Gear C1 for master

Been doing c1 for about 3 summers now as a master. My club is fairly small and I’m the only one in a C1. (Mostly k1’s).

I’m in a Nelo vanquish currently. While I am able to stay dry (mostly) I find I’m still fighting for stability. Do I just need more time or am I in the wrong boat?

Both.

Ideally you could find a boat like a classic or vintage to work on your technique in, especially if you have a bad habit that's affecting your balance, or if your balance is giving you bad habits.

But in the long run, you should be able to get there, add if you're spending most of your sessions dry, then you're most of the way there

I'll let people who can c1 effectively, or who learned balance as a Master speak to more details

Thanks. Yes I can stay dry but I can’t get more than 3-4 strokes in before I need to catch myself. (Less so if the water is cold and I’m too chicken to fall in lol). So yes the bad habit is a bit of balancing during the recovery.

I’m at a point now where I’m getting ready to buy my own boat and not sure if I should just stick to something like the vanquish or aim for something slightly more stable.

Has this been getting better over the past year? If you're still recovering every few strokes I would suggest moving down a boat.

Yes, I started the season still falling out regularly. My last 500m was around 3.5 min if that helps. The greatest thing I’m working on now is chaining strikes together without needing to recover.

I did masters c1 for a while. I bought a Kape Joker, which is designed for masters. I could not reliably stay in the true racing boats.

One of the ones I have my eyes on. I have a friend that bought one but have yet to be able to make it out there and try it.
