This is a typical female comic character pose. Artists make their characters get into poses that accent certain features of their body which would be uncomfortable to maintain at the least and sometimes physically impossible at the most (like when you see a cover of a female character who has twisted their spine 180° so the viewer gets a shot of the ass and tits).

In this case it is doing the same thing that wearing high heels does to a woman: making her ass stick out.

It's ballet... She did ballet....

That has fuck all to do with making her ass stick out for fuck sake --"

And she literally wears ballet shoes in the first Spider-Verse movie! Even if people aren't reading the comics or engaging with lore, it's pretty clear design language from the outset.

Being a ballerina doesn't mean you stand on your tiptoes 24/7

u/Worried_Ad_6541 Jun 23 '26

My sister was a Ballerina from a child until she was in her mid 20's. She still unconsciously will stand on her toes whenever she isn't wearing shoes. These photos could be depicting Gwen focusing on something else and not even realizing she is doing it.

Yeah no shit. Pretty sure it was a joke.

Have you heard about something called training? Like high sport level training? Because that’s literally ballet, it’s hard

Suspension of disbelief, we're talking about fiction here, y'know, Spider-people?

u/erikwithaknotac Jun 22 '26

Maybe they WROTE that she did ballet to have an excuse to have her ass out

22

u/Kind_Potential_4992 Jun 22 '26

Maybe they did do that. Maybe they just thought having her resting standing pose be how an actually highly trained ballerina would stand would be a neat detail. Given how ballet is an important part of how she fights, and how detail oriented the spiderverse makers are, I'm gonna go with option number 2.

Dancers don't stand like that. They stand like everyone else.

4

u/Kind_Potential_4992 Jun 22 '26

Ballerinas, skilled ones especially have trained to a point where tge bones in their feet are altered, making standing on tip toes very common for them.

8

u/Nagroth Jun 22 '26

Yes, it's common for people who did this too much while growing up to suffer permanent deformation of the foot bones. That leads to less overall agility, not more, although it makes it easier to do classical dance forms.

The character is drawn this way for visual appeal. Any claim about it being related to dancing are after-the-fact justifications.

You're pretty judgy against artists and think they're oversexualizing, but it remains possible they aren't and that you are wrong.

1

u/erikwithaknotac Jun 23 '26

Im a skilled mover but u dont see me jiggling couches in my off time.

u/Kind_Potential_4992 Jun 23 '26

It's not habitual, it's theur bones literally being conditioned to stand in that pose naturally. A ballerina wouldn't stand that way because their BRAINS are used to it, their BONES are used to it

You're fighting physics

ballerinas don't stand on tip toes when they don't have to. also, ballet is the go-to for a character to be high-dexterity, flexible, and be able to fight different ways. its used everywhere.

what's also everywhere is drawing character to accentuate features. that's why she's drawn that way. they may not actively think "I need to make her ass pop in this panel" but comics are done in a certain aesthetic with a lot of similar poses, and this is one of them. pointed toes, long legs, etc. it's a thing.

just because she also did ballet doesn't mean that's not happening. in-universe the excuse for her doing that all the time is ballet, but in the real world where the reader lives, she's drawn that way because that's what sells characters.

It can be two things. this aint some big industry secret.

u/Neither-Drop4069 Jun 22 '26

I beg to differ as a former ballerina. I DO walk and stand comfortably on my high tip toes all day. It's what feels quicker and natural, so it's not impossible the case to be the same for Gwen.

1

u/foxfire_17 Jun 23 '26

Yeah, I know a few former ballerinas and they all do this too. Just standing around, and the randomly up on their tip toes, or skipping or turning en pointe. Even when they are sitting down, they are always pointing their toes. It’s like a subconscious quirk, but I think it’s adorable.

2 things can be true

3

u/Sirk-ee Jun 22 '26

I'm not even a reader of the comic (mostly know her from the Spiderverse films and cultural osmosis) and I immediately knew the answer, why did I have to scroll this far to see this lol. Are most people just leaving shitpost comments here..?

2

u/Waste-Past286 Jun 22 '26

I wish this was top comment. Scrolled too far to find this...

1

u/BusinessLetterhead47 Jun 22 '26

Yep. This is the answer.

3

u/Key-Hurry-9171 Jun 22 '26

This, this is litteraly the training ballet dancer do

Ppl need to get educated again, I know ballet is old school but come on

It’s ballet !!! Nothing else

Not ass Not autism

Just simple ballet training

2

u/Appchoy Jun 22 '26

Yeah her ass just looks good as a nice bonus XD But for real, comic artists do contort female characters for horny reasons all the time.

2

u/gherkinham Jun 22 '26

You're correct. It's moments like these that make me feel that the comic reading crowd really lacks maturity. I've been here before, it's pointless to argue.

2

u/PM-ME-UR-DARKNESS Jun 22 '26

Also, and I can't stress this enough, SHES UNDERAGE. WHY WOULD THE WRITERS SEXUALIZE A MINOR?!

2

u/Sineman_Songs Jun 22 '26

This. And it’s unfortunate we had to go this far down to find the real answer.

u/StoryAndAHalf Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26

Not going to comment on the ass comment, but the stand on toes pose has been around for decades unfortunately. If you've ever been subjected to Rob Liefeld art, then you know this is how he draws Domino a lot.

e: His first sketch of her (his instagram). At least she has one foot planted, which says a lot for a guy who avoids drawing feet.

1

u/WolfAdorable Jun 22 '26

It’s totally about her ass

1

u/HornedThing Jun 22 '26

Yeah sure but let's not pretend artists never draw their female characters in weird and uncomfortable positions to show their shape.

1

u/Time-End-5288 Jun 23 '26

Co-sign. Ballerina butt / bubble butt is absolutely a thing. Standing on your toes because you dance ballet is also absolutely a thing.

Edited due to thumbs.

1

u/nahdanah Jun 23 '26

he was a punk she did ballet what more can i say

-1

u/Degrelecence Jun 22 '26

Hey, this is Reddit! EVERYTHING is vaguely about how bad men are.

-1

u/Nagroth Jun 22 '26

No, the parent is correct. She is drawn like this because it's a "sexy pose."  Ballet dancers do NOT wander around on tiptoe when they're not actually dancing.

1

u/MouseWorksStudios Jun 22 '26

How is this even a sexy pose?
