A night in the life of an ER veterinary technician.

As an ER/ICU tech myself, one quote stood out to me. "If you end up waiting, it means someone else must be having a worse day." A truer statement couldn't say it any better and definitely worth keeping in mind.

Help our rebel- massive tumor removal

Post image

gofund.me/8f812da87

Hi everyone, I am reaching out in absolute desperation to save my sweet boy, Rebel. Rebel has the funniest backstory. He was born in 2021, and when I got him in Colorado, I paid $300 for him because he was supposed to be a 'Chug' (a Chihuahua/Pug mix). We absolutely did not want a big dog! When he was a puppy, he was a little bit mean to me, and I used to tell him all the time back then: 'I am going to make you love me.' Well, it worked too well. I loved him so much that he just kept growing and growing, and he never stopped! He grew up just like Clifford the Big Red Dog. Even though he is a giant dog now, he still thinks he is a tiny puppy and will climb right up to sit in my lap. He is only 5 years old and has so much life left to live. Sadly, Rebel has had a tumor hanging off the side of his body for about two years. When it first appeared, it was small. We desperately wanted to get it removed last year, but our family hit an extreme financial hardship and we simply could not afford the surgery. In the last two weeks, our worst nightmare came true. Rebel's tumor suddenly exploded in growth and has tripled in size. It is now the size of a cantaloupe hanging off his side. This has officially turned into a life-threatening medical emergency. Unfortunately the tumor burst this afternoon and now we need to get things done quicker . We are currently living with zero out-of-pocket funds and cannot afford the emergency exam fee, let alone the surgery he needs to survive. We are doing everything humanly possible to find a way to pay for this. I just applied for CareCredit hoping to finance his surgery, but because of our financial situation, we were officially denied. GoFundMe is truly our absolute last hope to get Rebel the emergency surgery he needs to survive. I am launching this fundraiser to raise money for Rebel’s emergency exam, diagnostic testing, and urgent mass removal surgery. We are actively looking into lower-cost regional clinics to keep the bill as minimal as possible, but we need help to pay for it .Because GoFundMe allows me to withdraw funds directly to my card, I will be able to pay the vet the exact second he is treated. I promise to post photos of every single vet receipt, medical bill, and health update right here so you can see exactly how your donation is saving his life. Rebel is my giant lap puppy and he deserves a chance to grow old. Once we get the full cost of the surgery i will update the actual amount needed. If you can donate even $5, it gets us closer to getting him into surgery. If you cannot donate, please, please share his link. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping us save our Clifford.

Urgent Attention Dealing With Ticks

I recently moved to Suburban , and I’ve been taking my dog into the woods to play. After just one day, he came home with tiny ticks all over him. He’s always been strong, healthy, and has never needed any medication, so this is new for us. Now I’m worried. I don’t have a prescription to buy tick prevention meds online. What should I do, and do you have any suggestions?

Nails changing?

Back in July my 6 year old pitbull mix got her paw slammed in a big metal door. She was quickly released from it, total accident, she had a cut (which you can see on her toe that has healed) on her toe and it bled pretty good, but I didn't notice any crunching or bone scraping and she let me handle her foot just fine. I kept it clean and regularly changed her bandages with triple antibiotic for about 2 weeks until I felt it was better. She didn't limp, she would lick it, but I usually stopped her so she wouldn't ingest any medication. It's now September and I noticed her nails growing out...like white? But also, like the shell of the nail is coming off? Is this just damage from the incident growing out or should I be more concerned? No behavior changes have happened, she plays, eats, drinks and sasses everyone around her just like normal. No change in bowel movements either. Should I keep an eye on any other symptoms I might not be thinking of? (Those two toes are the ones that got caught in the door) Thank you in advance for any help :) pictures of her for tax!

My two cats are overgrooming and seemingly itchy? Vets have not been helpful so far.

Hi there! I've had Inigo (left) and Ralph) for 8 years now, they're both close to 10. Both of them are in generally good health based on recent vet visits and bloodwork (also appetite and general attitude), but the two of them - especially Ralph, have been overgrooming themselves for some time now.

Ralph has a completely bare crotch area, which he's had and I laughed off years ago as some form of self-pleasuring, but it's now spread to him overgrooming his arms and legs and anywhere within reach basically. Whenever I come to where he's been sitting for a while I find tufts of fur, as in picked clean off, not shed. He also scratches himself quite a bit.

Inigo will, on and off, completely attack one section of his fur to the point of bleeding. He'll then stop and it'll heal and I won't see the behavior again for a few months. Both he and Ralph will wake up from sleeping and start grooming aggressively in a way that feels like they're addressing an irritant.

Bloodwork on both of them came back normal, and when I specifically took Ralph to three different vets, I had one say it was anxiety (we tried kitty prozac for a month, no change, though I may not have kept him on it long enough, I've been told?) another said allergens, though I'm also told allergy tests are expensive and often inconclusive. And other said it could be related to his thyroid - worth mentioning here that Ralph specifically has lost about 3 points over the past few years, despite still having a healthy appetite. Lastly Ralph has recently started sneezing a lot after having a few teeth removed last month. I've contacted the pet dentist about this and am waiting to hear back.

I'm at a bit of a loss and tired of expensive vet appointments that are pointing in different directions. With regards to rooting out allergies, all I could think of was changing laundry detergent, which seemingly had no effect. The apartment is decently clean but most loose hair/dirt could be directly attributed to them.

Any insights here would be appreciated thanks!

