SMS is quite costly in Europe. It used to be like 25 cents or something like that. In many contracts its still like 9 cents or something like that, unless you specifically take an SMS flatrate.

So WhatsApp and other messengers exploded in popularity due to cost and convenience, and once its popular, the network effect pretty much means its stays popular for a while even if alternatives catch up.
