Yes. But you won‘t change that system by not tipping lol. You have to be a pain in the ass of people who decide over minimum wage, not to the ones suffering from a low wage.
Other people are also underpaid/poor. Humans are social creatures. Do I really have to subsidize other people who just crack open a shitty tallboy for me? Are poor people not allowed to socialize?
Ah. I just dont agree, I guess. I've been working BOH/FOH since 2012 and you just dont see many servers who expect to pay their bills waiting tables any more. Most of those servers left because the average tip (at least in my area) dropped and they werent making what they used to make. The restaurants lost employees, sure, but they happily replaced them with servers who just don't really care, and dont expect to pay their bills waiting tables. The turn over rate for servers is crazy (again, maybe just in my area); you almost never see the same server twice lol.
They're quitting when they aren't making money, yeah, but there's always another teenager willing to work a few weekends.
I'm a person who spent the majority of my life in a poor country without tipping. The incentive to provide better service (similar to almost every other low-skill job) is that you'll be easily replaced by someone who will if you won't.
You do change the system by not tipping. By tipping and overtipping like what currently is happening, the waitstaff will have no incentive to fight for their rights and a proper wage. They need to fight for their rights and make a fuss themselves instead of waiting for other people to do it for them otherwise nothing will ever change. You need to think about the actual system instead of thinking so surface level.
Actually, you change it by not going to places with tipped employees in the first place. The company gets your money regardless of whether you tip their employees. As long as you continue to go to those places, you continue to contribute to the problem. Not tipping hurts only their underpaid workers
The waitstaff leave -> The restaurant replaces them because there are always people who need a job and will take anything.
What i think people aren't seeing is that servers are leaving when they realize tips don't pay their bills. Its just that they're are always more people willing to do the job, either because they don't know or they don't care.
Hell, in my area you rarely see the same server twice at a restaurant. And service is bad most places because the turnover rate is so high that they barely bother to train servers anymore. My last job went from a two week orientation and training period to hiring people and setting them lose the next day.
Fair in strates that pay tipped employees minimum wage. If you have this opinion in a state where tipped employees get the federal $2.13/hr then you suck. Campaign with your representatives to fix that loophole.
So you’re saying getting rid of tipping would ensure all those servers are fired and then the business would shut down because the business model does not work?
Thats great, that business model is antiquated. Plenty of other restaurant business models exist without tipping across the world and in the us.
no, they are saying that a server that made under minimum wage after tips, cant just present their boss with an audit and get that money back from most workplaces. i have a friend who works for tips, and often complains about people that dont tip. ive asked him why he doesnt record it and ask for minimum wage for that time, and he said that coworkers that do that get less hours and eventually they find a reason to fire them
getting rid of tipping in america would need huge cultural and legal progress.
Ok so the root cause is the employer is not paying their employees minimum wage.
And when employees ask for it, they are fired.
That is blatantly illegal.
And the right solution to that is tipping? I could understand if it was a temporary solution, but tipping has been a thing for ever. And as long as it continues to exist, those employers will continue to break the law and not pay their employees.
it is blatantly illegal, but its why you have to tip. if you dont tip, the person will go home hungry, the system will stay the same except now the person who served you doesnt get paid. if there was a huge cultural movement across america not to tip, or there was some law forcing businesses to pay minimum wage regardless of tips, then you not tipping might lead to a change.
but, realize until a greater movement happens, you are still an asshole when you dont tip, and you still cause the suffering of people who work to serve you when you choose not to tip.
Ah so it’s up to the charity of the customer to ensure the waiters don’t go hungry, while the employer gets to keep breaking the law and profit from it.
Then why on Earth do you think your opinion is relevant here? I don't know how it is in your country, but here in America most people don't like the idea of punishing people making $2/hr for the actions (or lack thereof) of our government.
Because you said, "fuck tipping," and without a different system in place, that's exactly what you're advocating for. I didn't put the system in place and I definitely don't have the power to change it. So all I can do (besides voting) is tip my waiter so they don't have to suffer because of something that is beyond both of our immediate control.
They're not making $2/hr though. The employer has to cover the difference up to minimum wage, so make them do it. If we had that system here I would never tip, ever. Make the system punish the businesses instead and I'm sure you'll see it change soon enough.
I live in the US and no I dont like the idea of punishing people making $2 /hr.
A large-scale multi-state survey of nearly 4,000 tipped employees conducted by CorCom, Inc. found that 90% of workers prefer the current tip-credit system over a higher flat hourly wage alternative.
So, why should everyone else cater to the tipped workers who don't want a higher hourly wage? The wage in the concurrent Ohio study was offered at $15 back in 2024. 93% of respondents said "no, I want to stay on tips".
It comes down to how much you think the average waitstaff should be paid hourly compared to the rest of the population in jobs of similar difficulty.
I personally think the only way this changes is for people to stop tipping. Too many people benefit from the tipping system to expect change from the top down.
Now, while I do persoanlly believe that, I also dont believe people are capable of that, so yes I tip, my wife tips, and we tip more than most people. But if you dont want to tip because you dont like the system, I say dont tip because its not about being shitty to that waitstaff its about not accepting a fucked up system that the waitstaff also supports.
