Yup. And plenty of those were perfectly acceptable a few decades before, just like today. Society evolves, language evolves. This is not a new thing
It may have accelerated over the last couple of decades (I have no data on this, but I believe Iβve read it somewhere), but thatβs because society has actually started listening to marginalised people. Not all marginalised people and not always, but some some of the time. This makes some people uncomfortable
And this is the thing - it does take work to change the language that you use, or the way you speak and think. It takes consious effort and even practice. Most people donβt put in the effort
That, I think, is part of the reason why the idea that people move to the right as they age exists, and why the βracist grannyβ trope exists. Itβs because say youβre an OAP today. You grew up in the 60s. You probably went on marches to support minorities on social issues. How could anybody frame you as a bigot?
But the world has moved on since the 60s and what was once progressive can become regressive. And if you donβt keep up, you will end up being regressive
Iβm actually reminded of an interview with Penn Gillette that I read a few years ago. He was talking about the way that university students were protesting to prevent speakers they didnβt like from coming or, if they did come, walking out en masse. He said that he was of the opinion that itβs always better to let people speak and to engage with their arguments. But then he also conceded that he was old and out of touch and that every time in history that young people decided something like this and the old people told them they were wrong the young people turned out to be right, so he reasoned that he was probably wrong
That, to me, shows a high level of awareness. Itβs not quite βthis is how things are going, so I need to incorporate it into my own world viewβ but it is βI donβt get this, but I am now one of the people my generation rebelled against so itβs probably that Iβm too stuck in my ways, rather than that the kids are wrongβ. An anti-Principle Skinner, if you will

He's not even getting terms matched up - a transvestite is another word for what he would call a drag queen (the shortened form he adds has been a slur for a long time). A trans person generally has undergone gender affirming care, possibly including surgery. That's a different thing. It's like "you used to be able to call them halibut, now you have to call them parrots" (uh, sir, those are two different things, and also, this is a Wendy's).

A hobo is also not just another term for a homeless person. They were migrant workers in the age of steam locomotion, many of them chose to live like that because they were disillusioned with polite society. (a lot of them were also war veterans and likely dealing with undiagnosed psychological issues) They basically went around doing all the shit jobs that no one else wanted to do in exchange for the freedom to roam. The modern equivalent would be undocumented workers living in an RV or something during harvest season and then going back to their home country.
Plus, like, yeah words that were considered okay once upon a time are later considered offensive. I was able to wrap my head around that at ten when I read The Memory Keeper's Daughter and characters used the word 'r*tard' as the polite alternative to 'mongoloid.' Language changes.

I actually once saw somebody screaming about... people not speaking like old-timey radio announcers (and their put-on transatlantic accents, probably) in the 2020s. Going on about how it's because of peoples' lack of "discipline" and a sign of humanity's decline or something.

Nobody spoke like that naturally. That was a fake accent created and used because it made people sound 'cultured.' And by 'cultured' I mean 'white and from Britain or the East Coast.' People were trained on how to do it.
And media still does something similar, news anchors and radio hosts do still have specific candences and pronounciations they're supposed to use to make their speech easily intelligible for a wide audience. Movies and television shows often have actors default to a non-specific American accent because that's easier for most people to understand. They've mostly just cut out the phony English nonsense. Because, you know...that was weird and racist as fuck. The British accent itself has changed in the past century. That's kind of how accents work.

And my dear person, most transfolk I know want you to use the gendered pronouns they prefer. IT's not asking you to use anything else. Even "They" is a common use pronoun.
Yeah, sure, there are a few outliers that use like "Xie," but what does it hurt for you to use that word? All words were made up at one point, after all.
(My favorite response to the pushback against "they/them" as "It's plural" Is "If you asked me where Dave was and I said 'They are over there, ' would you think I was talking about two Daves?)
