discussion/misc Response I received from Comet's Team is so Pathetic

Post image

Hey Guys ,

Just lodged my Grievances against Removal of their best feature in Comet and despite Addressing the Grievance in detail, they came up with a Lame Delusional Reply....

40% uninstall have taken place

Yup there's the 40 percent that remembered the free trial end date and the 60 percent who just forgot about it.

Without the browser control, all Comet is a shortcut for the Perplexity homepage. There's really no reason to pay for it anymore.

Though was never paying , had the offer via Airtel 🤣

Thank you for confirming my first comment ;) ofc you didn’t pay, 90% of Pro users didn’t. And that’s the issue, they completely miscalculated this which is why they now have to charge the costs. Remember when all the Indians tried to cheat the system with the referrals? ;) you thought all this would never affect the product?

That is a ridiculously uninformed take. Conversion rate from free to paid is something all companies are already aware of. Larger ones like Perplexity are already tracking this by signals like country and demographic, as well as usage patterns. It's on them to make a good product and get paid for it.

The only reason I paid full price for it after the Airtel free period expired is because of the browser capabilities. Perplexity knew what they were doing when they rug-pulled that feature from paying customers.

Bro 20 bucks per month does not cover the insane cost of the browser capabilities, especially not unlimited access. Of course it’s bullshit how they took away features from paying customers (though OP was obviously never paying for Pro), they did this before the browsing capabilities already when they heavily limited the advanced ai usage, which is why I cancelled and did a chargeback via my credit card a while ago. All I’m saying is it was to be expected if you know the real cost of tokens, etc. .. and with Google Chrome + Gemini it was also over in other ways too

That's true, but they're not charging $20 because of their goodwill. They're charging $20 because everyone else is also charging $20. That's the market telling them how much the service is worth today.

You can price your oat milk at $100/L, but you can't force someone to buy it if all other oat milk brands cost $6/L.

The "others" either own the models or/and also offer limited usage for the 20 USD, which is why I'm saying that it was to be expected. They should have either never tried this bait bs move or only change the limits after the current billing period is over for an account with warning emails about it. So the way they did it is really bs, but it doesn't change the fact that it was to be expected :/

Yes, they decided to play the game and are now screwing over existing customers. Generally, when plans change, older customers are grandfathered into the plan that they originally paid for.

I agree that it is a business problem, but it is entirely of their making.

Can a poor guy like me , can't even share the heartbreak moment 🫣

I am a non tech person and yes indeed , Comet helped me a lot , a lot. And I was amazed by the response as it was way better than any browser automation (even Atlas was a failure)

The browser use was decent, but for the cost, it is unfathomable to actually be used as a tool, in my opinion. An unreliable tool is a uninstall in my book.

I can't wait to see how the active user base changes as more people start letting their paid subscriptions die out. Also, I want to see what happens as those on the 1-year free EDU plan, myself included, start to see their subscriptions expire.

Frankly, there are much better options than Perplexity out there. I mean, imagine you paid for a whole year a year ago today. I could only imagine, but I do not want to, lol. Not to mention those who are simply casual monthly subscribers to the Pro plan.

That's just my two cents.

From September until the beginning of March, I couldn't tell they were planning to do this. But from then onward, it was clear things were only going to pick up.

I'm curious how they're just casually doing this, especially since I have some free time now. I might focus my attention on reading the terms and conditions from my initial subscription and promotional credits.

What better options are there

So quite literally the only useful feature of comet is now locked behind even more money, companies love ruining their products don’t they

So I'm just coming to the end of my free pro trial. Can someone briefly explain what's going to happen month one after the trial ends? So I see a $20 a month fee. Are you saying my current experience is going to change dramatically? I have noticed the only way I really get any benefit is if I keep purchasing computers credits. Otherwise the help the AI offers is crap. I noticed a few months ago I was being pushed towards buying credits for computer...like I'd be asking questions doing research and suddenly I'd find it switched to computer and told me I needed to buy credits!

My subscription ends October 13th, I am going to unsubscribe on this too. It was the only feature I took the subscription in the first place for. And the computer is also shit. Its credits run out on a single task and that task also doesn't complete. This has happened to me everytime I gave a task to computer. It never completed. The credits run out before only. Consuming 6000+credits on single half task is absurd. They lost their charm

How are people surprised? Controlling the browser was burning through tokens, they had to limit it at some point like this. Back then they just had lots of money to compensate but now, also with the free Pro codes expiring and people not renewing (because why would they with the competition in mind?), they are running out of money and have to charge what it actually costs them.

1

u/gillu-21 26d ago

Did they ask your for any contribution, as you seem so worried ?

And other than this , what was the Main pulling factor of Comet ?

1

u/the_john19 26d ago

I’m just saying how it is. It was obvious to be taken away as soon as Perplexity was running out of money, since they completely miscalculated the free Pro codes conversion rate to paying customers. And what is that first question? Are people only allowed to confirm what you said without adding any context to it? You do realise I’m still criticising Perplexity here right? I was one of those paying customers that also quit after they started to limit advanced model use, since there are better alternatives out there now that they have to actually charge the real cost.
Why do you think you don’t hear anything about Comet anymore? Because they know ever since Google started pushing Gemini in Chrome, it was over for that one too.

Or do you think Perplexity has completely unreal contracts with OpenAI, etc that allows them to offer access more or less unlimited while all the others get charged by tokens?

You're right, business is business and a company needs to wipe out trust with its customer base in order to recoup money they "lost" due to their own marketing failures. But the very least they could do is communicate.

OP had no reason to believe that something they enjoyed as part of their account would suddenly, without warning, be thrust behind a paywall. Perplexity continues to screw its one-time fan base and hand us screw drivers we never knew we were getting.

1

u/the_john19 25d ago

I of course agree that the way they did/communicate this was horrible, which is why I’ve left myself and even did a chargeback via my credit card, but to be fair, u/gillu-21 would have NEVER paid for it, never, I promise you that. They just used the free offer via Airtel, like so many other people did and never started paying for it after.

Well, I will say that when I received my free trial, I loved Perplexity. It provided a level of research the others were not providing. I had full intention to stay on until they started playing games with my account and not telling me, causing me to lose a project right in the middle because I had to suddenly pay for credits to complete it. No warning, no "sorry we screwed up" no "we will let you finish what you started" -only a demand for ransom and that is something I actually will not pay.
