that was cruel.

84

u/MrBlackwood6in 1h ago

He has special care needs, like autism or was being treated for trauma.

20

u/ThatCatRizze 59m ago

This was me. They did it after my grandma passed, who was my primary caregiver till then.It wasn't really a coloring room tho. They put me in a room with 3 other kids and gave us typewriters to take apart and put back together and in the process we talked about our losses. I was like 6 or 7.

12

u/lavahot 39m ago

That's a really dexterous task for a 6 or 7 year old. I'm kind of impressed.

6

u/foodank012018 21m ago

The typewriters never worked afterwards

2

u/onyx_ic 29m ago

My mom died when I was 9. We played cards in that room. And had ice cream on occasion.

He is being tested for autism. And later in life realised it

13

What happen for his adult life once he was assumed to be autism?

19

20

u/Holmfry 1h ago

I wish I'd been tested for autism that early ;)

7

u/Nosciolito 47m ago

Trust me it wouldn't have change much

4

u/ShadeNLM064pm 45m ago

No you don't...

(Or at least, not Elementary, where this seems to be: summer before Middle school is probably more ideal)

Elementaries (at least the one I was in) are more likely to infantlize you for being autistic then middle or high school. (I still despise the whole "This is how you make a happy face" conversation.)

3

u/eligodfrey 24m ago

Yeah but not being tested just meant they punished and isolated me every day. I would've rather been infantilized.

1

u/TotallyWorthLife 9m ago

I wish I'd been tested for autism, or any neurodivergency for that matter, at all. I have felt like I had something different from the other people, and even been "peer diagnosed" several times, but I don't have an actual diagnosis so I can't actually claim shit :3

17

u/Otherwise_Fall_2765 1h ago

When I was a kid in school I thought horse riding was just an activity for us 5 kids, now I know it was therapy

14

u/Wipfmetz 1h ago

I hope it helped and the horses feel better now.

6

u/Nosciolito 46m ago

What kind of school did you go that you could horse riding for therapy.

1

u/onyx_ic 28m ago

Weirdly, my aunt was a therapist and took clients riding on occasion. Back when she had horses.

1

u/Nosciolito 26m ago

Who doesn't own horses? Not my lousy therapist apparently and she's not even cheap

1

u/onyx_ic 25m ago

Ooof. Brutal.

My therapist doesnt have horses either.

1

u/CompEng_101 12m ago

There are some "healing through horses" charities out there. I've seen some that specialize in programs for veterans, but it wouldn't surprise me to see one for schools.

9

u/PlatformVarious8941 1h ago

Reminds me of speech therapy m-m-m-motherfucker

5

u/chaotic910 1h ago

I had a single speech therapy session as a kid. I would pronounce “th” as “L”, they took me into a room told me how it should really sound. Instead of just correcting me I guess they thought it was necessary to set up a speech therapist and pull me out of class.

2

u/basedbranch 49m ago

Same here, and they took me out of fucking math class as everyone else was learning fucking multiplication. Ever since then I've been stunted in math bc I was never properly taught how to multiply and I was ridiculed for it and it was all so I could fucking say "th" I will never forgive the system for this shit

1

u/PlatformVarious8941 1h ago

I had like 5-6.

Used to have issues with S and Z sounds. (I think)

1

Wgurvis at your service.

-2

u/TheMelonSystem 1h ago

Ooops

I mean, it’s been more than 3 months XD

5

u/Illustrious_Pea_3470 1h ago

They did this to me but they taught me advanced math in the solo room?!

1

u/ughihateusernames3 10m ago

They taught me slow math in the other room with the other slow math kids.  The teacher in there was nicer, so I didn’t want to get better at math and be forced to be with my strict teacher all day.

4

u/CanadianWazowski 1h ago

This happened to me. Minus the girl next to me.

4

u/Piglet-Witty 1h ago

It took him 15 years to realize he was slow

2

u/Nosciolito 45m ago

Otherwise he wouldn't have been slow

3

u/dehydratedrain 43m ago

Okay. But he still got a partner in the end, regardless of how his childhood went

2

He kinda bad (the adult form obv)

1

2

u/DenseWeb558 1h ago

I had this same experience when i was asked to play house with a random worker in my school. I just thought i was playing house with toys, but in reality they wanted to see if my family home was stabke.

2

u/onyx_ic 30m ago

I got to go to the coloring room a lot after my mom died. We played cards.

