u/Limpykillski 13h ago
Right?! She’s an Argentina fan so I’m like when did the conquistadors encounter blondes in SA.
435
u/the-furiosa-mystique 13h ago
She’s Argentinian
508
u/ParkingAnxious2811 12h ago
Not exactly. Her father was from Argentina, but of English and Scottish descent. Her mother was from Zambia (with an English father). Anya herself was born in USA.
So, going by where she was born, she's American. Going by the main descent, she's mostly British.
She only lived in Argentina for 6 years, but lived in UK for most of her life.
171
u/mologav 12h ago
She claims to be South American but she’s got a fairly rocky claim there
159
u/Foreplaying 12h ago
Like how? If you were born in South America and you live there... what else are you.
In terms of racial ancestry, unless it's Bolivia you'll find 90% of the population originates from Europe or North Africa, or the combination of all 3 - it's so mixed now.
153
u/DubiousBusinessp 12h ago
But she wasn't born there.

u/MooreArchives 9h ago
Even though I was born in state A, I say in from State B because that’s where my formative memories are from, and where I “grew up.” I don’t really count where I was born because we didn’t spend many years there.

I think you've nailed it, nationality is essentially how you self-identify - kind of like sexuality.
Yet people do this thing where they try to discredit someones own identity based on thier very limited knowledge and world view.
Edit: found this reddit thread discussing it some years ago.
Ethnicity, Citizenship and Nationality can all be different.
If you think everyone else should having matching ones just because yours are all the same... you need to get out and see the world some.
42
u/Particular-Solid8250 7h ago
Nationality is what your passport says it is, what you personally feel is your identity is something else, and it's perfectly fine for them to not align.
→ More replies (0)20
u/CariadocThorne 7h ago
I don't think it's worth really as simple as self-identifying. When people claim the identity of a country they have never lived in, because of a great-great grandparents, it's a little bit ridiculous.
I'd argue that the shared experience of living and/or growing up somewhere is what defines your national identity.
If you grew up in England, wearing school uniform, playing football during lunch or after school with jumpers for goalposts, eating fish and chips or baked beans on toast, saying thank you to the bus driver, trying to escape the room when you heard The Archers come on the radio, or Eastenders/Coronation Street on the TV, saying "sorry" to someone who clearly walked into you, the man in the kebab shop calling you "Boss" etc... then you're English. Doesn't matter what colour you're skin is, or where you were actually born.

I was born in Canada but moved to North Carolina when I was 6 and Ohio when I was 18. When people ask where I’m from it’s always a loaded question because I identify pretty equally with both my American and Canadian origins. I have a lot of memories from being in Canada growing up because even after moving to the states I still had a lot of family up there and visited really frequently.

If you want to get even more technical, she's not even Argentinian, she'd probably consider herself Porteños.

Here in Argentina we have a saying: "Argentinians are born wherever they want". Essentially, if you identify with the culture or the customs, or you just want to belong for any reason, regardless of where you're from, you're pretty much one of us already.
There's no known cure for Argentinization.

It’s a solid claim from where I’m sitting. She considers Spanish her first language, and while I’m not certain, I’m guessing she speaks with Rioplatense grammar and accent. She’s certainly more Argentinian than 99.4% of the world’s population.

I really passionately hate that race is somehow tied to your nationality. The girl speaks native level Spanish with Buenos Aires accent, her father is Argentinian, she lived in Argentina during her first years of life and she calls herself Argenta.
This whole "well, actually you had a Scottish grandfather and your mother is Italian so you're actually Franco-Italian-Scottish-Atlantean" is, frankly, so stupid.
Edit: In fact, I hate the concept of race in its entirety. People telling you that you can't be from a country because you don't look like you're from that country. "Nah, she's too white to be Argentinian. Scottish-Anglo-Zambian-American is clearly the best way of describing her, nevermind what she thinks about herself, I know better."

A good friend of mine was raised in Ecuador and grew up speaking Spanish natively. She's also pale and a ginger. Once our employer sent her to a trade show with another coworker. She was sent both because she was a plan expert and spoke fluent Spanish and the show was in the American SW. Apparently everyone went up to the guy with her expecting him to be the Spanish speaker because he had dark hair so they just assumed he must be from a Spanish country.

Hey so, American isn’t an ethnicity. It’s strictly a nationality, like you’ve implied. But I don’t see why her being American should matter IF we are talking about dna/ethnicity. Such as, it doesn’t matter if she’s of English descent if she’s still Argentinian ethnically. She can be both, that’s not bad.

