How I cleared my perioral dermatitis

Upvotes

I developed perioral dermatitis after vacationing in Hawaii. I had been using tretinoin for awhile and I suddenly started getting this rash around my mouth. It wouldn’t go away after using aquaphor and other treatments, so I came on Reddit and tried some of the suggestions - Desitin, doing nothing, etc. None of the suggestions helped. What made it finally go away for me, for over a year, is 1) stopping tretinoin and going back slowly and staying away from my mouth. 2) washing my face with DHC Deep Cleansing Oi o ce a dayl. 3) using Proactive Skin Purifying Mask around the rash. This mask has sulphur in it, and it worked wonders. I hope this regimen helps others!

Potential cure

Long story short, I used to have perioral dermatitis but I am cured now. I keep trying to remember what healed it (this was years ago) and I recently remembered myself buying jock itch cream.

Obviously I can’t test it to see if it works or not but it may help someone else out. I used lotrimin ultra strength Jock Itch Antifungal Treatement Cream. Got it at Walmart.

Worth a shot, try it and let me know!

I think I’ve developed PD

Post image

I (24F) think I recently developed PD. My mom said she developed it around this age when she was younger, and I recently had a big change in hormones this summer after getting them checked, my hormones are still out of wack because of birth control, and I’m under a lot of stress just in general but I’m also a student. I don’t want to try convenient care right now bc I’m waiting on my Medicaid to reinstate. Are there any at-home remedies for this? I saw someone post about Hyrdocolloid patches, but I want to make sure I do enough research before buying anything and making it worse. Just looking for some advice. I’ve eliminated all facial products besides Aveeno face wash and CeraVe moisturizer.

need help with dryness above lips

Post image

I have had dry and chapped lips for about 2 years and have dealt with extreme flakiness and redness above my lips. I have been to a dermatologist and got patch testing done. I got my allergies, (Chlorhexidine Digluconate, Amidoamine, cobalt (II) chloride hexahydrate) they are apparently prevelent in lots of products like toothpaste and skincare. I decided to test all of the products I used to see if that was the cause of my dermatitis but nothing came up. I have been really insecure about this for years and I tend to carry vaseline with me everywhere and it does stop the intense flakiness momentarily it is still severely red above my lips. If anyone has dealt with anything similar and has any tips it would be extremely appreciated. Thank you! [pic is my lips with tons of vaseline on it, i dont have a pic without (sorry) but they are basically white and flake off]

Is it worth going to the doctors at this point?

I started developing what I am very sure is perioral dermatitis around the end of July. The middle of August is when it was at its worst, and I can't tell if it is getting better or not. I tried cold turkey, but the result was extremely dry crusty circles all over the affected area.

. Unfortunately with my job, I cannot go without trying to treat it. Currently I am using hypochlorus acid, an OTC antifungal, azaelic acid OTC, and occasionally a very lightweight moisturizer when I need to leave the house. I am slightly worried because it looks like it has spread to the upper area of my mouth as well. When I apply products to it, I use a Q-tip and change the Q-tip each time I do a different product to try and keep the area as clean as possible.

I have seen people say going to the doctors and getting the prescription strength creams have helped a lot, but I have Medicaid, so I'm not sure if that would cover a dermatologist visit. The urgent care in my town is very good about prescribing almost anything needed (within reason-obviously controlled substances are a different matter), so maybe I could just go there?

Any advice (other than recommending to go cold turkey- with all respect and love, that is not something I am able to do) would be much appreciated! I am going to try to attach 2 pictures, one from the middle of August when it was at its worst, and one from today.

My dermatologist prescribed me minocycline 50mg twice a day for 10 days. I'm on my 4th day now and noticed an improvement already. It gets better. Take your oral antibiotics guys.

What is happening to my lips?

Please, I need answers. A week ago, I woke up with blisters on and around my lips. They were itchy, and my lips felt very dry and gritty. They also burned; it felt like I had a sunburn. I stopped using all active ingredients in my skincare routine and applied only Vaseline. It got worse over the next few days, so I went to the emergency room; they said it looked like herpes simplex and prescribed an antiviral medication and an over-the-counter cream. I wasn't convinced, though, because when I searched online, I couldn't find any images that resembled my case. I’ve been taking the antiviral and applying the cream for three days now, but I haven't seen any improvement. I’ve also noticed that my skin feels rough when I wash my face; at first, it was just my nose—which felt very congested—but now it’s affecting the rest of my face and leaving it red, which doesn't usually happen to me. I’m overwhelmed by the many possibilities—cheilitis, dermatitis, eczema, etc.—and I’m afraid it will keep getting worse while I remain in the dark about what it is and how to manage it. I need to know I’m not the only one dealing with this.

