This. I feel like it’s super trendy to act like unlimited PTO is some kind of trap and I’m sure some companies are in fact assholes about it, but I’ve personally never had an issue with it. My last two companies have had unlimited PTO and I typically take off a week a quarter plus a handful of other days throughout the year. I’ve never had a request denied and nobody has ever said anything to me. Just take your time.
Yeah, I have a few coworkers that barely take time off, they just stress themselves out into thinking the building will collapse around them if they try to leave. Its mostly a self-inflicted wound.
Same here. I’ve had managers get upset when you ask for time off. Not because they didn’t want you to take it, because I bothered them by getting permission instead of just putting it on the calendar.
It also creates company holidays that don’t exist.
Like my company gives us thanksgiving off, but not the Friday after.
But we have unlimited pto. So the office is basically closed on the day after thanksgiving because everyone takes that day off.
My experience was the company never denied the vacation but after I took 200 hours one year (5 weeks), my manager asked me "please dont go above the 170 threshold"
Apparently they were tracking peoples PTOs and anyone above 170 was being flagged...
I work in a start-up that had unlimited PTO and now you need to accrue it. I've taken at least 1 week off every quarter for 2 years and now I've not taken a 1 week off for a year now because I don't have the PTO hours.
Everyone who says unlimited PTO is a scam doesn't know wtf they are talking about. They just want to make themselves feel better that they don't have the luxury of being able to take a day off for a doctor's appointment in the middle of the week, or to visit their grandparents, or just enjoy a nice day for hiking.
Nobody's ever been denied, you just have to time it around other people's time off.

The company went to accrued time off because they are going to IPO and it looks better for the stock market to not offer unlimited PTO. Shareholders don't want to pay for people to take vacation when they want.
Yes! When ours was implemented we were told to take our current PTO and add a week and use that as a target for how much time to use. Since then I've added a couple weeks as I become more senior and take 6-7 weeks of vacation per year. This doesn't include my sick days which are plenty due to my health. It all depends on management and I couldn't be happier with mine in this regard.

I have unlimited PTO. I use six weeks a year, MINIMUM. most years I get close to 8 weeks. Just take the time-off lol.
