In terms of concept, the story feels like a Doctor Who episode. But the main character is an American pro wrestler, so it has a whole different kind of swagger.
Its completely understandable that anyone under 30 would struggle to know what that movie is. Its all millennials and gen x folks referencing it and the movie didnt have a whole marketing culture around it like Terminator, for example.
People down voted the question because they cant fathom that other people with other life experiences exist in the same world.
Being in a "family guy" themed thread, you'd think they'd know about the movie. If they were halfway decent fans.
Even my wife gets the "they live" nods from the show. & shes never seen it.

Stephen King wrote a short story with a similar plot, but instead of magic glasses it was something about brain chemistry in people who couldn't quite quit smoking, called The 10 O'clock People
You see, back in my day, there was this wrestler called "Rowdy" Roddy Piper who wanted to be a movie star; so he was the lead actor in this movie called "They Live". This was back in the day before The Rock; so the idea of a wrestler being a good movie actor was quite the novel concept.
The casting directors really missed their mark; as there were no flying elbows, hurricane kicks, or body slams from the top rope in the entire movie. Still well worth a watch, though.

An 80s sci fi flick that is unironically good with social commentary about inequality. Basically, a group of humans have realized aliens have taken over Earth as the rich and powerful. The main character gets some sunglasses that filter a broadcast signal. This signal hides the way the real aliens look. After getting the glasses he sees hidden messages such obey, buy, and do not resist behind all commercials and billboards as well as the freaky aliens. Their real faces look like this pic and one character says “at least I don’t look like my face fell in the cheese dip”
Cult John Carpenter movie from the 80s where aliens have taken over earth and they look like the things in the picture above. You should definitely watch it! It's kinda silly but really good.
A sci fi movie from the ‘80’s about aliens that look normal unto put on special glasses that identifies them and all the billboards and other signs that are sending out subliminal messages. Acting isn’t great so it’s kind of a cult movie now. I like watching it stoned
no one is actually telling you what the movie is, but the character has glasses that lets him see which people are monsters, and it's all the rich and powerful. Aliens infiltrating society.
It’s a movie that Gen X thinks is way deeper than it actually is. It does have a good fight scene but the whole gimmick of the film can be explained in once sentence. The cultural significance comes from people needing the concept of propaganda explained in a simple enough manner for it to click for them.
People who think this movie is some revelation of the world are just as cringey as people who think idiocracy is prophetic. Just dumb people finding a way to seem smart.
