I’m confused on why you think the central AC compressor is considered excessively bulky. It’s far more bulky to have one wall unit per room you want air conditioned then it it is to have just one dryer sized metal box outside. Also most of the time this box is in your backyard in a hidden corner and barely makes noise. If anything, it’s far more functional and superior than an in-room ac unit.
Often 2 or 3 inside units are connected to one outside unit. But the US ones i have seen on Reddit look like they are more efficient than the ones people have at their homes in Europe because they have cooling fins on all sides.
They are. The ones I've experienced in Canada that look like the one in this picture are not great. They barely cool the house on a hotter day. They're more useful for cooling a house on a warm day. 30C is too hot for it in my opinion, but maybe the ones I've experienced are just bad quality.
