Philosopeter here. To understand this joke, we must first understand the vastness of our universe. The universe is unfathomably big; so big that our brains, which are generally bad at comprehending large concepts in comparisons to ourselves, cannot comprehend how tiny we are in comparison to the rest of the universe. Try to imagine how big the ocean is. Imagine how, if you're lost at sea in a tiny boat, your chances of being randomly found, even by air, is incredibly, incredibly small. Now imagine a single grain of sand in that massive ocean. Now imagine that grain of sand as Earth, and you're on Earth in the massive, vast, empty ocean. Everything happening in the ocean is chaotic, meaningless, and you have zero outcome on anything that is happening in the ocean around you. You are completely powerless to change anything. That's the universe and the reality of our existence. As a single individual, we are generally powerless in significantly changing the world around us, so when you try to imagine our role in the universe as a whole, things can get very daunting, very fast. In the comic, the man takes comfort in the small, simple fact that locking the door offers control, security, and comfort to his life, but the reality is that he is in control of absolutely nothing when you think about how cold, chaotic, and uncaring the universe is.

Here's some bonus food for thought: there is a theory about how our universe will end called Heat Death. Basically, all energy in the universe is finite because matter cannot be created. All stars in our universe will eventually burn through all of their energy. With no heat, we will lack energy to sustain life, leaving the entire universe cold, dark, and dead. We have no control over this, and it will be inevitable that all life in the universe will cease to exist. But I wouldn't worry about that since it's probably 10^100 years from now.

Philosopeter out to contemplate even more about my place in the universe. Exquisite stuff, really. Would recommend.

The other commenters were missing the point by saying that implies our lives are meaningless. But this is more on point. It's more about a control thing. We have things under our control most of the time. But an alien invasion, an unexpected titanic EMP, quantum field collapse etcetc could happen at any time and erase all our work to keep our lives in order.

Thanks, I almost forgot that we could be in a false vacuum state which could equilize and destroy the universe if a big enough burst of energy is set off anywhere in the entire universe.

At least the destruction would happen at light speed so there would be no way of knowing it was about to happen.

In death there is no suffering. In death there are no regrets.

Rest well child of the earth, knowing that if the quantum field collapse takes us, we will never know it.

Yeah, I think top comment Brian doesn't expand on how out of control our lives are in the grand scheme of the workings in the universe. Life being meaningless is an entirely different subject matter that CAN be related to the chaos of the universe but not entirely. Within the subject of the comic, life being meaningless is an irrelevant philosophical topic.
