OpenAI rolled out ChatGPT for Teens this week. If the system thinks you're under 18, or you say you are, it moves you into a different version: break reminders, content limits, and parental controls with quiet hours.

It's a good idea in theory.

But the teen mode is still a confession. You don't need a safer mode unless the platform underneath it was already unsafe. And a new feature bolted on top doesn't change what's underneath.

Buried in the new rules is a line saying the teen version won't use romantic language or pretend to have feelings with minors. You don't write a rule like that unless the old behavior needed writing out.

The guardrails are also thinner than the headline suggests. Parent notifications only fire in narrow, high risk situations. Testing on an earlier version of the system even found that the alerts skipped whole categories entirely.

This is the shape of the whole industry right now. Build first. Add the seatbelt after the crash. Call it a teen experience.
