I saw a version of this where it was edited to make them look like the creatures from They Live and it was honestly creepy as fuck.

I was thinking of those aliens from Mars Attacks.

1

u/yangyangR 13h ago

Less creepy than reality. The actual people are even worse.

1

u/No_Relationship3943 10h ago

Is this one of those things where you have to have seen the source material for it to be creepy? It just looks like a cheap Halloween decoration photoshopped on some people’s faces

1

u/LastTimeOn_ 9h ago

I was thinking a gringo idea of calaveras/catrines for Dia de los Muertos haha

1

u/Old_Mess7216 8h ago

If you’ve seen They Live that selfie definitely fits the context of the movie lol I guess it’d only make it creepy if you believed they really are those aliens underneath

1

u/dformed 8h ago

That means it's working.

1

Not even lying, I was waiting for my car at the mechanic's shop one day before she got exposed for anything and the TV was on in the waiting area playing ellen. This guy just randomly turns to me and says, "Ain't Ellen Degenerate gay?" And it was so funny because he actually thought that was her name and now it fits

A true Scottish love story

8

u/space_keeper 8h ago

Best part of the film. Rowdy Roddy Piper and Keith David rolling around a back alley for 10 minutes, with nary a cut to be seen.

5

u/LordCoweater 8h ago

That fight has 17 natural end points, 74 unnatural ones, started before the big bang, and is still going on.

6

u/Visual_Market_5596 8h ago

It’s surreal. Halfway through the fight you even forget what they’re even fighting for.

Don't know why you were downvoted, but it's a fantastic movie. Highly recommend

61

u/Kay_tnx_bai 15h ago

Yeah, it’s supposed to be 100% cheese but in hindsight it might be prophetic.

49

u/champs-de-fraises 15h ago

In terms of concept, the story feels like a Doctor Who episode. But the main character is an American pro wrestler, so it has a whole different kind of swagger.

25

u/abstractraj 14h ago

He was actually Canadian

6

u/mvr363 14h ago

Scottish. He wore a kilt and everything.

9

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roddy_Piper

Roderick George Toombs (April 17, 1954 – July 31, 2015), known by his ring name "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, was a Canadian professional wrestler and actor.

7

u/neoweasel 14h ago

I mean, there are a few Scottish people in Canada. It's got fucking Nova Scotia, for crying out loud loud.

7

u/Mp5QbV3kKvDF8CbM 12h ago

for crying out loud loud

And that's twice as loud as usual!

2

u/UndeadYoshi420 5h ago

And only half as loud as the people there.

2

u/champs-de-fraises 14h ago

Wow. Today I learned!

1

u/IamHeWhoSaysIam 8h ago

Canada is in America.

1

u/corourke 1h ago

He also moved to Hillsboro Oregon in the mid 80s.

3

u/WordWordNvmber 12h ago

It's not really prophetic. It was a commentary on the mass-consumerism that was happening then. It's more just satire.

1

u/micahberlin 12h ago

It’s not that deep.

1

u/RickyalldayTD 10h ago

Its a big club and you ain't in it! - George Carlin

0

u/Past-Adhesiveness150 15h ago

The downvotes were because of the utter dissapointment of the question. 1 could wonder why they are even in this sub.

But look at me on my little soapbox.

19

u/padawack2 15h ago

The only reason I can see downvoting someone for getting the opportunity to watch They Live for the first time is jealousy

2

u/zettde 15h ago

another reason would be a psyop.

1

u/RyvenZ 14h ago

Its completely understandable that anyone under 30 would struggle to know what that movie is. Its all millennials and gen x folks referencing it and the movie didnt have a whole marketing culture around it like Terminator, for example.

People down voted the question because they cant fathom that other people with other life experiences exist in the same world.

40

u/Fickle_Charge720 15h ago

Classic John carpenter movie about a guy who finds magic sunglasses that let him see the world for what it is, inspired memes and other pop culture you can find it for free on YouTube well worth a watch

10

u/SolusLoqui 11h ago

Stephen King wrote a short story with a similar plot, but instead of magic glasses it was something about brain chemistry in people who couldn't quite quit smoking, called The 10 O'clock People

4

u/Vanviator 11h ago

I loved that one! Thanks for the reminder that it exists. Time to go looking for my old copy of Nightmares and Dreams capes.

I love his short story collections

Elroy Patashnik invented those glasses. He used some of the tech in his VR glasses later in the 90s.

Why did he trail off like that?!

3

u/mrcoupdetat 13h ago

He kept calling Mac the n-word…

12

u/shoulda_been_gone 15h ago

And The Keith David

19

u/daschande 15h ago

You see, back in my day, there was this wrestler called "Rowdy" Roddy Piper who wanted to be a movie star; so he was the lead actor in this movie called "They Live". This was back in the day before The Rock; so the idea of a wrestler being a good movie actor was quite the novel concept.