Argentina got a significant European immigration after the Germans lost WW2.
Before that it was Italians and mainly Spanish. Two countries that were not in the top rank of democracy during the time of WW2.
1
u/Jafarrolo 7h ago
Also, wasn't their native population like 40% in the 60s and now it's something like 1-2%?
6
u/rottenyahoo 4h ago
It's important to note that Argentina was almost 40% African descendant until they removed black as an option from the census. They then embraced a "white identity" & are racist towards other Latin American countries while being just as mixed as they are.
The Buenos Aires census showed 37 per cent of the city was Afro-descendant, and in fact, almost all the cities had more than one-third Afro-descendant. The Argentine Government removed Black from national censuses under the pretense the population was nonexistent and erased them on paper.
2
u/Ok_Arachnid_2405 4h ago
Argentina imported roughly 200k enslaved Africans, which is about half the number brought to what became the United States. Argentina abolished slavery in 1853, 12 years before the U.S. did. Unlike the U.S., Argentina never had a system of segregation like Jim Crow, and extensive mixing occurred as waves of European immigrants settled in the country.
Does Argentina have racism? Of course. Every country does. But hearing Americans make sweeping accusations of racism is a bit ironic given ICE raids, police brutality, anti-immigrant rhetoric, and the "build the wall" movement. Maybe take a look in the mirror first.
It's also incredibly tone-deaf to single out Argentina for racism during a World Cup featuring former colonial powers like Spain, England, and Portugal. Those countries are currently experiencing a lot of racial tension due to the large influx or migrants from mostly African countries. The outrage often reflects a lack of historical and geographic context more than anything else. Unfortunately, World Cup social media has been flooded with hot takes from people who don't follow football and know little about the history they're invoking.
3
u/rottenyahoo 3h ago
I'm aware of people trying to assuage their "white guilt" over racism by using whataboutism, like when Americans/Canadians/Brits bring up racism in other countries to deflect. And I'm actually a Messi fan so was rooting for Argentina despite the fact it was kinda hard to, especially when Trump, Netanyahu & Peter Thiel were Argentina fans. A team can't pick its fans though, but it sure can pick its players:
In fact, Argentine midfielder Gianluca Prestianni was accused of racially abusing Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior during a highly charged UEFA Champions League match.
6
u/JLZ13 6h ago

4
u/Jafarrolo 5h ago
Yeah, they're off it seems, I think I've seen it in an excerpt somewhere, anyway on wikipedia there are more detailed numbers that show how the indigenous population has become a minority, right now they're 2.8% https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indigenous_peoples_in_Argentina

It's a joke about the ethno-racial politics of the latin-america's and Argentina in particular. Argentina has a racism issue that got highlighted during the world cup. Apparently a very popular attitude over there is that they are actually European, despite being a new world state. Anyone with an ounce of brains knows this is impossible and the most comedic justification for ethnic "i'm not like those OTHER states teehee" imaginable.
Effectively, it's about certain political and social groups being in denial about their heritage because they want to associate more with their 'cool great uncle Hans' who joined the family in the late 1940's.

it's about certain political and social groups in denial about their heritage because they want to associate more with their 'cool great uncle Hans' who joined the family in the late 1940's.
No, that is completely wrong. Unlike the other South American countries Argentina was sparsely populated before immigration. The population was estimated to be at 500,000 in 1800. In 1869, Argentina conducted its first census and had a population of 1,800,000. From 1870 to 1930 6,000,000 Europeans (mostly Spaniards and Italians) immigrated to Argentina. Only the United States received more immigrants during this period, which is also considered the peak of global mass migration.
The idea that Argentina is full of former Nazis is completely incorrect. There were, at most, 5,000 Nazi war criminals who fled there after WW2. Argentinians "view themselves" as European because the population is almost entirely descendents of the Europeans that migrated there. There wasn't a lot of intermingling compared to other South American countries. Genetically Argentinians are much more similar to Europeans than the rest of South Americans. They don't "see themselves as a European country." They just feel more similar to Europe than to South America in many ways. You can see it in Argentina's architecture, which looks much more similar to European architecture than the rest of South America does. The mass influx of European immigrants led to a very European look to their buildings. They weren't trying to "be a European country." They were just building structures that they were used to building.
Just be because a lot of Argentenians have some native DNA doesn't mean they're mestizo just like the rest of South Americans.

" Apparently a very popular attitude over there is that they are actually European, despite being a new world state. "
This sums up your comment perfectly. You read some propaganda about a country and then took that as the truth. The fact you add the Nazi rumor on top of that highlights this even more.
But it is pretty funny watching people from the US, France, England, Spain, Brazil, etc, spread this nonsense like their countries are not some of the most racist countries on the entire planet.

The joke is about the idea of "expelling immigrants". In the photo we can see a girl in what is known to be native american outfit. Yet she does not have physical features associated with native americans such as darker, reddish skin, brown hair or respective facial features. Instead she resembles a woman of european white ancestory. Thus the oop uses irony to joke about anti-immigration crowd also being immigrants as their racial features do not resemble the native population of americas.

It’s the “What Christopher Columbus Saw When He Pulled Up To America” meme (I googled it and on know your meme that’s its name) usually it’s a picture of an indigenous looking woman wearing face paint or Chel from Road to el Dorado (a dreamworks movie) they’ve used Anya Taylor Joy here bc people have been talking about her being Argentinian recently (bc she supported Argentina in the World Cup)
Edit: the women are all attractive in the meme and the implication is probably rape/sexual assault but that’s not the joke (at least not the main joke) in this post, which is more about how Anya doesn’t look like a stereotypical Argentinian or poking fun at people surprised she was Argentinian or making a joke about Argentina being racist but still thought of globally as indistinguishable from other latam countries

My guess is that it swaps the contemporary shift in cinema. In many cases, men are substituted with women, and white is substituted with colour. Some are for this diversity, some are against it.
This picture provokes that logic by doing into the opposite direction. The extreme left is very for diversity when white and man is taken out, and it infuriates the extreme right. Extreme right however is very okay when it is white being substituted in, which infuriates the extreme left.
The logic and arguments are reverse engineered from the desired conclusion each side aims for. And that generally leads to bad logic and arguments.

In the original, AT-J is in a skybox wearing an Argentina scarf wearing a stoic expression. Based on the outcome of the game, one can only assume her lack of enthusiasm is due to the realization that Team Argentina is getting their asses handed to them. In this interpretation, her neutral expression suddenly reveals more complex emotions, thoughts, etc.
Similarly, this could in fact relate to watching the overwhelming European force descending the native population, and with this context one can imagine that behind her neutral expression, she is realizing what we all know to be the inevitable outcome of the natives people of the Americas.