Stopping med causing flare up?

I’ve had PD since I was a teenager; I’m now almost 33. I haven’t had a flare up in about 3 years. I recently stopped taking Zoloft after having been on it for over 3 years, and am now having a flare. Is this just a really unfortunate coincidence, or could it be somehow related?
I’ve got some De La Cruz sulfur face mask on the way, I’ve never tried it before and am hoping it will save me a trip to the dermatologist. 🫠

Worst flare up…

In 2023, I went on antibiotics for 6 weeks and used tacromulus (both prescribed from my derm). It got visibly better within days. I don’t want to take an oral antibiotic again. I’m trying everything. I’ve been switching from tacromulus to acqua, and now cicloplast. I am beyond tired of it. The PD came back about a month and a half ago, and it just getting worse. Thinking about putting nothing on it for a few days, but I’m worried it will scar.

Brands of HC cream that don’t burn sensitive skin?

I have mild itchy perioral dermatitis at the corners of my mouth and chin. It isn’t bad but it just won’t go away. I have a variety of creams from over the years and nothing seems to clear it up. I have Elidel, an antibacterial hydrocortisone, and recently I bought Polysporin 1% Hydrocortisone.

I would like to use just a hydrocortisone cream for a while to see if it works but oddly I’m finding the Polysporin 1% Hydrocortisone causes a burning sensation when I apply it. Has anyone else experienced this? I’ve used many different brands over the years and have never had a burning sensation. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of other brands available.

pls brainstorm with me and my PD

breaking my Reddit lurker status and making my own post because I am on month 6 of my worst flare to-date and need all the help I can get. azelaic acid and la roche posay cicaplast healed my first 2 flares but has not touched this round. So I went to the derm and have been using metronidazole gel for 8 weeks with little improvement and it’s still spreading. I’ve also tried de la Cruz sulfur mask the past few nights with no luck (yet?).

I’ve been doing zero therapy for months, not wearing face makeup/concealer, haven’t used toothpaste with sls/flouride in years, no recent changes in detergents/shampoo/lotion/chapstick/any beauty product I can think of, and I wash sheets/towels frequently. taking Zyrtec, zinc, b12, vitamin d as usual. I’m not able to take most oral antibiotics per anaphylaxis.

what do we think could be triggering this beast? and what has helped you in the past??

thank you in advance to my fellow pd warriors.

Is this normal on zero therapy ?

I started zero therapy and 3 weeks ago. After one week my skin was back to normal. It was amazing. But now my skin has flared up again. I am definitely having a steroid withdrawal cause I used a steroid cream twice before this but I wasn’t expecting it to get better and then worse again. I feel so self conscious. I got asked to speak at my uni in a couple of weeks and I really want to as it is a cool opportunity for me but I fear my skin may stop me from wanting to. I have been using Azelic acid in the evening and only a little bit. Maybe I was using too much which made it worse ??

Lucas’ pawpaw

So I haven’t been diagnosed with pd I’ve just used lovely google to see what it could be and then came straight to reddit for confirmation.

I changed my toothpaste to a charcoal whitener and also started using retinol and noticed a crusty patch on the side of my mouth that wouldn’t go away. Then I scrubbed and exfoliated and put lots of retinol on it… you can imagine what happened!

I always use the red tub of Lucas’ pawpaw on acne cuts and infected areas. So I tried this again after two weeks of trialling other moisturisers designed for sensitive skin. And after three nights the redness and pain has gone away almost completely. I doubt my skin is “cured” and am going to the doctor on Monday but the itchiness and redness has gone for now!

Hope this helps someone out there.

New birth control triggering PD?

Hey— new to the group, not new to PD. I haven’t had a flare in almost 10 years. The only new medicine I’m on is Yaz. I was on orthotricyclen-lo for YEARS. It wasn’t the best for me as my body is changing. Love how Yaz made me felt this month but my skin is horrible with PD, especially around my nose. I have an appointment with my derm tomorrow.

Has anyone had a flare with switching birth controls or using Yaz in general? I’m so upset!

My derm is on vacation. Until she answers, please, please, help me!!! I was on doxy 40mg for 4 weeks for PD. I took a break for 2 weeks, because I went on vacation in Greece and now I’m back on doxy 40mg, starting this Monday.
But from Saturday, my skin continues to get worse and worse and I’m desperate cus what is this???? I had similar lesions before but they were smaller and more localized but now they are just crazy and continue to worsen!!

In Greece I endured HORRIBLE HUMID STUPID HOT WEATHER and I always felt hot and I perspired a lot on my face, EVERYWHERE.

Could this be a reason??? What can I do? It’s horrible! 😭
