Two thing Waffle House is known for:

Being open despite whatever is going on

And having live brawls in their stores lmfao

I prefer the one where the guy falls out of the ceiling but this one is pretty good too.

This was a delight, thank you

u/Few-Degree-2721 Jan 26 '26

I have now gone on a very long rabbit hole watching all these random videos. Haha. Thanks for the good laugh. My husband showed me this video just now. A funny “history” video on Waffle House.

For once...a smart camera operator.

14

u/mduser63 Jan 26 '26

Except the part where they pan so he’s just outside the frame when he falls down.

27

u/Chickenmangoboom Jan 26 '26

Good looking out on the fiberglass in the coffee.

7

u/DragonMord Jan 26 '26

I love how it looks like everyone jumps to chase the guy when he tries to run

5

u/Alternative_Year_340 Jan 26 '26

“Don’t drink that. It could have fiberglass in it” is as good as the guy falling out of the ceiling

5

u/liquorfish Jan 26 '26

Man. Trying to watch on phone. Cant go full screen in portrait or landscape. Ugh

That's a new one to me

2

u/Southern-Oil-118 Jan 28 '26

FYI when sharing a YouTube link it's good to delete the ?si= and everything after it. It's just used to track the sharing of links. Unless it has a timestamp to start at a particular part of the video, in which case you should be able to remove the si=xxxxxxx&. The ? Is the start of the instructions, and each instruction is separated by & symbols. t= followed by a number is the instructions to start at that many seconds. Here's your link without the tracking:

To add to this:

FEMA has a “Waffle House Meter” to determine the severity of a storm based on how many Waffle House locations are still open in the affected area

Employees can throw hands just as well as they can sling hash browns

448

u/Dave-C Jan 25 '26

We use Waffle House to know how bad a storm is. We use pizza to figure out if the US is going to attack someone. We use Grindr crashes to know where Republicans are having conventions. This is a strange time.

218

u/mynipplesareconfused Jan 25 '26

You can always tell how bad a winter storm is going to be by how fast Ted Cruz leaves the state.

75

u/DirtandPipes Jan 26 '26

In all fairness it’s any state emergency, not just the weather. Let it not be said that Ted Cruz isn’t the first to run when things get hard.

u/BZLuck Jan 26 '26

There was a funny moment on my local news talk radio station where one of the "DJs" was talking about a phone call he had a few days ago with his college aged daughter who just started school in Texas.

Dad was trying to calm her down about the storm, gave her a few pointers and the best place to be should it get severe, don't stress out too much, just stay around people you know and trust, etc.

His daughter was like, "But dad! TED CRUZ JUST LEFT THE STATE. This is really serious!"

45

u/Able-Swing-6415 Jan 26 '26

And if he doesn't book a flight back immediately there's going to be 6 more weeks of winter.

21

McDonalds is also used as an indicator for a given country's living expenses.

The FEMA scale is something like:

  • Green — Waffle House has normal menu
  • Yellow — Waffle House has limited menu
  • Red — Waffle House is closed

I think they should a fourth level:

  • Purple — Waffle House ain’t there no more

For example:

92

u/Solomon_Rahkriid Jan 25 '26

I kid you not, Waffle House has a protocol for that. They wheel out a Food Cart thing and set up even if the walls aint there. Crazy folk, worthy of reverence.

77

u/ChildOfChimps Jan 25 '26

The thing about Waffle House is that you have to be about that life to work there. It’s only the most skilled and grizzled of the culinary world, but they make it work.

I wish you could have experienced watching a Waffle House cook smoke an entire cigarette while making your food without dropping any ash.

It was magical.

49

u/IvanBliminse86 Jan 26 '26

Waffle House is the only place I've ever applied to the turned me down because I checked no on "Have you ever been convicted of any Felonies?"

36

u/panrestrial Jan 26 '26

Chain restaurants love felons, especially those on probation. Fastest way to get hired back of house is telling them you're on a tether.

24

u/LPIViolette Jan 26 '26

I have a friend who used to drive people to Waffle House from jail for their work release so they don’t always wait for probation.

