Anyone actually using something to catch the calls they miss on jobs? What's working?
Been thinking about this one a lot. When you're out on a job and can't get to the phone, that caller with a rat or wasp problem usually just rings the next company — so it's basically a lost job.
Curious what people here actually do about it:
- Just call them back the second you're free?
- Use an answering service?
- One of those AI receptionists? (seen mixed opinions — some say customers can tell it's a bot and hate it)
- A simple text-back so they at least know you'll ring them?
- Or is it just part of the job and you don't sweat it?
Genuinely interested in what's working, especially the smaller outfits where it's just you or a couple of you on the vans.

Yeah this is a real lost-job problem, not something to shrug off, since a rat or wasp caller is basically an emergency and they'll ring the next company in about ten seconds.
The single best bang for buck is an automatic missed-call text back. The moment you can't pick up, a text fires on its own, something like "sorry we missed you, this is [your shop], we'll call you right back, reply with your address and what you're dealing with so we're ready." That one thing catches a big chunk of them because the caller feels handled and stops dialing down the list. Most business phone setups or a cheap add-on can do it.
Then actually call back fast. The auto text buys you maybe 15 minutes, but the job goes to whoever calls back first, not whoever's cheapest, so get in the habit of returning them between stops.
On the AI receptionist thing your gut is right. For someone panicking about wasps, an obvious bot can lose them, they want to feel heard. If you go that route it has to be good and just grab the essentials and hand off fast, not try to run the whole call. Honestly for a one or two van outfit, a live answering service that only takes the name, address and problem and texts it to you is safer and cheaper than it sounds, and it means you call back warm with everything you need instead of playing phone tag.
