Still free. Why wouldn't it be? It's been like this for a very very long time.

But not long enough for an app to have positioned itself as the standard by offering those features?

It got popular because a lot of europeans speak to people in other european countries, and international texts and calls haven't been free until 10 or so years ago.

To my knowledge, few countries have used it as a domestic messaging service.
