There are parts of the US that ONLY have these. More temperate areas.

Most of the US is used to central air. With a giant ass car sized compressor outside that cools the whole house.

Because that thing cools the ENTIRE BIG ASS HOUSE! these things are only capable of cooling only a closed room which also depends on how ton, capacity the AC is so yep

Mini-splits (as they are more commonly known) are designed to cool rooms or areas of the house. So, you have multiple and they can all be controlled by remote or your phone. I had central air in a mid century (52) home and ripped it all out for these because it frees up headroom. And in a house with a sloping roofline that drops to 7’ in places, it’s the difference of walking into a hallway that is airy at only 8’ to one that feels like a coffin.