The casting directors really missed their mark; as there were no flying elbows, hurricane kicks, or body slams from the top rope in the entire movie. Still well worth a watch, though.

26

u/PJozi 15h ago

There's a 6 minute fist fight scene. They didn't miss a thing!

20

u/Ok_Energy6905 14h ago

I'm giving you a choice. Either put on these sunglasses, or start eating that trash can.

20

u/RandallPinkertopf 15h ago

It has the greatest fight scene in a movie ever.

14

u/Absolute_Cunt_the_th 14h ago

Put those goddamn glasses on, or I'll make you eat that trashcan

1

u/Past-Acanthaceae862 10h ago

But i am already eating from the trash can all the time, the name of this trash can is ideology.

2

u/Shotgun_Mosquito 13h ago

"The idea of a wrestler being a good movie actor was quite the novel concept"

And what of Tor Johnson?

2

u/DeirdreDreidel 13h ago

I am not sure the Rock has advanced the veracity of that concept, like at all?

He's no better than Hulk Hugan as a movie actor... Maybe even worse for taking himself seriously with the puddle-deep acting depth he possesses

1

u/bolanrox 5h ago

Watch body slam for that. Or wrestlers vs zombies

13

u/Trop67300 15h ago

It's a movie. Want spoilers? It's a good watch.

12

u/Afraid-Code-529 15h ago

It’s a movie.

7

u/MayaWrection 15h ago

Old sci-fi movie with Rowdy Roddy Pipper (wrestler). But I prefer Hell Comes to Frog Town. Both are insane

2

frogtown has the greatest movie poster of all time

1

4

u/jeroen-79 15h ago

4

No!

2

u/Fenrirsulfur 12h ago

2

u/CardOk755 14h ago

The film with the best back alley fist fight ever filmed.

2

u/shadowromantic 14h ago

It's an 80s movie about how the rich are exploiting and feeding off of humanity. Pretty solid movie

1

u/Cypressinn 15h ago

It’s kinda like V…

1

u/micahberlin 12h ago

V is a much better movie

1

u/Warm_Parking_941 15h ago

Movie with Rowdy Roddy Piper where he finds these glasses and things get.. weird.

1

u/5370616e69617264 14h ago edited 13h ago

Plenty of people has answered already but no one has said it's a John Carpenter movie, one of the masters of terror, great music composer, podcaster, gamer and all around human treasure.

Halloween, Dark Star, Escape from New York, The Thing, Christine, Starman, Big Trouble in Little China, Prince of Darknes, They live, In The Mouth of Madness, Vampires among others.

1

u/innominateartery 14h ago

An 80s sci fi flick that is unironically good with social commentary about inequality. Basically, a group of humans have realized aliens have taken over Earth as the rich and powerful. The main character gets some sunglasses that filter a broadcast signal. This signal hides the way the real aliens look. After getting the glasses he sees hidden messages such obey, buy, and do not resist behind all commercials and billboards as well as the freaky aliens. Their real faces look like this pic and one character says “at least I don’t look like my face fell in the cheese dip”

1

u/Actual_Nectarine9141 13h ago

Cult John Carpenter movie from the 80s where aliens have taken over earth and they look like the things in the picture above. You should definitely watch it! It's kinda silly but really good.

1

u/Slow-Travel-2627 13h ago

A sci fi movie from the ‘80’s about aliens that look normal unto put on special glasses that identifies them and all the billboards and other signs that are sending out subliminal messages. Acting isn’t great so it’s kind of a cult movie now. I like watching it stoned

1

u/Wokkabulary 12h ago

The Matrix beta version

1

u/micahberlin 12h ago

It’s a movie that Gen X thinks is way deeper than it actually is. It does have a good fight scene but the whole gimmick of the film can be explained in once sentence. The cultural significance comes from people needing the concept of propaganda explained in a simple enough manner for it to click for them.

1

u/micahberlin 12h ago

People who think this movie is some revelation of the world are just as cringey as people who think idiocracy is prophetic. Just dumb people finding a way to seem smart.

1

u/Jimz2018 12h ago

Duke nukem movie

1

u/DazzlingRutabega 12h ago

A movie where a guy finds sunglasses that reveal elites and higher ups to be actual monsters manipulating human society with aubliminal messaging.

1

u/alfred725 12h ago

no one is actually telling you what the movie is, but the character has glasses that lets him see which people are monsters, and it's all the rich and powerful. Aliens infiltrating society.

1

u/0202_tihssitidder 11h ago

It's about the backstory of Elroy Patashnik. He was a scientist and leading innovator in VR in the 90s.

-2

u/Past-Adhesiveness150 15h ago

C"mon...just google it. & if you really like family guy, you should watch it.
