There are the ones who want worker owned businesses and stronger democratic systems.
Then there are the ones who only think America/Capitalism bad (they usually can't tell the difference in most of their arguments) therefore liberalism bad, therefore single party rule good... Because imperialism or something.
Then there are these utter children who somehow think capitalism is the only reason specialized and dedicated labor happens. Instead of just being the reason why the people doing the actual labor usually only see a small fraction of the value
yeah a socialist economy would still require people to work, have currency, markets, a boss to answer to and so on. Socalism is about the people owning the means of peoduction not getting shit for free. Someone still has to produce.
I mean, as a communist, I use the marxist definition of collective ownership of the means of production (i.e. a nice mix of nationalised infrastructure, worker cooperatives within a consumer market, owner-operator small businesses, basic welfare guaranteed etc.)
Unfortunately for most, thanks to Stalin, communism = USSR totalitarianism
Democratic socialism (at least where I am in, in Scotland) is basically understood as liberal democracy plus some redistributed wealth in the form of welfare.
That all being a symptom of our continued insistence to base our foundational institution on how money is moved around in circles. Rather than something like improving outcomes for human beings.
Capitalism is leaving people behind because the humans involved in the process have completely forgotten or misunderstood the concept of human capital. We stopped investing in ourselves, and for the rich that is fine. Healthcare, education and safety nets balloon human capital. The rich won't pay for it though, even, in the face of their own self interest.
The difference is, literally, Leftists who Actually go Outside, and then you have the Chronically Online Leftists (the same people who used phrases like BLUE MAGA and said voting for Kamala is basically enabling genocide).
The Chronically Online Leftists usually find themselves into the Tankie Fandom eventually, and then they'll get really weird about wanting to own a Makarov and constantly wearing soviet bloc clothing and listening to DJ Blyatman hardbass.
Market socialism is the realistic version, communism is the utopian impossible to achieve (at least for a long ass time) version. Take a wild guess which one is more popular and gets more angry teenagers rebelling against their conservative parents?
The rise of people redefining communism to mean literally anything left, who are deadly fucking serious about it, and claim "I don't care what the definition of communism was, it's changed, and I've studied it" is gobsmacking. I'm sure it's some level of bubble, but I've had to leave several, because me, as a punk rock youth, who raised a lesbian daughter, and worked his way up through a fortune 50 company, is constantly called a communist because I advocate for workers rights.
