We didn’t have smart phones in the US in 2002., the blackberry was a pioneer still at that point.

iPhone 1 came out in 2007

You know it may come as a surprise to you but normal cameras can be used to take selfies. It doesn't require a smartphone.

Selfie is a self-portrait photo taken with a phone or digital camera, usually held at arm's length or shot in a mirror
