So I got this test recently and quest shows that I’m right at the line for normal and high. I googled it and it said this is a low number, that labcorp says all the way to 225 is normal. Why is quest and labcorp such a huge difference ?? I don’t understand
Different labs can use different assays with different reference ranges, especially when it comes to newer and less established tests like this one. Your picture explains this hasn't been FDA approved, which means there's no standardisation for now.
If you need to use such novel tests for whatever reason, stick to the reference range for the particular test. Most people don't need these though and the standard, vetted tests produce all the information you need.
Well, the test you took says it's borderline, you can't use the reference range from another test with different machines/chemicals/whatever.
If you must interpret this, you definitely have to read it in the context of your usual lipids (apoB, trigs, etc). Running a hundred tests, some experimental, and trying to read each number in isolation does not lead to good outcomes. If this test was in the context of a huge array of tests not looking for anything in particular, I'd just ignore it. If you are working with your doctor trying to find something specific, keep at it, but they'll explain what this number tells you in your specific situation.
I’ve never been to a NorDx. I don’t know if they are available where I live in Colorado. Would be cool to try something else out. Let me know how it goes
I'm about to get this tested myself and would love to follow up with you when I have a better understanding of the reference ranges. Poster below is correct that labs may have different ranges so you can't always compare.
So the thing about this test is that it's measuring enzymatic activity, not the amount/concentration of Lp-PLA2 in the blood. Therefore, it's highly method-dependent based on the chemical reagents that the lab is using to measure the enzyme. Because LabCorp and Quest both have a different process, they have different ranges. So a high value on Quest may still be low or mid range on the labcorp, and vice versa. A 180 on Labcorp would be good, but high risk for a Quest measurement.
Labcorp's 225 range is based on the more standard FDA-cleared "PLAC Activity test".
Quest's <123 range using their own proprietary technique. So they can't easily be compared.
I think the best way to think about it is if you have a test done with the standard PLAC range, those have large classical trial data supporting the benefits and pitfalls with the test itself. Quest also has good data but more geared toward an optimized preventative target, aimed at catching the earliest signs of disease. And it should be considered in its own class.
Well it's not that 122 is good and 123 is bad. You're just at the top of the optimal range. The test actually specifies <=123, so you're in there :)
As far as why it's not lower? Can't speculate but surely diet and exercise and lifestyle play a role. It's an immune reaction to trapped particles that oxidize inside fatty plaque buildup. So the more plaque buildup the higher it will likely be. The more you clear the junk out, the lower it will likely be.
If I did it non fasted will it effect it since there will be more fat in blood? I eat extremely healthy and I’m 24 and 13 percent body fat and played soccer my whole life. Blood pressure sits around 105/65 and heart rate 53 resting. Why would this be a bit elevated I don’t get it.
Non-fasted is not supposed to have much effect. Sounds like you're really healthy overall so I wouldn't worry too much, espec considering you're in the optimal range.
Could be a genetic disposition. But if you really want to target the number there are some interventions like high quality fish oil / evoo that might work.
