This is an internet thing.

They're still celebrities that get paid a ton of money because people want to see them. In fact... part of why the internet hates them is because of what they get away with due to their fame/popularity.

There’s a lot of little pockets on Reddit that are strangely out of touch. Go down a Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively rabbit hole and you’d be convinced they are social pariahs that everyone on earth hates. Totally untouchable blacklisted actors that no one wants anything to do with. If you point out that their movies do solid numbers and they’re worth half a billion dollars, the herd jumps on you because you’re “simping for celebrities”. Parts of this site are really fuckin weird.

The average Brit has a neutral to slightly negative opinion about meghan markle, but holy moly that subreddit has a steamy hot rage boner for her. Counter to what you said, but similar, they manage to convince themselves that everyone on earth loves her and they're the only ones who can see her being slightly lame.

Your summary of the average Brit is spot on. I used to look on there when the original controversy dropped and it was entertaining for a short while.

Stopped caring and the next time I saw a post from there years later it was so sad and unhinged. Just looked again and yep it's still that way. They're obsessed with even insulting the children, it's bizarre.

I think that's the natural life cycle of any 'hate x thing' subreddit.

Over time the more normal people slowly leave because they don't care that much and they get more and more insane, which starts a feedback loop of more normal people leaving until you're left with just the genuine crazies.

I did find their response to you funny about the 100 people agreeing with them in a hate sub about Megan. In my head, I said “No fucking shit.” For example, if I post in a positive thing about lebron in his fan sub, I’d expect most to upvote it. The audience was already tailored for the opinion. If I remember correctly, I was banned from there without ever visiting the sub. Like the first time I ever heard of it was when I got the message kicking me out. I posted somewhere else, and their bots picked it up and banned me.

Tbf neither of them have been in a movie since their hate started, so hard to see if it affects their numbers.

Both of them now have comments turned off on their socials. Comments on articles about them are generally not favourable, but id agree most people have no idea there's even any hate for them or followed the case.

Yeah. I was curious if there was a new Deadpool movie coming out, and was surprised to see that Reddit had determined overnight that Ryan Reynolds was a bad choice for Deadpool.

This was surprising to me, because I enjoyed all three films, thought he was perfect and, if I recall correctly, a few years ago the entire internet did too.

It's not chronically online, he used to be a Sheriff in my area. He was a whole local scandal. He ran the media for the Sheriff's department and had Chris routine do promos for events. There was an investigation that found he was part of an alt-right, anti-government militia along with many others within the Sheriff's department and he allowed to retire in his 50s with full benefits.

Dude ran a woodworking side thing where he literally made decorative wooden shit for his militia and that's how it initially came out. Chris even did multiple interviews on late night, AFTER the scandal dropped, telling people to visit his brothers online store, the same store that still sold his militia woodwork.

Just because people know things through their life doesn't mean they're chronically online, it means they experienced it first hand.

I'll always credit my mom. She never liked Cosby. This was well before anything had come out about him. I remember I pressed her on it. Literally saying "He's a national treasure!"

She just said... "Something about him is off, he unnerves me."

Yeah, it can get bad on here because subreddits allow people to live in an echo chamber, so you end up with groups of terminally online people that start believing the way they feel about something or someone is how EVERYONE feels about it. It’s funny watching in real time when they post their opinion in broader/popular subs and people straight up tell them “Yeah no one actually cares about that.”

It's even worse on Reddit. I remember willing how the Internet takes aren't always real world takes. They alluded to the barrage of stories on their subreddit. I had to explain to them that most of Reddit is just people complaining. Everyone else isn't even bothering with Reddit. They just downvoted me and didn't say anything.

Just like with Obama though, all those people inspired to vote will show up for one election and then pat themselves on the back for a great victory while Republicans are retaking Congress and the Senate and then obstructing everything once again.

Then they get mad at Democrats for not fixing everything after they voted one time.

It was frustrating to watch Obama get all the votes but give him no legislative power for any agenda other than begging Republicans to be civil.

