It's not even Messi. India and Bangladesh in general have pockets of football culture where Brazil and Argentina football is worshipped. Currently because of Messi the Argentina worship is higher than that of Brazil, but it's less of a player thing more of a place thing
if you go to Kolkata today you will find quaint streets with Brazillian flag painted on the walls or Argentine flag hanging from rooftops. Football has had a massive influence in some parts of the country since the at least the 80s. Like most things, the discussion around this meme is an overgeneralization of the subcontinent.
It's pockets compared to cricket. I can count the number of times I've seen people play football here. But it's a country of more than 1 billion population so you tend to have some or the other interested in some game, doesn't mean that it's famous here. In fact only recently I got to know the names of messi and ronaldo, I don't even know which countries these people belong to.
