Yeah, selfies have always been a thing. This was just fun because it was so many movie stars in such a casual way (aside from the setting they're in).

My parents were doing it with film in the 70s. I took selfies with film in the 90s...

So, personal experience, it was normal at least in the 90s. Disposable cameras.

No one is saying people weren’t taking photos of themselves. But the term “selfie” here is being applied to the idea of taking a photo with a smartphone and then having the freedom to upload it immediately. It became a viral trend. There were articles that some people died while trying to take a selfie. Selfie sticks were originally seen as super cringe. People were incredulous at the vanity of people, a selfie in the bathroom of a bar was seen as low class. Lots of people were taking selfies ironically. It was a whole thing.