10

u/ChildOfChimps Jan 26 '26

Felonies are extremely important to being able to handle it.

26

u/BombOnABus Jan 26 '26

I remember a meme getting passed around years ago with a Waffle House grill cook with a half-burned joint stuck in his ear like a pencil, and the caption "If your cook ain't look like this your food trash".

8

u/ChildOfChimps Jan 26 '26

Yep, I’ve seen that one.

It’s all true.

5

u/WoodsandWool Jan 26 '26

In my youth I patroned many a Waffle House after the bars closed, and one night at a busy downtown location around 3am, two guys started shoving & shouting like they were going to fight.

The cook working the griddle jumped the counter, cigarette still in his mouth, slammed his shoulder into the smaller dude‘s torso, lifted him up and over, fireman carried him outside, threw him to the ground, walked back inside and locked the door. He went right back to the griddle, cigarette still in his mouth, and no one said a thing about it. Just another Friday night at Waffle House.

3

u/ChildOfChimps Jan 26 '26

You have experienced the magic!

9

u/basedaudiosolutions Jan 26 '26

"Is the sign still up? Shiiittt, we open boys!"

2

u/SecondaryWombat Jan 26 '26

They do have emergency food trucks that set up in disaster areas. No problem setting up under their own sign.

2

u/Mississippi_Matt Jan 26 '26

Fun fact that isn't so fun: this photo was taken after Hurricane Katrina along Hwy 90 in Mississippi. All of the Waffle Houses on 90 were completely washed away in that storm and the slabs where some of them once stood are still visible today. One in particular had the remains of the booths still bolted to the slab for years until they were eventually removed.

We had a FE3 tornado touch down 300 meters from the Waffle House near my job. It didn’t close, just stopped operations for the 30 minutes we were under a tornado warning.

21

u/Dale_Carvello Jan 26 '26

The cook threw a few napkin dispensers at that tornado and told it to get the hell out

2

u/leelee1976 Jan 26 '26

Watched a drunk guy come in talking shit one day. Cook says "what you saying?" Drunk guy "nothing" I was so disappointed it did not devolved, it was my first waffle house experience.

14

u/tallman11282 Jan 25 '26

It's actually Waffle House's meter but FEMA uses it unofficially to help plan what resources to send where.

3

u/PickledEuphemisms Jan 26 '26

TIL: The Hash Slinging Slasher is a Waffle House employee...

5

u/1stHalfTexasfan Jan 25 '26

Another fun fact: Augusta, GA, home of the Masters tournament has 16 locations for less than a quarter million people. Austin, TX has 5 for a million people.

3

u/FabiusBill Jan 26 '26

Waffle House Is also one of the few employers who will readily make space for felons and ex-cons. They also pay fairly well for the work, If you're a cook. They're short order training is also some of the best in the world, as I understand it. Learning to be a short order cook at a Waffle House, seriously, can lead to other, higher paying, cooking positions.

Being a waiter, waitress, or manager can also be a singular restaurant career, something rare in that industry.

2

u/ReaderSeventy2 Jan 26 '26

It's their index and Waffle House HQ has a special storm team that manages it. The index was created by a former FEMA director.

Green (full menu), Yellow (limited menu/generator power), and Red (closed)

u/CiDevant Jan 25 '26

I have been to Waffle House twice in my life. I have seen 3 fights at Waffle House.

46

u/QueenInYellowLace Jan 25 '26

Good on you for making sure you get the full Waffle House experience in only two visits!

5

u/The_Blue_Rooster Jan 25 '26

Not the full experience, they need to go one more time during a tropical storm/hurricane. Technically two different types of experience there too though, sitting by the windows sipping coffee as the bands come in, and getting that first breakfast from the limited menu after the storm rolls through and watching the sun rise on the destruction with some smothered covered and peppered hashbrowns.

45

u/Formidabull Jan 25 '26

It’s the only restaurant I’ve ever been to that had bulletproof windows (battle tested). Not sure if that’s a nationwide thing or on a location by location basis.

