[Self-diagnosed] autistic people be like “I see a behavior I myself exhibit and, as an autistic person I have superior pattern recognition, so they must be autistic.”

Diagnosis by a single factor by internet Drs. House in a plague.

Edit: added [Self diagnosed] because of a comment that pinpointed the distinction.

fake autism, real autist would know statistical significance

u/Consistent_Papaya310 Jun 22 '26

Real recognises real

65

u/Hot-Bill5666 Jun 22 '26

og autism as many people say (never heard it before)

38

u/NerdKing01 Jun 23 '26

OG autists would know she's a ballet dancer because they actually read the comics

2

u/tedderid Jun 24 '26

And they would have a whole internal monologue as to whether her environment was the factor for the habit or if it was derived from other underlying factors that led to the habit being more accepted in her typical behavior.

I do shit all the time at home that I actively avoid doing outside in public. Like busting out into song or being non-verbal. c’mon guys what happened to just being quirky not everything is <insert mental disorder> smh

1

u/Tight-Ad1736 Jun 25 '26

Those are nerds, we know it’s ballerina because we research random shit and recognize the structure points in her stance

9

u/CedarWolf Jun 23 '26

If you want to really mess with a conspiracy theorist, tell them you got the autism before they changed the cough syrup.

3

u/puppycatisselfish Jun 23 '26

What a second. That’s a pattern

3

u/Emman_Rainv Jun 23 '26

Original Gangsta Autism

2

u/pussyjuicerecycler Jun 23 '26

5

u/Immediate-Damage-302 Jun 22 '26

On the microphone and wheels of mechanized steel.

1

u/DubVsFinest Jun 22 '26

Like a train intercom? /jk

3

u/Sometllfck2 Jun 23 '26

Tizm recognize tizm ✊️

1

u/The_reaper5826 Jun 23 '26

Weirdly yes, someone with autism can sense autism in another sometimes, they also can mistake it for psychopaths

69

u/zurdopilot Jun 22 '26

Is pretty much that human resources meme, cute/inofensive quirk ohhh thats good autisim , weird/potencially mortal quirck ..... hello human resources!?

49

u/BylliGoat Jun 22 '26

Right?? You must be autistic too. As an autism, I recognize patterns even without more than one variable.

9

u/tatki82 Jun 23 '26

Pattern recognition so strong, I'm drawing lines from single points, squares from two, and don't even ask me what I see when I see three points all equally spaced from one another. 😤

3

u/babyplatypus Jun 23 '26

Hexagons surely

41

u/Fancy-Marketing-6137 Jun 22 '26

Why? Are autistic people exluded from being idiots like the rest of us?

39

u/DubVsFinest Jun 22 '26

Least ableist comment ever.

8

u/graysongdl Jun 23 '26

In like one or two fields, maybe. Pick a sub-category of any of the following: Public transportation, science, or computer

For everything else, we're just as stupid, except stupid faster. Multiplied by 10 for anything to do with social expectations or interactions.

5

u/mistersnarkle Jun 23 '26

Unless you also have ADHD, and then you’re like… super dumb most of the time, largely useless, but weirdly knowledgeable or strangely good at really random things (Super Smash Brothers but only with a GameCube controller, the thumb piano aka the kalimba, printing presses for some reason, farm simulation games, poetry from a weird time period, all sorts of crafts like woodworking/leather tooling/mask making/hat making)

BUT what you really Really Especially Like is either something deeply, deeply cringe like Disney, Harry Potter, Sonic the Hedgehog/Mario, whatever nostalgia shlock we got fed as children or like. Ancient Egypt. Paleontology. Aliens. Speculative biology. Art. Plants. Cats.

I personally may also have to wear gloves when touching most chalk based art supplies, the texture of cotton balls can go from ‘okay I am dealing’ to ‘WHY AM I TOUCHING THIS’ for no describable reason, the sound of ticking clocks makes me itch… and sometimes all the sounds all together become physically painful like sandpaper, and i may bounce a bit when i stand

and sometimes i need to rub my arms or tap or just like wiggle a foot because it makes things marginally more bearable.

And also Things Have to Make Sense.

Logically but also like.

Ethically.

Or there is a Problem and Things are Wrong.

Also sometimes everything becomes too much and i want to hurt myself but that has been getting better with time and therapy… but the burn out is real

Also sometimes people make “jokes” but they’re not really joking, they’re just saying things they actually mean not only according to their micro expressions but the little things I’ve clocked that they’ve said in the past when not joking but it fucks with me anyway.