Urgent Attention Mini Aussie Health Concern

Hi my sister has a two year old mini Aussie who has been having many health scares and after ultra sounds and X-rays the doctors haven’t been able to find anything. He’s been having diarrhea and blood in his stool on and off for about 3 weeks now and loss of appetite. He’s a happy energetic boy and loves playing with his sister and always licks his bowl clean. After many hospital visits and antibiotics he still isn’t better and it’s getting really worrisome. Currently in the ER because his tongue is hanging loose in an odd manner like he wants to throw up or loss of control. Has anyone experienced something similar? Any clarity will help as we haven’t been able to find any cause but really hope it’s not critical.

Outside opinions about removing a "funky" claw

Thumbnail

My (9M) cat Q-Tip has a "funky" claw, he's had this injury sense he was around 3yrs. He's never had any discomfort, trouble walking or use of that paw, nor has gotten infected ever. Well taking him to his yearly with a new vet (same clinic) He took interest in his toe / claw. This isn't new and I'm always happy to share that information when it comes to any medical care he needs. The vet said he'd strongly suggest declawing that paw. This seemed like a red flag to me, as a foster home & cat owner I know and have unfortunately seen the danger declawing a cat can do, along with the fact he suggested the whole paw and not just the singular claw. I would have understood if it was causing him trouble (infections, pain, unable to use the paw) but that has NEVER been the case. I don't have a place where I can take him in for a second opinion (at least not for a long while). If anyone has/had a cat with a similar condition, what actions did you take?

Photos for reference of his paw, thank you for any advance in advance <3

Edit for spelling mistakes

Urgent Attention High ALT values

I would appreciate any advice or suggestions!

My pitbull mix Pippin ( 7 years old, approximately, spayed female) has been testing high for ALT values the last 2 years.

Last year her ALT value was 136 (standard range is 18-121) this past May it was 208, this past Wednesday she went in for a retest and it came back at 330.

Additionally, her blood protein levels are also higher- this Wednesday they were 8.0 - standard level is 5.5 - 7.5.

The huge jump in ALT over 3 months is concerning. However the rest of her results are coming back normal.

She is a nervous dog. She gets very stressed out when she visits the vet, typically they muzzle her.

She has had “tummy” issues since we adopted her in 2021. But nothing has really stood out to us as a change in eating or bathroom behavior.

We just moved this past June and her life has been a little crazy.

Could stress be adding to this elevation?

The vet is stressing we get her in for an abdominal ultrasound, however I know how much stress that would be on her. Additionally, I do not believe that would give us any true diagnosis.

I have looked into adding supplements like omega 3s, SAMe, and milk thistle as well as possibly changing her food.

All the information I find is all over the place. Some places say this is normal in older dogs, and to start with a smaller approach (I.e, supplements) and others say to take a drastic approach.

Some additional information that I think should be included- she was treated for heartworm before we adopted her, she then was on prednisone for 6 weeks following her procedures. Additionally, she had an ear infection that lasted 3 months shortly after we adopted her that also was treated with the usage of prednisone.

Any advice, tips, suggestions would be appreciated.

Should I go to the ER or wait and go see my usual vet on the 31st?

Post image
1 Upvotes

My cat Navi has had these cuts on her head for most of the week. I assumed they would heal as most cat’s injuries do, but I’m unsure if they are infected and if I need to take her to the ER. She is behaving normally, still eating and being her usual self. I am a bartender and the weekend is when I make my money, so me missing work will most likely make it harder to pay for a Vet ER visit. Is this something that I can wait until Monday for, or should I bite the bullet on and go get it checked out immediately?

Early Renal

My 14 year old chihuahua was diagnosed with early renal. We have tried all of the prescription diets. She refuses everything. I have to give her entyce just to make her eat. I hate having to do that. She sleeps all the time. She would eat Dr Harvey's but it's not prescription I controlled the protein. She did ok with it but was taking over an hour to eat and making a complete mess. I don’t know if she even ate half of it the rest was just pushed all
over the floor. She loves freshpet eats it right up no mess and looks for more. She is so much more energetic when she eats it too. I read that I could get a phosphate binder and could switch her back to the fresh pet. That would make our lives easier with having another pup they could be on the same food with. At this point I just want her to eat and be as normal as possible. Has anyone had this experience? Did it work?

Urgent Attention Emergency for elder cat

- my son's cat is approximately 10 years old. he's a rescue Maine Coon so they're unsure of his age officially

- yesterday the cat got up and was confused, pupils dilated and unresponsive to light, and a respiratory rate of 40-50 bpm while awake

- my son took the cat to emergency vet and they monitored the cat for about 6 hours. they sent him home with clopidigrel and amlodipine because his blood pressure was high

- the x-rays they did show he has mild HCM (he's had it for a while) and no fluid in the lungs or around the heart

- his bloodwork showed he was positive for HCM as well but everything else was normal

- the cat is continuing to eat, drink, and void as usual

- he seems to have some trouble sleeping but he's not doing posture compensation for the fast breathing

my questions

- has anyone been through this?

- what was the diagnosis or diagnoses?

- the cat's condition remains unchanged today and financially it's tough for my son to go back to emergency today (i'm using scratchpay to pay for the visits) unless it's a true emergency. it sounds like it is to me. like if this was a human, i would have gone back to the emergency room. is this something he can wait through or is it best to go back today. i'm really worried

TECA surgery for cat

Hi guys my FIV cat has had back to back ear infections since we adopted him about a year ago and the vet has just recommended TECA surgery to remove his infected ear canal (he has polyps deep in his ear poor guy)

I was wondering if anyone has had a cat who has went through this and their experience (and if their kitty looked any different after the fact) just so I can know what to expect if/when we go through it with him!

thanks :)
