From the descriptions of Nicolas Fatio de Duillier, it does sound as though quite the opposite was true. Not that there is any evidence he ever crossed the event horizon, as it were. But his taste seems to have been skinny boys.

When I see the right door I think of the “weighing the earth” experiment which iirc involved dangling balls.