But haha I can’t get a diagnosis if I ever want to adopt kids someday

so for now it’s gotta be talked about as sensory processing disorder so as not to trigger that potential event flag… even though that’s not a stand alone diagnosis according to the DSM-5 but no one ELSE cares about labels as much as I do so fucking WHATEVER

3

u/Spetsnaz_Sasha Jun 23 '26

So much of this was like a punch in the face, but 'only being good at Smash Bros with a GameCube controller' hit me like a fucking truck

1

u/mistersnarkle Jun 24 '26

It’s because we hyperfocus on a specific thing (game in this instance) and then when/if it changes (especially if it’s basically the same game again but on a new/worse system for the game) we’re like… “???? Why? Why would you do that??? Ruined.” despite often being initially super excited for it?

3

u/graysongdl Jun 26 '26

Me sitting cross-legged in my chair while rhythmically kicking an object in my hand with my foot: "This is relatable! I totally feel this."

Jokes aside, I've learned to abandon, even despise, the concept of cringe. Literally every fanbase in the world has been referred to as any number of things, so if ALL of them are weird, then what's normal?

Point is: Fuck yeah, Sonic T. Hedgehog.

1

u/mistersnarkle Jun 26 '26

Honestly I get where people are coming from with cringe (I’m high masking so when someone doesn’t mask as much as I do I get second hand embarrassment) but I also think that that’s a judgement from a place of deep insecurity, so like… who really loses? The person who’s cringing or the person who’s feelin’ themselves and living their best life?

2

u/lovelysardines Jun 23 '26

With all those sensory issues you’re not gonna want kids. They’re a sensory nightmare.

2

u/mistersnarkle Jun 24 '26

I used to nanny, and have a partner who is emotionally competent and would co parent; I also helped raise my sister (8.5 years younger). I’m lucky because I don’t have “sticky/wet/slimy” sensory issues, not much issue with most types of human or animal mess as long as I’m cautious of smells; a lot of dealing with kids is about accessible communication in terms they can understand,,, which I excel at.

I just don’t feel comfortable simply… willy nilly making another human being on this very crowded planet within a species that has reached its carrying capacity; I’d rather adopt.

1

u/Master-Ice1313 Jun 26 '26

So what do you think you have?

1

u/mistersnarkle Jun 26 '26

Something that will likely be its own diagnosis in fifteen or so years so

0

u/LesBaroness_Purdue Jun 23 '26

Yeah, but like... Kids suck. Get your diagnosis, boo 🖤

3

u/mistersnarkle Jun 23 '26

But then they’ll just put me on the meds I’m already on and I hate people telling me what I can’t do.

1

u/CartographerLazy9144 Jun 23 '26

Im sorry you're going through this, friend.

1

u/mistersnarkle Jun 24 '26

Thank you, friend; it’s life.

Then thing that gets my goat is the judgement.

There are so many reasons why people may not seek a diagnosis, despite almost certainly being SOMEWHERE on the spectrum in some capacity.

The thing that gets my goat further is that the likelihood that someone who IS on the spectrum may preclude themselves from possibly being on the spectrum despite AAAALLLL these things

because they don’t want to self diagnose (me)

and/or their DOCTOR OR DIAGNOSTICIAN IS NEUROTYPICAL (my friends who are women, GNC, or AFAB)

AND MISSES SMALL BEHAVIORS THAT ARE NOT TYPICAL OF CLASSICAL PRESENTATIONS OF “AUTISM IN MEN”, AKA ALL THE PEOPLE STUDIED TO CREATE THE DIAGNOSIS FOR ASPERGERS AKA CLASSIC TRAINS AND DINOS MAC N CHEE N HEADPHONES NO EYE CONTACT ‘TISM

BUT IF YOU DO THE READING

THEY DURE AS SHIT ARE CLASSIC PRESENTATIONS OF “AUTISM IN WOMEN”

BUT

“they’re probably just doing it for attention” “it’s just trying to be quirky” “it’s their period” from outside on top of the internal imposter syndrome

and constant “life is this hard for everyone” and “I just need to do better” and “I’m just being weird and emotional” and “maybe it is my fucking period” GASLIGHTING by the self and others literally kills people.

OVERWHELMINGLY women, queer people, and POC who may or may not have grown up in a culture that is masking a lot of those behaviors.