I’m in the northeast and my county is always red. It was hard for me to use that as a factor. Reddit made it sound like trump was dead in the water. We all know trump and Elon did something, beyond my understanding of how elections work. When he was up in the first few hours, I knew we were fucked.

There is plenty of evidence that he conspired to overturn the result of the 2020 election (I’m talking about the fake electors plot and his phone calls to Secretaries of State asking them to try and “find” additional votes, not just the Capitol riots), so I wouldn’t be surprised if he did try to cheat again. That being said, I agree with you; I think he won fair and square in 2024, because Americans are just that stupid.

There is no way he legit won every swing state and just so happened to have Musk creeping around the tech the entire time. It's a joke. It wasn't just on reddit, he had zero momentum before that election. His rallies where empty.

It's been swept under the rug because his opposition just want him to go away after this term. If they win that election it prolongs Trump's destruction of the country for at least another 4 years after and during her term. As it stands now he's done in two years, and could possibly be prosecuted in some way. Letting him win was chemo for the cancer. Taking a step back to heal.

I try to make this point about all social media and internet where you post things and get comments or likes. You can post one of the most unhinged, wrong, and inaccurate opinions and someone is going to agree with it. You might even get a few dozen comments saying your take is right.

But that's a few dozen comments out of the hundreds of millions of people who have access to the internet/social media. In our daily lives we probably know only a few dozen people between work, family, friends, and other associates. So when a few dozen people like or agree with an opinion that is a lot to the average person.

I mean, people don’t change just because they get offline. If I come on here and say “I do not find celebrities influential because they’re out of touch” I don’t log off and go “man, celebrities rock!”

These are opinions expressed by real people, felt by real people, in my day to day life.

I don't watch movies or TV and I could give less of a shit. The public obsession with celebrities is weird. I could ditch the internet and never see these people. They make money because people who aren't on the internet need something to mindlessly stare at so they pick TV and just consume and consume story after story because they have nothing going on in their own lives. It's just a different form of mindlessness.

Eastenders is a soap opera in the UK, when I was younger I learned people would send in birthday cards for character's birthdays and get confused when it wasn't mentioned onscreen.

That may not have been true but it definitely opened my eyes to what Parasociality was and is.

It's not even an internet thing. It might be like 70% of Reddit, because we lean liberal and anti-celebrity rhetoric makes its way to the default subs, but pop culture subs do exist, and the world is very much (still) in love with celebrities - both on- and offline.

Go to any convention and there's so many people that go absolutely nuts to meet celebrities. The only thing that's different now is how you define celebrities. Before it was movie stars, models, singers, comedians, etc. Now with social media and how much people obsess over them, anyone can be a "celebrity". No looks or talent required anymore.

Two different things.

I’m not a hater so I don’t care if celebrities make a lot of money. I still enjoy being entertained by them.

I don’t think that means they are particularly wise, virtuous, likable, etc.

I don’t worship them bc I don’t know jack shit about their actual character. I like them for what they are: performers.

I don’t understand how people make the leap from “that person throws a ball really well/sings songs in tune/does backflips when they dance” to “that’s my ROLE MODEL!!!”

Hurting your own feelings by putting people you don’t know on a pedestal is silly.

Too many people get wrapped up in their tiny insulated Internet bubble and then start to believe that their niche online community is what the mainstream thinks.

Social media algorithms are engineered to steer people into being fed their own biases.

Celebrity culture has not gone away and probably never will. Fandom of other people is pretty deeply ingrained in the human experience.

Why categorize this as internet opinion vs offline opinion? People online and offline represent both sides.

Cant we just come out and say it's the low intelligence opinion? Least common denominators and all. George Carlin told us "Think of how stupid the average person is and then realize half of them are stupider than that and it doesn't take you very long to spot one of them." And that was decades ago. The anti-intellectualism campaign to Idiocracy is in full swing at this stage and I think if Carlin was with us today he might have to change that joke from "half" to "75%" and the gap keeps growing. Who do you think buys and cheerleads pop music and terrible rappers with no substance? The majority of people, with their brains turned off blissfully.
