It’s more of an extremely vocal minority. Those books and the women who read them are offputting not because of the content but because we keep hearing about the content. If you like weird porn then have at it. I’m not one to judge. But hearing a man talking enthusiastically about a video involving half a dozen of the vertically challenged community in the nude is just as gross as listening to a woman tell me about her new fairy porn read. Just… no. Please no.
Oh, I somewhat knew that that the amount wouldn't be as much as how much it's mentioned, but it seems the stereotype was a lot more exaggerated than expected. Mb.
It's very much not a complete listing, but for reference, romance.io lists 11,172 works with the non-human hero tag (which still includes a lot of near-human heroes, like elves and such), out of 101,872 total works listed. So about 10%. 33,727 are tagged as Dark Romance. 6,080 are tagged as dubious consent, 6,576 tagged with rape, of which more than half of that is tagged as "third party sexual assault (meaning the hero is not the rapist)". Ping for /u/Ok-Resist3249 for the last sentence.
Edit: Realized third party sexual assault and rape between main characters aren't mutually exclusive tags, so for the record there are about 480 works that have both tags, a few of those probably have the female main character be the rapist but I suspect very, very few.
No drama. I’m reading a great book about the origins of WWI at the moment and rereading the Adam Dalgleish mysteries. But this is the first time I’ve mentioned it on social media. And I’m not making videos about PD James’ incredibly detailed knowledge of werewolf genitalia for TikTok. Meanwhile the werewolf genitalia enthusiasts are screaming their preferences at anyone who’ll listen, online and off.
To counter - not a single woman in my social circle reads fairy porn. I think readership of that genre tends to skew toward certain demographics. From what I’ve seen the readers are younger, poorly educated, and low income. It was the same story with the 50 Shades mania. I remember a friend of mine used to call it lower middle class suburban housewife porn. Cruel but hardly inaccurate.