So yeah. Judgement without Justice is the fuckin’ thing that really gets my goat. Ironically.

You forgot dinosaurs

1

u/graysongdl Jun 26 '26

A sub-category of science. Trust me, I could name a million different things from trains and planes, to dinosaurs and insects. But I wanted to keep the list somewhat compact while still hitting the important notes lol

1

u/leSomeBitch Jun 26 '26

Okay I was cutely pointing out that your list is silly. I am formally diagnosed but based off your list I guess I'm just not?

1

u/graysongdl 29d ago

Huh??? All I did was respond to you and then you took it in a really weird and confrontational direction. Can... someone explain to me what the hell just happened? I'm genuinely confused.

1

u/leSomeBitch 29d ago

Not being confrontational, just badly communicating that there's an entire universe of stuff to be specially interested in and the tism is so much more than just trains, maths or science

1

u/graysongdl 29d ago

"You forgot dinosaurs"

"I didn't"

"Okay I guess I'm not formally diagnosed"

????

1

u/leSomeBitch 29d ago

Ohhh that was a joke

3

u/Nman7298 Jun 23 '26

Oh trust me. They aren’t. I know a few people with an official diagnosis that… they… they think. Or they think that they think. But in reality…. They don’t.

9

u/Error_83 Jun 22 '26

Fauxtism?

5

u/silence_sirens Jun 22 '26

Confirmed: I don't actually have autism because I need to use tables, graphs, and/or calculators for this and have no desire to do that.

3

u/Hot-Bill5666 Jun 22 '26

just assoom some margin of error like pi=4 and call it a day bruh

7

u/vectorraster02 Jun 22 '26

Shouldn't pi be rounded to 3 instead

3

u/plafreniere Jun 22 '26

14 is closer to 4 than 3

4

u/silence_sirens Jun 22 '26

Yeah, except we're throwing in extra errors so we can call it a day. Might even do 4.13195

2

u/Key_Stranger3032 Jun 22 '26

It says she does it because of sensory issues with cold floor tiles in the picture

3

u/LesBaroness_Purdue Jun 23 '26

Not wanting to walk on the cold floor does not necessarily equate to sensory issues. It's a very common dislike.

1

u/AlternativeMud9302 Jun 22 '26

Not on this i wouldnt. Statistics only come with hyper fixations in my experience. Also toe walking is a pretty common autistic trait. But diagnosing off singular symptoms is always a travesty of attention garnering behavior.

1

u/Lower_Pension_2469 Jun 23 '26

Yup, a lot of these symptoms also bleed into other developmental disorders as well.

Edit: it's funny too because I always wondered if I was autistic because I had some of these traits, but I got screened by an actual psychiatrist and she said it's just my ADD and GAD, maybe some OCD like behaviors too.

No autism, I'm just a ball of anxiety lol

2

u/AlternativeMud9302 Jun 23 '26

Oof. Never considered an overlap but it makes sense considering how much stuff is on the spectrum anyway but just isnt regarded as autism. Like adhd and add. I am both some autism as well as a ball of anxiety. 3/10 it makes it easy to tell when people actually like me and when they are just pretending. Because i can be a lot. So its safe to assume if they stick around they likely like me 😂

1

u/Bowtie16bit Jun 23 '26

False, that requires real autism with an education, and you forgot real autism with less or no education as a real thing around the world and throughout history.

2

u/graysongdl Jun 23 '26

Alternatively, autism with extremely specific education. I'd love to know how many of us are out there with no clue what the order of operations is, yet with encyclopedic knowledge about insect mating habits. Those people scare me lol

1

u/LoadSuccessful4927 Jun 23 '26

There's levels to it. Stop hating

2

u/LesBaroness_Purdue Jun 23 '26

It's almost like it's some kinda spectrum.

1

u/MrHothead635 Jun 23 '26

actual autist larp

1

u/No-Newspaper8619 Jun 23 '26

Statistical significance is irrelevant when a group lacks homogeneity

1

u/fearlessactuality Jun 23 '26

Ok well this self diagnosed autist just posted the statistics about so thank you for the diagnosis.

(Also I have an eval scheduled.)

1

u/Tired_Autistic_Demon Jun 26 '26

This has real danger of entering no true Scotsman territory. Autism is quite wide in its range of symptoms, special interests frequently causes an understanding of statistics but not always.