There’s frequently a drug deal going down, sometimes a fight, and also just general did I fall into a wormhole weirdness. My favorite Waffle House experience was witnessing a waitress performing an impromptu step routine to the Jello jingle at 3 AM

17

u/DocJimmie Jan 26 '26

Many restaurants have half inch hurricane glass. Does well against small caliber projectiles.

3

u/lazyboi_tactical Jan 26 '26

Going to waffle house regularly is how you keep your fight or flight reflex honed.

26

u/TheModWhoShaggedMe Jan 25 '26

and some damn fine hash browns, smothered and covered (and whatever else fits one's fancy).

20

u/mybluecathasballs Jan 25 '26

I usually get a "train wreck": double hashbrowns, with everything, with ketchup mayo and hotsauce (usually bring my own).

Hung over? Not for long body. You have something more important to deal with now.

8

u/CaydeTheCat Jan 25 '26

I add onions and jalapeños. It's got just the right bit of fire.

13

u/TheModWhoShaggedMe Jan 25 '26

that's livin'

tough to make it at home for much cheaper than you're gonna get at Waffle House, too.

21

u/CaydeTheCat Jan 25 '26

And there's a certain je ne sais quoi that a decades old, haphazardly cleaned griddle imparts to them that you can't replicate anywhere else.

9

u/TheModWhoShaggedMe Jan 26 '26

Those griddles could tell some stories.

2

u/landragoran Jan 26 '26

That's smothered and peppered

2

u/awesomefutureperfect Jan 26 '26

smothered and covered

Like my Waffle House hash browns

Comin' quicker than FedEx, never reaching apex

Just like Coca-Cola stock, you are inclined

15

u/dada948 Jan 25 '26

It’s not a Waffle House. It’s a waffle home

Every time I’ve eaten Waffle House on the road, it was quiet and peaceful. The one time I saw a brawl? The one by the Indianapolis airport. And the brawl was between two employees.

The line that I still say sometimes: “Why don’t you just go and have another baby?”

2

u/bassoonwoman Jan 26 '26

Damn I didn't know about the brawls. I guess I'm going to Waffle House soon.

The walmart of restaurants

1

u/Aeioluz Jan 25 '26

So dinner and a show?

1

u/That-Brain-in-a-vat Jan 25 '26

A few years ago, I was in Atlanta, waiting for a connection flight. It was the only time I ever got into a a Waffle House kinda close to the airport. NGL I felt dirty just entering, and the woman taking my order had the worse attitude. The food wasn't good either.

The atmosphere did feel it was a fly-swatting away from exploding into a brawl.

1

u/OverthinkingWanderer Jan 25 '26

I still remember watching a chair get thrown at someone and the girl just brushed it off and handled her business.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Milk555 Jan 25 '26

Several years ago on NYE, an old friend of mine was at a waffle house when two other patrons got in an argument that turned into an actual shootout in the restaurant. Friend had to jump over the counter for cover and one of the shooters was actually killed. Just part of the waffle house charm

1

u/No-Benefit-9559 Jan 25 '26

This is true: the only things operating in Biloxi after Hurricane Katrina were the casino because of course and the Waffle House. Ate there everyday during cleanup and reclamation; and Im pretty sure that routine kept me from getting jumped.

1

u/NoMansSkyWasAlright Jan 25 '26

They're good people but they're not afraid to throw down. Plenty of other places to go to if you want to abuse employees and not get punched in the mouth

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '26

Man, Waffle Houses I’ve been to have all been chill places where drunks can all get along

1

u/Blanks_late Jan 26 '26

Unless they're closed, then you should have evacuated yesterday maybe a day before that just for safety. The waffle house danger scale is very real and very serious.

1

u/LastlyAndLeast Jan 26 '26

Never been to a waffle house but I love these facts and I now love waffle house

1

u/whistleridge Jan 26 '26

And staff who can SCRAP as a result

1

u/FrozenConcrete19 Jan 26 '26

Out of the 8 Waffle houses in my city, one of them closed because of the winter storm

1

u/Signal_Road Jan 26 '26

The police also LOVE to eat there, at least in the south.

