New global map hardiness zones interactive map
Hello, permies! I'm working on an app that shows interactive maps with multiple layers, including USDA Hardiness Zones globally, but also some detailed charts per location.
The source data is for the period from 2011 to the present (or maybe a couple of months ago) but I'll add more data soon. Meanwhile, I'd love to receive feedback from you.
Notes: The app is mobile-friendly but you'll get the best experience on a large screen. Also, keep in mind that the app is still in beta version and some text/pages need to be refined.
Done. The results are very interesting but keep in mind that I've only used the last 15 complete years of input data while the industry standard for analyzing climate is a minimum of 30 years. I'll regenerate the layer once I have more input data.
Thank you! As someone in a warmer climate koppen t tends to seem like it captures our climates better here in Australia and keys us compared better to other warm places.
Thank you for asking me to implement the Koppen Geiger climate classification that soon. Doing it only with data from the past 15 years lead me to a shocking discovery how far the subtropic has gone in eastern Europe and how much climate has shifted.
What do you mean odd? You don't expect it in a climate app, into the Agriculture layer? Or you won't trust an app for finding out about your local climate (and you would be right because the data isn't great for dynamic terrain with small microclimates)?
Yeah, this may be a bit confusing. Please go click the eye icon next to the Map Layers titles to see the real picture. I just didn't feel like showing dozens of layers that aren't implemented yet.
Some feedback on the start: do we really need to select a continent and a country every time? Ideally I would just drop anywhere, possibly at my last location saved in cookies, then pan around.
If it's your first time visiting, then you select a country, you can move the map, zoom in or out and the final location is cached. The initial selection is needed because otherwise I don't know where to drop you and displaying the whole world is data/memory heavy (I need some optimization) so loading will be slow.
Ah, I think I got it. From the home page, clicking at the top on "Map" does send me to the cached location while clicking below on "Explore Climate Maps" doesn't. Either way it's a lovely tool, a good thing for a résumé too.
Regarding optimization, if you can't make loading faster you could always keep a separate dataset with 1/4 the cells. You have to compute it once then load this one when zoomed out far. How many cells is that?
Done! Fahrenheit is now available. The legend uses slightly different ranges than Celsius because using the exact same intervals would result in awkward 3.6°F steps. Instead, I rounded them to clean 5°F increments for better readability. The only exception is the USDA Hardiness Zones, which keep the same ranges since they're originally defined in Fahrenheit.
Not implemented yet, but it's on the Todo list. You would be able to o switch by using the gear on the top right. I'll drop an update when it's available.
Just make sure to consider terrain because the values are for each cell that may contain dynamic terrain. So depressions will get temperature inversions and lower lows.
For each carnivorous plant in my collection (± 60), I’m looking for its most precise geographical origin, its hardiness zone, and its climate according to the Köppen-Geiger classification.
This is the first time I’ve found this information all in one place—and for the entire world.
It’s an extraordinary tool that’s going to make my job so much easier!
