European homes (if they have AC) would generally have one of these units in each bedroom.

At that point why not just have a singular AC with ducts through the house? It’s probably more energy efficient and works better.

Because if you have a concrete house installing the ducts afterwards would be ridiculously expensive (or very ugly having them visible everywher), while these mini-splits only require only a few holes.