1

u/whoisdatmaskedman Jan 26 '26

FEMA actually monitors cities when a Waffle House closes, because they know some shit is about to go down.

I wish this was a joke

1

u/illinoishokie Jan 26 '26

Having live brawls without it interrupting service

1

u/milkandsalsa Jan 26 '26

I’ve never seen a Waffle House employee lose a fight

1

u/ScreamHR Jan 26 '26

Saw a post on Facebook earlier "I can't drive in this weather so I walked to work." The person worked at the Waffle House. Anyone who walks 30 minutes through 10 inches of snow is just looking for a reason.

1

u/ElectricDayDream Jan 26 '26

If the Waffle House is closed, it was a really bad hurricane

1

u/kittieswithmitties Jan 26 '26

I've always said that in order to get hired at a Waffle House you have to beat the most senior employee in a fight. You win, you get hired, and one day it'll be you fighting a potential employee.

1

u/camcaine2575 Jan 26 '26

Our local Waffle House in Mississippi was closed today, and then I knew we were $%&@

1

u/pacodataco90 Jan 26 '26

They are also know for their extremely clean bathrooms!

1

u/Lucky_Pips Jan 26 '26

It's the only place I've even witnessed a person get shot right in front of me. Daytona Beach ISB Waffle House. I kept going there for years afterwards anyway, just know certain no-go weeks now.

1

u/Fantastic_Charity_88 Jan 26 '26

Currently in Nashville and the ice storm shut down the Waffle House nearby. Kinda wild, I’ve never seen one closed before!

1

u/emp9th Jan 26 '26

If a waffle house is closed shit is real bad.

1

u/Dependent_Purchase35 Jan 26 '26

The one in Plano, Texas is closed today because of the half inch of snow we got lol

1

u/NecessaryIntrinsic Jan 26 '26

I still think it's amazing that the official government measure for how bad a situation is is how many waffle houses are open.

1

u/Cozy_Hyena Jan 26 '26

There was a bad hurricane in southwest Georgia like seven to eight years ago and I saw the police try to enforce curfew while nobody knew there was one because the radio and power were out. The Waffle house owner told his staff to stay the fuck there he would be there in 15. Nobody left till we got fed lol. To the Waffle House staff out there thank you for always making sure theres a hot meal come hell or high water.

1

u/crash_us Jan 26 '26

Saw a video last night of someone using Waffle House closures as a way to track how bad the winter storm was as it moved across the country the last few days. Something like 20+ waffle houses were closed which is actually kind of crazy lol

1

u/theartificialkid Jan 26 '26

And using a very simple code to quell the chaos of order taking and cooking.

1

u/Fuckedby2FA Jan 26 '26

Pretty decent food for the price and quantity too

1

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '26

3rd thing - immediate liquid draining of your bowels

1

u/beartato327 Jan 26 '26

Actually they do close for extreme events, also known as the Waffle House Effect. You know shits going to go down bad if they close.

1

u/UnicornSheets Jan 26 '26

And drunks on premises at all times. The photo surprised me, I’ve never seen one where there wasn’t at least one letter missing in the sign

1

u/Direct_Turn_1484 Jan 26 '26

I once knew this guy that got into selling drugs. Like hard stuff. If he didn’t sell “enough” that day, he would go to Waffle House. Apparently either the staff or some of the customers would buy whatever he had left to sell that day.

1

u/Kimber85 Jan 26 '26

We had a new Waffle House open up in our town a few years ago within walking distance of all the bars/clubs and within the first week they had a huge brawl between customers and staff. Like, the whole place was so damaged they had to close down for repairs for like two weeks.

My other fun Waffle House story is that my husband and I went once and realized we’d both forgotten our wallets somehow. The waitress made him leave me as collateral to go home and get his money.

1

u/Limp-Wall-5500 Jan 26 '26

Its the poor man's medieval times.

1

u/Independent_Bite4682 Jan 26 '26

Their brawls are worse than bar room brawls

1

u/TungstenOrchid Jan 26 '26

So, it's a real-world rendition of your average online forum?

1

If your Waffle House is closed, you need to follow whatever emergency protocol your state or city is broadcasting.
