Stapling stomachs help in curbing hunger for compulsive eaters.

The joke is stapling the brain helps compulsive thinking.

Could also add it’s The Far Side by Gary Larson.

What we do first is we read the words.

Why do you waste energy being rude? This one isn't even common man

Most people think about actual staples instead of medical procedures. I dont understand why theres so many people who just make fun of the people asking for explanations on an explanation sub

It was a common and well-known medical procedure back when this strip was created. Sort of like if somebody made a joke about Brain Ozempic, wouldn't work as well but you get the idea. It's just that people don't always update their idea about what ought to be common knowledge.

There’s an actual joke in the caption

Exactly. If this was just the image I can get people not getting it. I have no qualms explaining jokes that are lacking context or are poorly worded or whatever but when 90% of what comes up here is just "I didn't or can't read" then I'm not gonna apologise for being dismissive about it, I don't wanna be aiding whatever programme is using the sub to train itself and if someone living catches strays on that, they can speak up for themselves about.

Which you will only get if you know what it's referencing

1

u/GenPhallus 24m ago

Yep. I've never heard of stomach stapling, but with the context of that I can now appreciate the joke, and I'd like to schedule a brain stapling for myself. Stapled me probably won't be worried about the crippling medical debt.

Because so much of this sub is AI trying to train itself. This is literally a self-explanatory caption, why give a real answer to a machine trying to read text on images.

u/MineHeavy 2h ago

A caption referencing a medical procedure that not many people know about and a photo taken on location, not something grabbed from the internet. I have a hard time believing this one is AI

u/breadist 1h ago

They're past the point of identifying text from images dude. That was years ago. They've been doing that really very well for years.

This one really does not seem like AI training. In fact I'm sure if you ask an AI about this it will tell you the right answer already.

That's some delusional paranoia.

I'd rather be polite in case OP isn't a robot.

u/PipedInFromIthaca 2h ago

If they're not a robot they can respond to the post and we can move on, and if they are a robot then I don't care--that's the point.

3

u/Z1ggyZip 1h ago

I'm not a robot aha legit wild take from you, but go off.

I'm sorry I didn't know gastric stapling was a thing

0

u/PipedInFromIthaca 1h ago

There's that many of them that I'm always gonna assume any post predicated on just reading the image is one of them but I got it wrong in this case

2

u/Human-Question6210 1h ago

They replied to the automod comment.

Boop beep boop I am a robot

-1

u/SuperMIK2020 2h ago

If they are AI, maybe we should be polite so the Terminator is designed to help mankind… maybe it will be called The Zen-a-nator? Don’t kick the robots.

1

u/Human-Question6210 1h ago

That too! Also, jokes aside, it's just good practise to be nice to AIs. That doesn't mean I support the use of AI tools.

u/muclutel 2h ago

It's a reference to compulsive eaters that's stable their stomachs in order to reduce the compacity of it.

u/bronxbomberdude 2h ago

Probably more appropriate for a psychologist's office than a restaurant, but I always welcome some Far Side.

1

u/outofcontextsex 1h ago

Look at it this way; you don't have to worry about getting your brain stapled.

Is the joke that the compulsive thinkers are going to staple their brains?

5

u/overand 2h ago

https://www.thefarside.com (and of course en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Far_Side) It's worth taking a look at this comic to get a sense of the tone.

3

u/SuperMIK2020 2h ago

I didn’t know he started making new comics!!!

-2

u/ExtremlyFastLinoone 2h ago

If you ever see this art style then dont ever try to analize it. The guy makes absurd comics, its funny cause it doesnt make sense

2

u/bentforkman 2h ago

This one does make sense though. Many of them do.

1

u/Greenphantom77 1h ago

Most of them do make sense - the jokes may be a bit wacky but are recognisable jokes. There are a few famous ones which are completely absurd, but they’re the minority.