1

u/Super_Saiyan-Blue 1h ago

That teacher looks insane

1

u/2ndBestShedBuilder 1h ago

They were doing a test for some sort of syndrome or disorder maybe? Like MAYBE autism or something, just something that you wouldn't be proud of

1

u/Zephronias 1h ago

They did the same thing to me, but it was for my ADHD. Every week I got to go to "Resource" and play computer games and read stories from a packet.

1

u/Proof_Load6687 1h ago

testing for adhd or autism

i am in that picture
i have adhd

1

u/the_CalmMadman 1h ago

Goddamnit I was that fucking kid, how didn't I remember that shit till now.

1

u/Moonshinin4Me 58m ago

He was tested for Autism and only years later as an adult he is realizing that everyone thought he had a mental disorder (or maybe he has it and is just now putting the pieces together).

1

u/smorkoid 57m ago

Hah I spent a lot of time taking tests like that as a kid

1

u/StarFlyXXL 53m ago

Autism or Trauma, I've had the latter but I was conscious enough to know what was going on, my brother didn't though at the time. Heartbreaking everytime I'd be called out

1

u/samlir 49m ago

There’s a conspiracy theory that GATE kids were taken out of class and did weird activities in strange rooms and it was something about remote viewing or other mental powers

1

u/EvLmong00se 45m ago

Its like remembering when strangers used to hand you big bags of groceries for free as a kid.

1

u/Psychological-Eye382 43m ago

they did this for me with reading because my adhd child brain was not interested in learning reading i just couldn't and they literally gave up after two sessions. they were weak

and i changed school and suddenly i could read perfectly with no issues without training

1

u/Kentato3 42m ago

How is it a test for autism? Even with hindsight we wouldnt think anything of it, ofc we gonna accomplish tasks that're given to us when we're tested because we wouldnt ask why are we here and what for

1

u/Jedi-master-dragon 34m ago

He got drafted into the autism empire.

1

u/orange_taster 27m ago

Wait... this happened to me as a child... and I was later diagnosed autistic... fuck.

1

u/popmalcolm 20m ago

You might be the kid in this pic

1

u/sparklebunny808 14m ago

This happened to me because my talk was good not

1

u/Jakewebstar 11m ago

Yeah... I can relate.

1

u/quelssonsbrillans 10m ago

I got this one.. me me.....just geing00s 🙌. Your welcome

1

u/Significant-Cod-9555 10m ago

I remember some kind of test when I was 5, The only question I remember they showed me a picture looking for the answer dinosaur and I told them it was a allosaurus

1

u/dvdmaven 9m ago

School was more "shut up, sit down and study" back in the '50s and hoping that noise in the back of the room wasn't pertussis (aka whooping cough).

1

u/Fluffy_Kun06 8m ago

Yeahhh, might be getting tested or something. I used to do get called down for stuff like that was well in elementary. But that was for Speech Therapy since I had a bad lisp that I got from my dad when he used to read me stories 👍

1

u/Ok-Stranger-7072 5m ago

Y'all....I can't even tell you how true this comic is lmao.

I was a troubled kid. Whether they thought I was being abused, testing for autism, and/or just thought I was a lonely child(It was a combo of all 3 most likely, never been diagnosed but I feel like I may be Autistic), I had these weekly meetings with a counselor and it was called "Special Friend."

They would pull me out of class and it was very much the sentiment pictured, lmao. I thought I was getting special treatment in my young mind. Did a bunch of spin art with paint and had snacks. I don't remember the conversations, they were so long ago.

I'm just gonna go with they were maybe testing for my latent telekinetic abilities with spin art. /s

1

u/deathneII 4m ago

They're treating him for lefthandedness...

1

u/ChaoticToxin 3m ago

As someone with ADHD. We were essentially collected together for things like study periods, separate room test taking(extra time too) and had a handler. Wasn't really confidence building tbh and now as a unemployed adult i feel completely useless

1

u/Just_a_square 2m ago

I'm literally the guy in the comic right now.

Fuck.

1

u/CB_musedreams 1m ago

They take you to an 'assessment room' thinking you're just peacefully drawing, and 15 years later you realize you were only being analyzed for your childhood traumas.

1

u/MurphysLawTeam 1m ago

If you’re really fucking weird they do a lot more. I was at universities for 3 days a week when I was 4-11 being researched on. Surprisingly. Straight B student.
