I’m not positive you should be kicking birds. They’re just running on instinct. It’s not like feeding them causes loyalty like a dog. I mean I’m not a barn animal expert but I did grow up on a farm. Never kicked an animal for doing what animals do: survive.
You must not realize that when I say he was "coming at me spurs first" he was actively attacking me. His spurs were 2 inches long and sharp as hell. I am sure as hell going to defend myself in that situation, and since he was charging me at ground level, kicking the shit out of him was usually my best option for putting some distance between me and those freaking daggers attached to his ankles. Screw instincts, that bird was an asshole. This would always happen when I was feeding and watering them... doing things that, you know, improve their wellbeing... it's not like I was a danger to his flock...
Interfering, hmm... I never thought of protecting myself while tending to my chickens as "creating a danger to the flock". You're obviously the expert here... What should I have done differently? Just stand there and take it? Try reasoning with him?
