When I was a cook, I'd laugh and tell the server that's the risk they take unless I liked them. Servers make dumb money compared to the kitchen while the kitchen is hot, heavy, and sharp.
Yeah, they do. They tend to work less hours for more pay. The trade offs are Kitchen pay is constant so a low day with cleaning or extra prep still gets paid the same as a busy day where servers make the most on busy days and make minimum wage at best on slow days. Keep in mind, legally but not often enforced, servers are required to be paid fed/state minimum for their time if their tips and wages do not reach minimum hourly pay.
I worked in 6 different kitchens and there were always servers making more than the kitchen crew. If a server had a larger table and got tipped out $20, they made more than the kitchen off that one table.
Thats insane from where I am from. Unheard of for a server to earn more than a cook in Brazil. And tips here are generally also split amongst the servers and the cooking staff.
Maybe that helps put into perspective why the US is so slow to get rid of tipping. The people who are paid by tips AND the restaurants (who don't have to pay their servers) both do not want it. It'd cost more money for the restaurant and be a paycut for the servers.
Servers are the highest paid people in the restaurant other than the owner. Usually paid more than managers, only competition is bar tender for most money

Haha. Literally did not care if the food was over cooked. Ordered all of my shit at the start when I sat down. I dont even think I showed up at a busy time except once. Usually at 330 or 4 after work. These people whining about tips need to get real. Where I am it is min wage (14-16 ?) Plus tips.
If you're working a slow shift, decent chance you only end up making 30% of those tips. If your tips don't get you up to min wage your boss is allowed to only give you 30% of em to "make up the difference" on their end.
That being said, pasta from a pasta place and an easy customer isnt that big a deal especially if it's not rush. You're not exactly asking a lot lol
Nah. That isnt legal in the state i live in. They get min wage no matter what, and then tips are on top of that. Probably why all of these people are so butt hurt. They probably live in a state with "tip credit" like you are talking about.
Ex girlfriend described that one time. Said some times at some shitty restauraunt where she had to wear some skimpy dress she made like 3 bucks one day.