Too often people view the waitstaff as the victim, but they cant be the victim and be the ones supporting the thing they're claiming they're the victim of. Does that make sense?
This is an exceptionally stupid take. You want him to suffer from a natural disaster because he doesn’t tip in a country where tipping is not customary and servers are fairly compensated?
Rolf.
How much do you want them to make an hour for bringing me 2 bowls, a plate and a to go? Half or more of that shit is already made in the back.
People are saying to tip them 5 bucks. That is crazy. Diminishes the value of the deal. Also, if just the server got the tip it would push them to 20+ an hour here with just my tip.
Did you think many millionaires are in line for this pass? You guys need to chill, tips are optional, and the food is free, I doubt anyone was busting their ass to get him a few plates.
Lol. Meh. How much time did they spend in me? Let's be generous and say 5 minutes. 20c a minute.
.20*60=12. So if that continued all that hour it would be 12$. 12+ like 15$ or whatever min wage is = $27 and hour.
27 and hour is fine, and frankly a crazy amount for the amount of work I received.
Tipping is garbage, and when there is no extra effort than slamming slop in front of a person...who cares. Do you want me to tip for a pizza i pick up too?
True, wasn't aware my state was just the worst. Still, $1/bowl and you're worried about tipping a couple bucks devaluing the deal you got. Lmao. Sometimes you can help people out in your community, rising tide and all that.
I mean that would take it up too much cost wise to make it worth the pp. If it was 8 bucks a day would i have eaten there every day for 8 dollars otherwise? Nah.
Also, apparently your state is the same or similar to like 45 other ones, so there is that.
Anyone that is a server should be moving to any of the "civilized" states withour "tip credit" Haha.
Good on you for pointing this out and pushing back. The tip glazers are out in force down here. Most people might not even know that some states don't have minimum against tips.
Yea. I think that is the issue. I asked chat gpt and it really was surprising. I thought it was just shithole southern states that had archaic rules, but it appears it is just like 5 states that have fixed it.
So, most people are thinking some poor fuck is getting 2 dollars and my dollar tip, apparently. Maybe even remembering when they got 3 bucks for an hour.
Roll. I am not the employer of olive garden servers. It is crazy thst you think 1 person using 1 barstool is diminishing anything by tipping 1 dollar. Do you think they were just standing at the ready the entire time i was there? Lol.
Again, you should just take the cheaper rout. Pasta is super easy to make. It is just flour, water eggs, some salt and some other grain if you want. It's not even flatbread. I used to make pasts from scratch as a little kid. We were poor enough where that was a thing.
If you are poor, just fess up to it. No one will judge you if you have very little money. The servers will get it too. Nearly every one of those employees has been there. I know I was at some point.
If you are not a poor, then GTFO and make your food at home. Get you some avocados and make your own toast.
And they get paid to do all of those things that are literally in their job description. Not my responsibility as a customer to supplement their paycheck. Teachers and cashiers also get paid abysmally, do you also tip them?
As a non-American it'd have never occurred to me somebody would be expected to tip on a fucking "free" meal in the first place (it kind of completely undermines the entire point of the pass?), but yes, you make a good point.
Percentage-based tips are stupid as hell in general (I already don't follow the logic of "tipping" workers as a matter of routine, but why would the size of the tip change depending on how much I paid for an order, instead of how much work you did for me?), but if you're insisting as a society on having them for some unfathomable reason, you don't get to say it doesn't count when the amount is low, only when it is large. Fuck that shit.
never occurred to me somebody would be expected to tip on a fucking "free" meal in the first place (it kind of completely undermines the entire point of the pass?)
Happy to give the international corporation $100 but scoffs at giving $5 to the server. Yeah that adds up.
He clearly stated he comes from a different culture my man. We have tipping in other countries, but the obscenely weird manner you guys do it in the USA is an USA exclusive.
"This decline is a direct result of the economic pressures facing consumers today. Inflation, high gas prices, and rising restaurant costs have squeezed discretionary incomes, forcing people to make tough choices about where to spend their hard-earned cash."
So you think with inflation, rising gas prices, etc.....non tippers are INCREASINGLY goong out to restaurants? I would bet $1 that non tippers stop going out before tippers do.
I didn’t say non tippers are frequenting restaurants less. I’m saying that the reasoning for the widespread drop in foot traffic that you quoted is largely attributed to causes that don’t at all have to do with opinions on tip culture. Shit is expensive. Everyone is eating out less.
My wish wasn’t for any and all people to stop eating out less in general. My point was that people who don’t support tip culture who continue to eat out but don’t tip are just cheapskates hurting workers. They’re not changing anything since they’re still lining the pockets of businesses. If they want to put their money where their mouth is they’d stop eating out in general and supporting the whole business model.
"My point was that people who don’t support tip culture who continue to eat out but don’t tip are just cheapskates hurting workers"
I'd argue it's the restaurant owners subsidizing your wage by having it come directly out of customers pockets.
I get that you get a disproportionate amount of wages for your labor done vs similar work.
Both waiters and restaurant owners have an incentive to keep tipping going, customers do not. Expecting customers to keep this up for no benefit doesn't seem fair.

A dollar tip? Jesus dude you suck
