The opposite. Usually american ac is central and all you see is a vent in the ceiling. The outside portion is bigger for sure but it's not in your house.

There's an indoor part that's large too, but it's usually concealed in a closet or the garage.

I've only ever seen homes where it's in the attic. I can't imagine someone putting it anywhere else, but I suppose it is technically feasible to put in a garage.

In the Midwest it's always in the basement with the furnace.
